This is the seventh publication in the series of biennial international conferences, The Future of Information Sciences (INFuture) organised by the Department of Information and Communication Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. Since its beginnings twelve years ago, the INFuture conference has been providing a platform for discussing both theoretical and practical issues in information organization and information integration through the explorations of how developments in information and communication technology influence the future of the field of information sciences. Education and research in information sciences and its interdisciplinary scope and application is of particular interest to this conference which is aimed at researchers and professionals from the broad field of information and communication sciences and related professions. The title of this year's conference is INFuture2019: Knowledge in the Digital Age. The conference explores the influence the information and communication sciences have on the society as a whole. The INFuture2019 conference consists of 26 papers from 58 authors from nine countries -Austria, Croatia, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, South Korea, Sweden and United States.

Citizen science, a core component of the open science movement, emphasizes public participation in scientific research and fosters inclusive, community-driven knowledge production. Libraries are increasingly recognized as critical facilitators of citizen science, offering infrastructure, support, and access to resources. This study investigates the intellectual structure of citizen science within the field of library and information science (LIS) through a co-citation analysis using data retrieved from Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus. The analysis identifies the most frequently co-cited authors and sources, revealing emerging research clusters and thematic trends. Findings show that while citizen science in LIS is a growing area of interest, the field remains relatively fragmented, with limited author interconnectivity and modest citation frequencies. The most frequently co-cited sources include journals focusing on academic and medical librarianship, highlighting the multidimensional relevance of citizen science across subfields. Keyword analysis reveals dominant themes such as open science, crowdsourcing, and digital humanities, which align with libraries’ evolving roles in participatory research. The study provides a comprehensive overview of current research dynamics and collaboration patterns, offering insights into the evolving role of libraries as active participants in citizen science initiatives.

Open science and citizen science aim to make scientific research more inclusive, accessible, and transparent by involving the public in various aspects of the research process. Previous systematic reviews have explored the role of citizen science, focusing on specific regions, library types, or thematic areas. However, a comprehensive, global review addressing all library types and their involvement in citizen science is lacking. This study provides a systematic overview of the global landscape of citizen science in libraries, identifying key theoretical concepts, practical implementations, and national trends. A systematic review was conducted across four major databases: Web of Science, Scopus, LISTA, and Library & Information Science Collection. Papers were included in the research based on their relevance to citizen science in libraries, with criteria encompassing all library types, global geographical coverage, and multilingual sources. A total of 58 papers directly addressing libraries and citizen science were analyzed. The findings reveal that the analyzed works address several key theoretical topics and concepts, including open science as a central concept, libraries as facilitators and hubs for engagement, community engagement and crowdsourcing, educational roles and capacity building, digital humanities and historical projects, and contributions to sustainable development. Examples of practical implementations include transcription and annotation projects, crowdsourcing and community engagement, health and environmental citizen science, and digital innovation. At the national level, studies focus on higher education libraries, public libraries, perceptions and collaboration, frameworks for sustainability, and bridging the gaps between science and society. Although the analysis provides valuable insights into citizen science initiatives, the study could not directly confirm that these publications have shaped or influenced specific projects or their recommendations, highlighting this as an area for further research. This research concludes that libraries worldwide are well-positioned to act as key enablers of citizen science by addressing challenges and adopting best practices. This review highlights diverse approaches to developing a library’s roadmap for engaging in citizen science initiatives.

Gamification is widely used to enhance student engagement in higher education, yet its effects in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts, particularly from a Self-Determination Theory perspective, remain underexplored. This study examines whether gamification in a Moodle-based ESP course is associated with differences in students’ course satisfaction. A total of 94 undergraduate students participated in a quasi-experimental study, enrolling in either a gamified or non-gamified course format. Gamification was implemented using the Level Up plugin and H5P interactive activities. Students’ perceptions were measured using selected items from the Course Satisfaction Questionnaire. Non-parametric analyses (Mann–Whitney U tests with Holm–Bonferroni correction) were applied. Results show statistically significant differences favoring the gamified format in engagement and enjoyment, motivation to participate, and willingness to recommend the course. Differences in perceived competence and support for individual learning were positive but not statistically significant. These findings suggest that gamification in ESP is associated with more favorable motivational and affective dimensions of course satisfaction, while effects on broader learning-related perceptions remain less conclusive. This study contributes by providing evidence from a controlled LMS-based implementation and highlights the importance of theoretically grounded gamification design.
