Manufacturing systems are becoming more sophisticated and expensive, particularly with the development of the intelligent industry. The complexity of the architecture and concept of Smart Manufacturing (SM) makes it vulnerable to several faults and failures that impact the entire behavior of the manufacturing system. It is crucial to find and detect any potential anomalies and faults as soon as possible because of the low tolerance for performance deterioration, productivity decline, and safety issues. To overcome these issues, a variety of approaches exist in the literature. However, the multitude of techniques make it difficult to choose the appropriate method in relation to a given context. This paper proposes a new architecture for a conceptual model of intelligent fault diagnosis and self-healing for smart manufacturing systems. Based on this architecture, a review method for the different approaches, sub-approaches and methods used to develop a Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) and Self-Healing-Fault-Tolerant (SH-FT) strategy dedicated to smart manufacturing is defined. Moreover, this paper reviews and analyzes more than 256 scientific articles on fault diagnosis and self-healing approaches and their applications in SM in the last decade. Finally, promising research directions in the field of resilient smart manufacturing are highlighted.

There are a variety of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms for improving the energy efficiency of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The mode of implementation (digital or analog), design simplicity, sensor requirements, convergence speed, range of efficacy, and hardware costs are the primary distinctions between these algorithms. Selecting an appropriate algorithm is critical for users, as it influences the electrical efficiency of PV systems and lowers costs by reducing the number of solar panels required to achieve the desired output. This research is relevant since PV systems are an alternative and sustainable solution for energy production. The main aim of this paper is to review the current advances in MPPT algorithms. This paper first undertakes a systematic literature review (SLR) of various MPPT algorithms, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses; a detailed summary of the related reviews on this topic is then presented. Next, quantitative and qualitative comparisons of the most popular and efficient MPPT methods are performed. This comparison is based on simulation results to provide efficient benchmarking of MPPT algorithms. This benchmarking validates that intelligent MPPTs, such as artificial neural network (ANN), fuzzy logic control (FLC), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), outperform other approaches in tracking the MPPT of PV systems. Specifically, the ANN technique had the highest efficiency of 98.6%, while the ANFIS and FLC methods were close behind with efficiencies of 98.34% and 98.29%, respectively. Therefore, it is recommended that these intelligent MPPT techniques be considered for use in future photovoltaic systems to achieve optimal power output and maximize energy production.

Short-term Photovoltaic (PV) Power Forecasting (STPF) is considered a topic of utmost importance in smart grids. The deployment of STPF techniques provides fast dispatching in the case of sudden variations due to stochastic weather conditions. This paper presents an efficient data-driven method based on enhanced Random Forest (RF) model. The proposed method employs an ensemble of attribute selection techniques to manage bias/variance optimization for STPF application and enhance the forecasting quality results. The overall architecture strategy gathers the relevant information to constitute a voted feature-weighting vector of weather inputs. The main emphasis in this paper is laid on the knowledge expertise obtained from weather measurements. The feature selection techniques are based on local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations, Extreme Boosting Model, and Elastic Net. A comparative performance investigation using an actual database, collected from the weather sensors, demonstrates the superiority of the proposed technique versus several data-driven machine learning models when applied to a typical distributed PV system.

This paper develops a novel approach to characterise muscle force from electromyography (EMG) signals, which are the electric activities generated by muscles. Based on the nonlinear Hammerstein–Wiener model, the first part of this study outlines the estimation of different sub-models to mimic diverse force profiles. The second part fixes the appropriate sub-models of a multimodel library and computes the contribution of sub-models to estimate the desired force. Based on a pre-existing dataset, the obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach to estimate muscle force from EMG signals with reasonable accuracy. The coefficient of determination ranges from 0.6568 to 0.9754 using the proposed method compared with a range of 0.5060 to 0.9329 using an artificial neural network (ANN), generating significantly different accuracy (p < 0.03). Results imply that the use of multimodel approach can improve the accuracy in proportional control of prostheses.

The integration of Photovoltaic (PV) systems requires the implementation of potential PV power forecasting techniques to deal with the high intermittency of weather parameters. In the PV power prediction process, Genetic Programming (GP) based on the Symbolic Regression (SR) model has a widespread deployment since it provides an effective solution for nonlinear problems. However, during the training process, SR models might miss optimal solutions due to the large search space for the leaf generations. This paper proposes a novel hybrid model that combines SR and Deep Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) for one-month-ahead PV power forecasting. A case study analysis using a real Australian weather dataset was conducted, where the employed input features were the solar irradiation and the historical PV power data. The main contribution of the proposed hybrid SR-MLP algorithm are as follows: (1) The training speed was significantly improved by eliminating unimportant inputs during the feature selection process performed by the Extreme Boosting and Elastic Net techniques; (2) The hyperparameters were preserved throughout the training and testing phases; (3) The proposed hybrid model made use of a reduced number of layers and neurons while guaranteeing a high forecasting accuracy; (4) The number of iterations due to the use of SR was reduced. The presented simulation results demonstrate the higher forecasting accuracy (reductions of more than 20% for Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and 30 % for Mean Absolute Error (MAE) in addition to an improvement in the R2 evaluation metric) and robustness (preventing the SR from converging to local minima with the help of the ANN branch) of the proposed SR-MLP model as compared to individual SR and MLP models.

The concept of sustainability in agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) is gaining traction among researchers and practitioners. There has been a considerable effort to define and identify frameworks for assessing, monitoring, and improving sustainability practices within systems and organizations. The multi-capital approach presents an alternative tool for sustainability that integrates various types of capital to provide a deeper understanding and assessment of the impacts across different facets of the system. This review systematically examines existing research on AFSC sustainability indicators and assessment from a multi-capital perspective. Based on 106 articles, 116 indicators from various databases (Web of Science, Scopus, and others) are identified. These indicators are assigned to specific AFSC actors and forms of capital. Their role in evaluating the AFSCs through a sustainability lens is examined. The analysis also identifies the most significant capital associated with each actor. This analysis leads to the development of a structured framework that helps actors assess their resources and pinpoint sustainability challenges. Following this review, a theoretical framework is derived, connecting sustainability capital, key themes, and relevant Sustainable Development Goals. This provides a comprehensive tool for evaluating assets and guiding strategic actions for AFSC.
