Prof. Dr. Karthik Shankar received his B. Tech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 2000 from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras in Chennai, India, where he was awarded the prestigious Governors Gold Medal for all-round excellence while convocating from his graduating class of engineers. He received his M.S. (2002) and Ph.D. (2007) degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Penn State University’s Materials Research Institute from 2007 to 2009. Prof. Dr. Karthik Shankar was an Eastman Kodak Research Fellow in 2003. He joined the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor in August 2009. In 2010, he received the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award. He was seconded to the NRC National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT) from 2012-2017 and currently leads the NINT project on Perovskites for Solar Energy Conversion. He obtained early tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor in July 2013. He is the author of over 100 refereed publications that have collectively been cited over 10,000 times. He is also listed as an inventor on seven provisional patent applications. He currently champions the solar energy theme and leads research into CO2 photoreduction at the CFREF-funded Future Energy Systems Research Institute at the University of Alberta.
