Harnessing renewable energy (RE) sources to power desalination systems can migrate the pressures of freshwater scarcity and fossil fuel depletion. In this paper, a novel mathematical framework was developed to assess the sustainability of different RE-powered desalination systems, which is very essential for their portfolio selection, by resorting to the fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (MAMD) methods. In the framework, an evaluation system including ten attributes from four dimensions is introduced, while fuzzy triangular numbers and interval values are employed to capture the epistemic and aleatory uncertainties of decision information, respectively. More importantly, three fuzzy MADM methods were proposed in the framework to make the following methodological contributions: (1) fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory-based analytic network process (DANP) offers a reliable weighting result by addressing the interrelationships among the attributes; (2) fuzzy full consistency method (FUCOM) can easily but rigorously quantify the qualitative attributes by using the simplified pair-wise comparisons; (3) interval vector-aided technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (VATOPSIS) generates a rational ranking sequence by incorporating the balance among multi-attributes. To illustrate the proposed framework, six RE-powered desalination systems were studied, showing that the solar thermal-powered multi-effect distillation would be the best option under current conditions. Finally, the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed framework were verified by results comparison and discussion.

We investigate how framing affect consumers’ willingness to buy green electricity using a contingent valuation method. A sample of 1022 respondents was divided into two nearly equal sized sub-samples chosen from an Internet panel. One subsample received a positively framed version of the questionnaire regarding signing up to a green electricity contract, and the other subsample received a negatively framed version of the questionnaire. As expected, consumers displayed stronger intention to buy green electricity when the situation was framed in a positive manner (i.e., most Danish households have already bought it), as compared to the situation framed in a negative manner (i.e., only a few Danish households have bought green electricity). The theoretical explanation can be formulated in terms of the theory of social norms. The framing effect also signals the public good side of green electricity in that there seems to be a free rider problem. The relatively low intention to buy green electricity in the negatively framed question indicates that the free-rider incentive is particularly powerful in large groups, where an individual may perceive that her or his behavior will have only little influence on the collective outcome. The managerial implications are also discussed.

Encouraging residential electricity consumers switch from flat-rate electricity tariff to peak and off-peak pricing is important task for demand response management. But will consumers accept the peak and off-peak pricing? . This paper presents the results of a national survey with a sample size of 3863 residential electricity consumers throughout China. The result reveals that nearly two-third of the residential energy consumers are willing to accept the peak and off-peak pricing. Consumer knowledge is the key driver for consumer acceptance. In addition, the influences of consumers’ energy consumption and consumers’ socio-economic background profiles on consumer acceptance were also examined in the estimation. Four barriers to consumer acceptance were also identified. Among which, lack of the economic benefit is the primary hurdle. Finally, the managerial implications of this research are discussed.

Replacing all oil boilers with renewable energy technologies by 2035 is part of the national energy strategy 2050 in Denmark. Individual heating is supposed to supply around one-fourth of the total residential heating after 2035. About 205,703 homes will need to replace their current oil boilers. This study investigates the drivers for decision makers when adopting different renewable heating technologies. A total of 11 factors that embrace the economical, technological and environmental aspect of the alternative renewable heating technology are identified, and these were used for the selection of the alternative renewable heating technologies. Three renewable heating technologies: solar heating, heat pumps and wood pellet boilers are used in the estimation. The multi-criteria decision making analysis shows that solar heating is considered as the best alternative, and heat pumps is the second best, wood pellet boiler is the least attractive among three alternatives. It can be noted that solar heating and heat pumps are close alternatives.

Life cycle sustainability assessment is meaningful for the decision-makers/stakeholders to select the most sustainable option among multiple alternatives; however, there are usually various severe uncertainty problems in sustainability-oriented decision-making, i.e., the vagueness and ambiguity that existed in human judgments and the lack of information. This study aims at developing a novel life cycle multi-criteria sustainability assessment method for helping the decision-makers/stakeholders to determine the sustainability level of the industrial and energy systems. In part 1, an improved interval analytic hierarchy process (AHP) which allows multiple decision-makers/stakeholders to participate in the decision-making was developed to determine the weights of the criteria which were used in life cycle sustainability assessment. It is usually difficult for the decision-makers/stakeholders to use the numbers from 1 to 9 and their reciprocals for determining the comparison matrix when using the traditional AHP method for weight calculation, because human judgments usually involve various uncertainties. In order to the overcome this weak point of the traditional AHP, an improved AHP, so-called interval AHP, in which, multiple decision-makers/stakeholders are allowed to participate in the decision-making and allowed to use interval numbers instead of crisp numbers to establish the comparison matrix for determining the weights of the criteria for life cycle sustainability assessment, has been developed. The proposed method was used to determine the weights of the four aspects for life cycle sustainability assessment including economic, safety, social, and environmental aspects. Five representative stakeholders were invited to participate in the decision-making. After Monte Carlo simulation, the final weights of the four aspects have been determined with the proposed interval AHP. An interval AHP method was developed for determining the weights of the criteria for life cycle sustainability assessment; the decision-makers are allowed to use interval numbers to establish the comparison matrix for weight calculation. The weighting coefficients determined by Monte Carlo method can accurately reflect the preferences and willingness of multi-actor comparing with the traditional AHP method. This paper merely presents a novel method to calculate the weights of the criteria for life cycle sustainability assessment, but the method for determining the sustainability performance has been presented in part 2.

The concept of sustainability and sustainable development has been widely incorporated in energy and industrial systems. This paper is the second part of a two-paper series dealing with multi-actor multi-criteria sustainability assessment of alternative energy and industrial systems in life cycle perspective under uncertainties. The criteria system including four macroscopic aspects (environmental, safety, social and economic aspects) has been developed for sustainability assessment of energy and industrial systems. An improved extension theory which can address interval decision-making matrix has been developed for determining the sustainability degree of the energy and industrial systems. The weights of the criteria for sustainability assessment are the first part of the two-paper series. An illustrative case has been studied by the proposed multi-criteria decision-making method, and the sustainability of six alternative options for the production of a 1-t product was investigated. The sustainability degree of these six alternative options can be determined by the proposed method. A methodology for multi-actor multi-criteria sustainability assessment of energy and industrial options has been developed in this study, the traditional extension theory has been modified to deal with the uncertainty problems and the proposed method can rank the alternative energy and industrial systems with the decision-making matrix in which the data of the alternatives with respect to the evaluation criteria are intervals. In the improved extension theory, sustainability has been dived into five grades: excellent, good, satisfied, barely adequate and fail. According to the method for calculating the weights of the criteria for sustainability assessment proposed in part 1, these weights were used to calculate the integrated dependent degree which is a measure of what degree an alternative belongs to the classical fields. An optimal programming model for maximizing the satisfied degree has been developed to rank the sustainability sequence of the alternative options and determine the sustainability degree of each alternative.

Purpose – Voluntary carbon offsets have the potential to contribute to reduce carbon emission and thereby meet the national and international target of carbon emission. However, the public support for such scheme in the energy sector is unclear. The purpose of this paper was to invest whether and why residential energy consumers are willing to pay to offset the CO2 emission from electricity consumption. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected using a self-administrated online questionnaire. A sample of size 1,022 respondents with useable questionnaires was received. Contingent valuation method is used to measure the willingness to pay (WTP) for carbon offset. Finally, the ordered logit model is used in modeling willing to pay for carbon offset. Findings – The results show that there is significant support from residential energy consumers to offset their CO2 emission from electricity consumption. The WTP is motivated by consumers’ perceptions toward carbon offset, moral obligation and individual’s social-demographic backgrounds. Originality/value – This paper contributes a new insight on whether and why residential energy consumers would be willing to pay to offset carbon emission from electricity consumption.

We examine the consumers' trade-off decisions between a variety of hypothetical electricity products in Denmark. Using the stated preference data from 1012 respondents representing the Danish population, we identify four consumer segments based on consumers' choice of electricity products incorporating consumers' attitudes towards adoption of green electricity together with consumers' socio-demographic variables: the value seeking consumers (38%), the green electricity preferring consumers (32%), the price sensitive consumers (21%) and the mixed renewable sourced preferring consumers (9%). The findings have implications for electricity retailers regarding how to change their marketing mix (e.g. adapt and differentiate their products) in order to address existing demand in a competitive market. For energy regulators, the findings suggest that there is a need to diversify renewable energy sources as the share of renewable energy is increasing and the expansion of renewable energy should not be dependent on importing renewables.
