Biography

Dr. Cherie A Motti completed her bachelor’s degree in Science (1990) and her Honours in Chemistry (1991) at the University of New England. She then received her PhD in Chemistry at the Griffith University (1996). Dr. Cherie A Motti is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. She has also recently been appointed as the AIMS@JCU Research Director at the same institution (2023–present; and a member since 2010). Her research focuses on the use of spectroscopic techniques, including FTMS, LC-MS, NMR, LC-MS/UV-SPE-NMR, and FTIR, to investigate the role of chemical signalling in the establishment of coral symbioses, coral recruitment, disease and stress responses, and in the aggregation, foraging and predation of crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS). In this capacity, she leads the CCIP (2020-present) in developing semiochemical technologies to control CoTS. Moreover, Dr. Cherie A Motti’s research interests extend to water quality and the impacts of microplastic contamination on marine life. Supporting this, she is an active member of IMOS (2021–present), OBPS (2023-present), NMRC (2023-present), and IMDOS (2024-present).
