The remote-sensing ecological index (RSEI), which is built with greenness, moisture, dryness, and heat, has become increasingly recognized for its use in urban eco-environment quality assessment. To improve the reliability of such assessment, we propose a new RSEI-based urban eco-environment quality assessment method where the impact of RSEI indicators on the eco-environment quality and the seasonal change of RSEI are examined and considered. The northern Chinese municipal city of Tianjin was selected as a case study to test the proposed method. Landsat images acquired in spring, summer, autumn, and winter were obtained and processed for three different years (1992, 2005, and 2018) for a multitemporal analysis. Results from the case study show that both the contributions of RSEI indicators to eco-environment quality and RSEI values vary with the season and that such seasonal variability should be considered by normalizing indicator measures differently and using more representative remote-sensing images, respectively. The assessed eco-environment quality of Tianjin was, overall, improving owing to governmental environmental protection measures, but the damage caused by rapid urban expansion and sea reclamation in the Binhai New Area still needs to be noted. It is concluded that our proposed urban eco-environment quality assessment method is viable and can provide a reliable assessment result that helps gain a more accurate understanding of the evolution of the urban eco-environment quality over seasons and years.

The diagnostic horizon in a soil is reflective of the environment in which it developed and the inherent characteristics of the material, therefore quantitative approaches to horizon delineation should focus on the diagnostic horizon. Moreover, it can enable the exchange and transfer of soil information between different taxonomic systems. This study aims to explore the use of deep learning and RGB images to train a soil diagnostic horizon identification model that can help field workers determine soil horizon information quickly, efficiently, easily, and cost-effectively. A total of 331 soil profile images of the main soil categories (five soil orders, including Primosols, Ferrosols, Argosols, Anthrosols, and Cambosols) from Hubei and Jiangxi Provinces were used. Each soil profile image was preprocessed and augmented to 10 images and then inputted into the UNet++ architecture. The mean intersection over union and pixel accuracy of the model were 71.24% and 82.66%, respectively. Results show that the model could accurately identify and delineate the soil diagnostic horizons. Moreover, the model performance varied considerably due to the definition of the horizon and whether the diagnostic conditions applied to a wide range of visual features on RGB images, the number of samples, and the soil characteristics of the study area.

With the increasing global focus on renewable energy, distributed rooftop photovoltaics (PVs) are gradually becoming an important form of energy generation. Effective monitoring of rooftop PV information can obtain their spatial distribution and installed capacity, which is the basis used by management departments to formulate regulatory policies. Due to the time-consuming and labor-intensive problems involved in manual monitoring, remote-sensing-based monitoring methods are getting more attention. Currently, remote-sensing-based distributed rooftop PV monitoring methods are mainly used as household rooftop PVs, and most of them use aerial or satellite images with a resolution higher than 0.3 m; there is no research on industrial and commercial rooftop PVs. This study focuses on the distributed industrial and commercial rooftop PV information extraction method based on the Gaofen-7 satellite with a resolution of 0.65 m. First, the distributed industrial and commercial rooftop PV dataset based on Gaofen-7 satellite and the optimized public PV datasets were constructed. Second, an advanced MANet model was proposed. Compared to MANet, the proposed model removed the downsample operation in the first stage of the encoder and added an auxiliary branch containing the Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module in the decoder. Comparative experiments were conducted between the advanced MANet and state-of-the-art semantic segmentation models. In the Gaofen-7 satellite PV dataset, the Intersection over Union (IoU) of the advanced MANet in the test set was improved by 13.5%, 8.96%, 2.67%, 0.63%, and 0.75% over Deeplabv3+, U2net-lite, U2net-full, Unet, and MANet. In order to further verify the performance of the proposed model, experiments were conducted on optimized public PV datasets. The IoU was improved by 3.18%, 3.78%, 3.29%, 4.98%, and 0.42%, demonstrating that it outperformed the other models.
