Monica Papini is a Full Professor of Engineering Geology at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, a position she has held since 2018. She previously served as an Associate Professor from 2002 to 2018 and as a Researcher in Engineering Geology from 1992 to 2002. She obtained her PhD in Engineering in 1992 from Politecnico di Milano and graduated in Geological Sciences from the University of Milano in 1987. Since 1992, she has been teaching Applied Geology at Politecnico di Milano, where she is part of the IC&T research unit for Civil and Environmental Engineering, covering a wide range of disciplines including civil engineering, geotechnics, and engineering geology. Since July 2024, she has been President of the Italian Association of Applied and Environmental Geology (AIGA). Her research activity has resulted in more than 100 scientific publications and focuses on engineering geology, with particular emphasis on underground construction, slope stability, and hydrogeological risk assessment. Her work also addresses soil erosion, landslide mapping, and the monitoring and modelling of mass movements. More recently, her research has focused on soil erosion and sediment transport in mountain environments, with particular attention to hydrogeological risk. This includes the characterization of sediment source areas, the quantification of sediment yield in catchments, and the prediction of erosion processes across different temporal scales.
