José Fernández graduated in Mathematics, with a specialty in Astronomy and Geodesy, and completed PhD study in 1992 from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He is currently Research Full Professor at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research, Institute of Geociences. He has participated in more than 90 research projects (national, European, ESA, NASA, and for other space agencies and international organisations), being Coordinator, Principal Investigator, or Co-investigator, in 65 of them. He has directed or co-directed eight PhD theses, one being a special award doctoral degree in Mathematics and the other with the Foundation José García Siñeriz, winning the award for the best PhD Thesis in Geophysics. He has organised eight international conferences and has conducted more than 300 presentations at conferences, mostly international ones, with about 10 invited lectures in the past ten years. The results of his research have been described in over 260 publications, 134 of them in SCI journals. He has been editor of eight books and for different SCI journals. His research mainly focuses on the framework of Geodesy and its application to natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, instabilities field) and anthropogenic ones, both in terms of observation (using ground-based and space techniques) and modelling for the interpretation of observations.
