Short Biography

Kinga Kimic (PhD) is a Landscape Architect, Designer, Assistant Professor at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Institute of Environmental Engineering, Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW, Poland. Her master dissertation (1998) and doctoral dissertation (2003) concerned values of public parks. Her present research is related to programming and design of urban public spaces with a special interest to public greenery, and focuses on functional, environmental and social aspects in the context of sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life and well-being of city dwellers. Her research interest is also related to historical green areas and their values as cultural and natural heritage as well as issues of conservation and revalorization. Kinga Kimic is an author and co-author of numerous scientific publications related to the above-mentioned topics. She is a Vice-President of Section of Landscape Architects in Association of Polish Architects - Warsaw Branch (SARP-OW), Poland. She is also a member of several COST Actions, including CA18110 “Underground Built Heritage as catalyser for Community Valorisation”.

Salt mines, a significant category of local, regional, national, and/or European underground heritage, are becoming attractive tourism destinations. This paper examines three cases of salt mining in different European countries, namely Wieliczka in Poland, Campina de Cima in Portugal, and Turda in Romania. They are analyzed in the context of history, typical attributes of their attractiveness, and new uses after the salt extraction was or is going to be stopped, in order to detect their unique values as important assets for both Underground Built Heritage (UBH) and Salt Heritage Tourism (SHT). The results of their comparison show that despite a positive impact related to their protection as cultural and industrial heritage, there are also some negative aspects related to increasing costs of their maintenance and adaptation of salt mines to new functions and to meet the tourism needs. By putting in place measures to enhance the awareness of their values and for activating the local community, the three mines are showcases for the economic outputs for their sites and regions, as well as for increasing knowledge regarding UBH.

In the era of digitization, parametric design creates new possibilities for its application in areas such as architecture and design as well as landscape architecture. However, it requires tools that can not only facilitate the design process, but also reduce its time consumption. The purpose of the article is to review the software used for parametric design supporting the work of landscape architects. The selected, most popular programs and plugins used by architects and designers, which are also indirectly used by landscape architects as well as software dedicated directly to landscape architects, were evaluated. Most of the discussed software has options for parametric design, while they only apply to selected elements. Due to the interdisciplinary character of landscape architecture, there is currently no single multifunctional program giving the possibility of comprehensive application of parametric design options to all aspects of a complex project. For this reason, landscape architects are forced to combine functions themselves using several of programs. This is a significant difficulty in carrying out the design process.

The honeycomb pattern, comes from nature, is one of the inspiration used by architects in their work. The characteristic form of the hexagon, possible to be duplicated as a module in both "pure" and modified form, favours the implementation of more and more spectacular solutions in architecture. The aim of the article is an overview of selected examples of the honeycomb pattern applied in architecture in relation to shaping its basic form (single objects and their complex systems), as well as used in architectonic details at various scales (elements of building facades). The variety of ideas is resulted from the inventiveness of planners and architects, the development of innovative design tools, and the availability of various materials used in construction.

In recent years, mobile devices have become very popular communication tools that provide access to information and communication, influence people’s social behaviour and change patterns of their everyday activities. The use of communication technologies in public open spaces has become significant for the outdoor experiences of people and the relationship between users and technologically mediated outdoor activities. More specifically, wireless digital cultures not only influence spatial layout, infrastructure systems and moving patterns, but also require ICT-based placemaking strategies. This is often not considered sufficiently during the physical design stage. It is important to consider a space appropriation approach to the use of digital technologies in public spaces, based on user requirements and the local context. This is demonstrated with a case study of the Gardens at new waterfront of Thessaloniki, Greece. In this project space analysis and users’ questionnaires were applied to relate digital space to the reality of the physical landscape as a first stage in the design process. This approach has wider implications for successful place making strategies. This chapter considers the possibilities of extensive outdoor use of digital media technologies in traditional forms of spatial experiences. It proposes that the new digital layer overlaying the physical space should first be methodologically explored in a way that could advance understanding of the extent to which immaterial networks and relationships can affect material planning and design dimensions.

Modern society is fascinated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), physical laziness, isolation from nature, and a preference for staying indoors. Despite the general acceptance and understanding of the health benefits of recreation in the open air, a change is being seen in the recreational patterns of urban dwellers, as they spend less time outdoors. In order to counteract such behaviours, we can try to apply ICTs to enhance time spent outdoors. The performed study aimed to find uses of ICT solutions in designing public spaces in order to enhance and promote a healthy lifestyle. The selected examples show possible applications of ICT in promoting active recreation, e.g. mobile applications for sport activities, urban games in line with the idea of the Playable City, and urban furniture and outdoor hotspots enabling access to the Internet. The research findings proved that digitisation is not only a threat to a healthy lifestyle, but that it can also create opportunities to improve the quality of life.

Fruit trees are essential components of different types of greenery, including not only private gardens but also historical and modern public parks and gardens of many other cities. The research was carried out in spring 2016 by visiting different parks. Fruit trees were identified in 22 public parks of Warsaw situated in different districts of the city and picked up randomly for preliminary study. Observations were made by photographic documentation and mapping of the fruit trees on park plans using GPS coordinates which were taken during the site visit and Google Earth maps. According to the observations, selected fruit trees compositions have been recognized in public parks of Warsaw. The compositional structures that have been observed consist of solitaire fruit trees, groups of trees (containing fruit trees, but mostly composed of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs) and linear structures of fruit trees (rows and alleys). The results of the preliminary study show that the most frequent fruit tree compositions used in the structure of selected public parks of Warsaw represent groups of trees - groups that consist of fruit trees and different species of ornamental shrubs. The undertaken study confirmed that fruit trees planted in the public parks of Warsaw have a high compositional value. They play an important role in the spatial arrangement of the parks selected, but also define the scope and borders of the selected garden interiors and create attractive sites.
