The COVID-19 pandemic triggered catastrophic impacts on human life, but at the same time demonstrated positive impacts on air quality. In this study, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown interventions on five major air pollutants during the pre-lockdown, lockdown, and post-lockdown periods is analysed in three urban areas in Northern England: Leeds, Sheffield, and Manchester. A Generalised Additive Model (GAM) was implemented to eliminate the effects of meteorological factors from air quality to understand the variations in air pollutant levels exclusively caused by reductions in emissions. Comparison of lockdown with pre-lockdown period exhibited noticeable reductions in concentrations of NO (56.68–74.16%), NO2 (18.06–47.15%), and NOx (35.81–56.52%) for measured data. However, PM10 and PM2.5 levels demonstrated positive gain during lockdown ranging from 21.96–62.00% and 36.24–80.31%, respectively. Comparison of lockdown period with the equivalent period in 2019 also showed reductions in air pollutant concentrations, ranging 43.31–69.75% for NO, 41.52–62.99% for NOx, 37.13–55.54% for NO2, 2.36–19.02% for PM10, and 29.93–40.26% for PM2.5. Back trajectory analysis was performed to show the air mass origin during the pre-lockdown and lockdown periods. Further, the analysis showed a positive association of mobility data with gaseous pollutants and a negative correlation with particulate matter.

Accurately characterizing carbon stock is vital for reporting carbon emissions from forest ecosystems. We studied the estimation of biomass using Sentinel-2 remote sensing data in moist temperate forests in the Galies region of Abbottabad Pakistan. Above-ground biomass (AGB), estimated from 60 field plots, was correlated with vegetation indices obtained from Sentinel-2 image-to-map AGB using regression models. Furthermore, additional explanatory variables were also associated with AGB in the geo-statistical technique, and kriging interpolation was used to predict AGB. The results illustrate that the atmospherically resistant vegetation index (ARVI) is the best index (R2 = 0.67) for estimating AGB. In spectral reflectance, Band 1(Coastal Aerosol 443 nm) performs better than other bands. Multiple linear regression models calibrated with ARVI, NNIR and NDVI yielded better results (R2 = 0.46) with the lowest RMSE (48.53) and MAE (38.42) and were therefore considered better for biomass estimation. On the other hand, in the geo-statistical technique, distance to settlements, ARVI and annual precipitation were significantly correlated with biomass compared to others. In the stepwise regression method, the forward selection resulted in a very significant value (less than 0.000) for ARVI. Therefore, it can be considered best for prediction and used to interpolate AGB through kriging. Compared to the geo-statistical technique, the remote sensing-based models performed relatively well. Regarding potential sites for REDD+ implementation, temporal analysis of Landsat images showed a decrease in forest area from 8896.23 ha in 1988 to 7692.03 ha in 2018. Therefore, this study concludes that the state-of-the-art open-source sensor, the Sentinel-2 data, has significant potential for forest biomass and carbon stock estimation and can be used for robust regional AGB estimation with acceptable accuracy and frequent availability.

Extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are thought to be one of the most exciting gravitational wave sources to be detected with LISA. Due to their complicated nature and weak amplitudes the detection and parameter estimation of such sources is a challenging task. In this paper we present a statistical methodology based on Bayesian inference in which the estimation of parameters is carried out by advanced Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms such as parallel tempering MCMC. We analysed high and medium mass EMRI systems that fall well inside the low frequency range of LISA. In the context of the Mock LISA Data Challenges, our investigation and results are also the first instance in which a fully Markovian algorithm is applied for EMRI searches. Results show that our algorithm worked well in recovering EMRI signals from different (simulated) LISA data sets having single and multiple EMRI sources and holds great promise for posterior computation under more realistic conditions. The search and estimation methods presented in this paper are general in their nature, and can be applied in any other scenario such as AdLIGO, AdVIRGO and Einstein Telescope with their respective response functions.
