Climate-related disasters increasingly threaten over one-third of the global population, specifical communities within 100 km of coastal zones. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago with the second-longest coastline, faces tidal (Rob) flooding from high tides, land subsidence, and sea-level rise. This study assess fish farmers’ vulnerability to Rob flooding in Java’s Indramayu District. Our Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI)’s development involved 150 questionnaires, focus group discussion, and key-informant interviews between 16 and 20 October 2019. It found a high vulnerability, a SoVI score of + 1.76 comprising nine principal components (PCs): external support and government mitigation, local knowledge, income, expenditure, family size, seasonal-expenditure, education, experience, and ethnicity. Contributing to ‘vulnerability’ and ‘resilience’ concepts, it highlights community memory of repeated disasters and its impact on local adaptive capacity. Findings inform policymakers to address the PCs influencing vulnerability, including critically-needed livelihood support and early-warning systems relevant to the country’s 12,000 + coastal-villages and developing countries where over 90% of fishermen live.
The act of swimming in formation by species such as Euphausia superba, Antarctic krill, is assumed to be regulated by a sensitivity to the characteristic and spatially elaborate flow field produced by this species of shrimp. We used a related species, Meganyctiphanes, North Atlantic krill, to visualize the flow field produced by tethered shrimps in an aquarium. In this situation, the propulsion jet flow some centimeters behind the shrimp is surrounded by a vortex ring of recoiling water motion from which, if the vortex is also produced by unrestrained swimming shrimp, a following shrimp hypothetically can draw forces of lift and propulsion to decrease energy expense in long-distance migration. Two antennular sensitivities to water vibration in frequency ranges 5–40 and 40–150 Hz were calibrated, and the activity of connected interneurons was traced into the abdominal pleopod-carrying segments. Water oscillation of 3–10 Hz frequency, applied to the antennules, was shown to entrain a closely synchronous pleopod beat in the stimulated specimens.

Research on the abundance of microplastic in green mussel Perna viridis, water and sediments in Kamal Muara, North Jakarta in September 2017 has been done. The research determined the abundance of microplastic in water, sediment and green mussel (base on the sizes and microplastic storage organs), also the correlation between abundance of microplastic in green mussel, water and sediments. Samples of green mussel, water and sediments were taken from 3 different stations with a distance of about 500 meters. Analysis of abundance of microplastic was done by isolating microplastic in each sample. The isolation of the green mussel samples was done by dissolving the mussels in the HNO3 solutionfor 24 hours and added saturated NaCl solution. The microplastics from water and sediment samples were separated by immersion of samples in a saturated NaCl solution. The results obtained were, on average, abundance of microplastic in green mussel size 3, 6, and 9 cm i.e., 5.35; 24.99; and 39 particles/gram. The microplastic fiber was dominant in mussel sample. The average abundance of microplastic in water and sediment are 13.15 particles/L of sea water and 0.92 particles/gram of dry sediment respectively. The microplastic film was dominant in water and sediment samples. Meanwhile, pellet was not found in all three samples. There was a correlation between abundance of microplastic with green mussel size, as well as with abundance of microplastic of film and fiber in water and sediment.

This study was done to identify the type and amount of microplastic particle in the sediment, water and the horn snail Telescopium telescopium (soft tissue, respiratory and digestive organs) in the coast of Rambut Island, Jakarta. This research also aimed to know the correlation between the amount of microplastic particles in the sediment and the snail body mass. The result showed that average amount of microplastic were found 764.81 particles/ind in the snail, 31.7 particles/g in sediment and 15.46 particles/mL water samples. The microplastic type of film was dominant in all of the samples, with average amount 368.51 particles/ind in snail, 15 particles/g sediment and 9.46 particles/mL water samples, respectively. The respiratory organ contained higher microplastics (102.33 particles/ind) than the digestive organ (66.85 particles/ind). There were significantly positive correlation (r=0.744) between amount of microplastics in the snail and the snail body mass.

Plastic waste is the dominant type of marine waste found. The plastics are degraded in physics, chemistry and biology to a size of <5 mm. Sea cucumbers are deposite feeder type animals that get food by stirring up sediments so that there is microplastic content in sea cucumbers. This research aims not only to analyze the microplastic density in sediments and sea cucumbers but also to analyze the correlation between microplastic density in sediments and sea cucumbers. This research was conducted from February to April 2018. The research data was the descriptive with purposive random sampling and correlational studies method. Based on calculation analysis, microplastic found in sediments and sea cucumbers on Tidung Island and Bira Besar Island, consists of 4 (four) types. There are fiber with 2722 particles/g; 1982 particles/g, fragment 254 particles/g; 547 particles/g, film 100 particles/g; 50 particles/g and pellets 14 particles/g; 9 particles/g. Microplastic found in sea cucumbers consists of Tidung Island and Bira Island. Consist 4 (four) types, which are fiber, 2033 particles/g; 1247 particles/g, 137 particle fragments/g; 183 particles/g, film 60 particles/g; 69 particles/g and pellets 9 particles/g; 4 particles/g. Correlation results showed a positive correlation with microplastic in sediments and in sea cucumbers.
