Due to urbanization and industrialization, there has been an increase in solid waste generation and has become a global concern and leakage of leachate from landfills contaminate the soil and groundwater and hence can have a severe impact on human health. The present study aimed to determine the composition of toxic metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, As) and heavy metals (Cd, Ba, Hg, Pb) in soil and water by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). To ensure accuracy during the analysis of Cr, Mn, Cu, As, Cd, Ba, Hg, and Pb in real samples, certified reference material (CRM, SRM 2709a) of San Joaquin soil and water (SRM 1640a) were analyzed and results were presented in terms of % recovery studies. The mean concentration of all the metals in soil and water did not exceed the limit set by the European Community (EU), WHO, and US EPA except Cu where the permissible limit defined by the EU is 50–140 mg/kg in soil. The soil is uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with respect to all metals except the Cu and Pb. Among the average daily dose (ADD) of soil, ADDing and ADDinh for children had the maximum dose for all metals than adults while ADDderm was higher in adults. Hazard quotient (HQ) trend in both adults and children was found in order HQing > HQderm > HQinh of soil for all metals except Ba which followed HQing > HQinh > HQderm. Hazard index (HI) values of soil for Cr and Pb in children were 7 and 7.5 times higher than adults respectively. Lifetime cancer risk (LCR) value for Cr by different exposure pathways of soil was 5.361 × 10−4 for children which are at the lower borderline of risk for cancer.

Nanostructured gas sensors find diverse applications in environmental and agricultural monitoring. Herein, adsorption of phosgene (COCl2) on pure and copper-decorated B12N12 (Cu–BN) is analyzed through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Adsorption of copper on B12N12 results in two optimized geometries, named [email protected]66 and [email protected]64, with adsorption energies of −193.81 and −198.45 kJ/mol, respectively. The adsorption/interaction energies of COCl2 on pure BN nanocages are −9.30, −6.90, and −3.70 kJ/mol in G1, G2, and G3 geometries, respectively, whereas the interaction energies of COCl2 on copper-decorated BN are −1.66 and −16.95 kJ/mol for B1 and B2, respectively. To examine the changes in the properties of pure and Cu–BN nanocages, geometric parameters, dipole moment, QNBO, frontier molecular orbitals, and partial density of states (PDOS) are analyzed to comprehensively illustrate the interaction mechanism. The results of these parameters reveal that COCl2 binds more strongly onto copper-doped BN nanocages. Moreover, a higher charge separation is observed in COCl2–Cu–BN geometries as compared to copper-decorated BN geometries. Therefore, these nanocages may be considered as potential candidates for application in phosgene sensors.

The geometric, thermodynamic and electronic properties of Pd–graphene nanocomposites are comprehensively studied through quantum mechanical methods. Geometries of these clusters are optimized with the well-calibrated Minnesota functional M06-2X. The adsorption energies calculated at the M06-2X/LANL2DZ level show better agreement with those calculated from MP2/ANO-RCC-VDZP. Two different representative models for graphene, coronene and hexabenzocoronene, are used. The adsorption energies analysis reveals that the interaction energies increase with the size of the adsorbed cluster. However, for Pdn/hexabenzocoronene, the interaction energies show a sudden drop at Pd8/hexabenzocoronene. The difference in behavior between the interaction energies of Pdn/hexabenzocoronene and Pdn/coronene is attributed to the edge effect present in coronene. The electronic properties, including highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), Fermi level, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), dipole moment, vertical ionization potential (VIP), vertical electron affinity (VEA), chemical hardness (η), softness (S) and chemical potential (μ) are studied. The VIP and VEA reveal that Pdn/coronene clusters are stable in nature with the least reactivity. The HOMO–LUMO energy gaps are reduced with the increase in cluster size. The electronic properties show irregular trends, where the most favorable electronic properties are obtained for Pd7/coronene and Pd10/coronene.

The peels extracted from various citrus species are major source of phenols, flavonoids and anti-microbial agents. The purpose of this study was a detailed investigation of the phytochemical and pharmacological character of the ethanolic (80%), methanolic and acetone extracts of the peel of local variants of orange (lemon, grape fruit, mousami, fruiter, and shikri malta). The extracts were studied to find out the total phenolic contents (TPC), and total flavonoids (TF) present. The antioxidant activities were assessed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging effect, and the reducing power was determined through free radical scavenging activity (FRAP) assays. The sensitivity of four bacterial strains to peels extracts was examined by applying the diffusion disc on agar medium method. It was found that ethanol was the best extracting agent for TPC and TF in fruit peels under study. The highest TPC (21.33 ± 0.06 mg GAE/g) was quantified in orange peels, whereas fruiter contained the lowest TPC (20.40 ± 0.03 mg GAE/g) in ethanolic extract. The highest amount of TF (2.02 ± 0.08 mg QE/g) was quantified in lemon peels, whereas shikri malta contained lowest quantity of TF (1.04 ± 0.02 mg QE/g). The highest free radical scavenging activity (93.1%) of DPPH was exhibited by lemon peels, whereas the least activity (78.6%) was shown by mousami peels. Ethanolic extract of orange peels demonstrated more reducing power while showing an absorption of 1.98, followed by methanolic (1.11) and acetone (0.81) extracts. The inhibition effect of methanolic extract of lemon peels (inhibition zone = 18 mm) against B. subtilis was considerable and comparable to that of ciprofloxacin. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to detect the compounds in ethanolic extract and up to 14 compounds were detected. These compounds were also assessed for their docking scores. Plausible binding modes with polyphenol oxidase and four best compounds were selected for molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to analyze their structural stability with receptor.

Green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) has attracted the researcher's attention due to its rapid, cost-effective, sustainable and eco-friendly nature. Current studies were carried out to perform and investigate the green synthesis of NiO NPs with aqueous (NiO(aqueous)) and ethanolic extracts (NiO(ethanolic)) of Acacia nilotica leaves, respectively. The NPs were characterized by spectroscopic, microscopic and thermometric techniques including FTIR, Raman, XRD, SEM, TGA and DSC. The electrochemical properties, antibacterial potential and haemolytic activities of the synthesized NPs were also examined. XRD patterns revealed the face-centred cubic structures of NiO NPs and a high degree of crystallinity. The average crystallite size of NiO(aqueous) NPs was significantly smaller (16 nm) than that of NiO(ethanolic) NPs (28 nm). SEM images show that NiO NPs are spherical. The synthesized NiO NPs demonstrate good electrochemical stability at an operating potential of −0.5-0.5 V. The inhibition effect of NiO NPs(ethanol) against B. subtilis, was comparable to the ciprofloxacin.
