Cadmium (Cd) inhibits plant growth, perturbs nutrient uptake, and affects chloroplast ultrastructure. The role of Cd stress in affecting growth and physiology and ameliorative effects of gibberellins (GAs) in Cd-induced toxicity in mung bean are lesser-known. This study comprehensively investigated Cd stress (CdCl2, IC50—500 µM L−1) with or without GA3 on mung bean (Vigna radiata L. Var. SML-668). In our methodology, a total of 80 mung bean plants (15 days old of uniform height) were divided into four groups, and each group (n = 20) was subjected to four different treatments (Control, CdCl2, GA3, CdCl2+GA3) twice during the entire life cycle of mung bean plants (until harvest 85–90 days). Results revealed negative impacts of Cd stress on shoot morphometry (plant height, leaf surface area, stem diameter, shoot fresh weight, number of leaves, number of pods, length, and diameter of pods), root morphometry (root length, root surface area, root dry weight, nodule number and nodule diameter), photosynthetic pigments, and agronomic traits. GA3 application ameliorated Cd stress by modulating shoot and root growth, improving overall plant metabolism, photosynthetic pigments, and shoot and root morphometry and transcript abundance of VrPCS1, VrIRT1, VrIRT2 and VrCD29. Thus, we propose GA3 application for the effective management of Cd-induced phytotoxicity in mung bean plants.

Phosphate (P) is a crucial macronutrient for normal plant growth and development. The P availability in soils is a limitation factor, and understanding genetic factors playing roles in plant adaptation for improving P uptake is of great biological importance. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have become indispensable tools in unraveling the genetic basis of complex traits in various plant species. In this study, a comprehensive GWAS was conducted on diverse tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) accessions grown under normal and low P conditions for two weeks. Plant traits such as shoot height, primary root length, plant biomass, shoot inorganic content (SiP), and root inorganic content (RiP) were measured. Among several models of GWAS tested, the Bayesian-information and linkage disequilibrium iteratively nested keyway (BLINK) models were used for the identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Among all the traits analyzed, significantly associated SNPs were recorded for PB, i.e., 1 SNP (SSL4.0CH10_49261145) under control P, SiP, i.e., 1 SNP (SSL4.0CH08_58433186) under control P and 1 SNP (SSL4.0CH08_51271168) under low P and RiP i.e., 2 SNPs (SSL4.0CH04_37267952 and SSL4.0CH09_4609062) under control P and 1 SNP (SSL4.0CH09_3930922) under low P condition. The identified SNPs served as genetic markers pinpointing regions of the tomato genome linked to P-responsive traits. The novel candidate genes associated with the identified SNPs were further analyzed for their protein-protein interactions using STRING. The study provided novel candidate genes, viz. Solyc10g050370 for PB under control, Solyc08g062490, and Solyc08g062500 for SiP and Solyc09g010450, Solyc09g010460, Solyc09g010690, and Solyc09g010710 for RiP under low P condition. These findings offer a glimpse into the genetic diversity of tomato accessions’ responses to P uptake, highlighting the potential for tailored breeding programs to develop P-efficient tomato varieties that could adapt to varying soil conditions, making them crucial for sustainable agriculture and addressing global challenges, such as soil depletion and food security.

Drought stress in maize often results in poor growth and reduced yield. Antioxidants play vital role in management of abiotic stresses. Drought or water deficit are detrimental to young seedlings establishment and transition from vegetative to reproductive growth in maize. Paclobutrazol (PBZ) has been widely used to confer abiotic stress tolerance in plants, however, its impact on root developmental attributes in maize and their relevance in drought management are least understood. Comprehensive experiments over a three year period (2017-2019) under early deficit (EDI) and terminal deficit (TDI) irrigation with or without paclobutrazol (PBZ) were conducted on five maize varieties (DDKL, DKC-9144, PG-2475, PG-2320 and Bio-9621). Plant shoot and root growth kinetics, phenological changes and physiological perturbations including antioxidant profile coupled with molecular regulation of root traits, showed DKC-9144 as best variety in terms of plant fitness and reproductive performance under deficit irrigation. Root developmental rates were key contributors towards improved plant biomass and cob yield under deficit irrigation tolerance. Structural equation modelling (SEM) demonstrated specific contribution of different root types (crown, brace and seminal roots) in maize towards improving water use efficiency, cob yield and plant height. From SEM, seminal root surface area and root length are proposed desired traits to improve water use efficiency and cob yield in DKC-9144 under deficit irrigation. Bi-variate analyses of twenty key traits of plant fitness and agronomic importance showed a strong correlation ( r ) between root traits and improved growth performance and yield stability indices.
