Physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyles appear to be critical factors in developing mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and other diseases in developed societies. This study analysed the associations between physical activity level (PAL) and mental health using the Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (GHQ12) in the Spanish population before the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional design, based on data from the Spanish National Health Survey (ENSE 2017), the last health survey before the pandemic, was carried out with 17,641 participants. Data did not follow a normal distribution, so non-parametric tests were used to analyse intergroup differences, differences at baseline and post hoc, and correlations between variables. Associations were found between the PAL, mental health and all its dimensions. The groups that performed moderate and intense PAL showed lower values in the GHQ12 questionnaire than those who walked or were inactive. Thus, higher PAL was associated with better mental health indicators, including successful coping, self-esteem and stress. This study provides a framework to compare outcomes between the pre- and post-pandemic periods, as the ENSE is performed every five years.

Research shows that exercise training programmes lead to several improvements in older adults’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and well-being. This study will examine the effects of an active retirement programme on Portuguese older adults, investigating its effects on body composition, physical fitness, HRQoL, and physical activity level (PAL). Therefore, a parallel-group randomised controlled trial will be conducted, including body composition (height and body weight), physical fitness (strength, flexibility, agility, postural control, and gait), HRQoL, and PAL assessments before and after the application of the programme. The programme will be carried out for six months, two days per week (45 min), plus a year of follow-up. The programme will consist of six circuits with eight physical exercises each. The circuits will change at the end of the four weeks (one monthly circuit). The exercises’ difficulty will increase throughout the programme, with alternatives for all the participants. If the effectiveness of the programme is demonstrated, implementation in different services and municipalities could be advised, as the actors involved in health and social services should promote the well-being of their citizens through, among others, health-related physical activity and the prevention of diseases associated with inactivity.

Objective: To explore the use of smartphones at mealtimes by children in fast food restaurants in the city of Barcelona and to assess the variables associated with this use. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Data from 1616 children of estimated ages between 4 to 10 years were collected in fast-food restaurants in the ten districts of Barcelona between October 2021 and July 2022. The percentage of smartphone use, overall and according to covariates, were calculated. Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests, and crude and adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance, were carried out to assess the association between use and covariates. Results: Direct observation revealed that in 28.1% of meals with children at fast food restaurants, children used smartphones. Smartphone use was significantly higher in older children if their caregivers were younger than 30 years and when there was no caregiver-child interaction. In the adjusted model, higher patterns of smartphone use were associated with older children (aPR [95% CI]: 1.36[1.20-1.55]) and younger parents (aPR [95% CI]: 1.38[1.09-1.73]). Conclusions: Almost one in three meals with children at fast-food restaurants in Barcelona involves smartphone use. This finding underlines the importance of raising awareness of responsible screen use and promoting healthier environments for children at mealtimes.

Background/Objective: The greatest anthropometric and physiological changes occur during adolescence. Assessment of growth patterns is necessary to prevent future health risks. Aims: To describe the values of glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure, triceps skinfold, and abdominal circumference according to gender and age (between 12 and 17 years), as well as explore the differences between body weight conditions. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, including 4130 adolescents between 12 and 17 years old. SBP and DBP, HbA1c, triceps skinfold, and abdominal circumference were evaluated. Results: Significant differences were observed between males and females for HbA1c (p < 0.001), SBP (p < 0.001), triceps curl (p < 0.001), and abdominal circumference (p < 0.001), independently of the age group. Regardless of gender and age groups, significant differences were observed between overweight/obese and normal-weight adolescents in SBP (p < 0.001), DBP (p < 0.001 to 0.009), triceps skinfold (p < 0.001), and abdominal perimeter (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our findings revealed higher SBP, DBP, triceps skinfold, and abdominal circumference in overweight/obese adolescents compared to normal-weight adolescents in both genders.

Background: Growth charts constitute an essential tool for monitoring adolescents’ development. In Extremadura, the percentile growth charts by Faustino Orbegozo Foundation are used. However, they are based on Basque Country population data. Considering socioeconomic differences between Spanish regions, growth chart data could not be appropriate. Aims: to describe the percentile distribution of adolescents from Extremadura and compare these percentiles with those proposed by the Faustino Orbegozo Eizaguirre Foundation that are currently applied in the Extremadura Health Service. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 4130 adolescents (12–17 years) participated into the study. Bodyweight and height were assessed. Results: Significant differences were found comparing real measured values with commonly used reference tables for bodyweight at all ages between 12 and 13 years and at 14 years in both gender (p < 0.05). Differences were also found in boys at 15, 16.5 and 17 years (p < 0.05). Regarding height, significant differences were reported at 12, 13, 14.5, 15, 16.5 and 17 years old (p < 0.05) in males; while females’ results only revealed differences at 12, 12.5, 14.5 and 15.5 years (p < 0.05). BMI outcomes showed differences in both gender at 12, 12.5, 13, 14 and 15 years old (p < 0.05). Differences were also found at 16 and 14.5 years for boys and girls, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Bodyweight, height and BMI of adolescents from Extremadura differ of the reference values currently applied. Hence, this study’s outcomes suggest the need to use new indicators, adapted to the physical and anthropometric reality of children and young people to avoid the possible normalisation of situations of thinness, overweight or obesity.

Objectives: This study aimed to describe the profile and identify the clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with emergency department (ED) use among patients aged ≥65 years. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of patients aged ≥65 years who were seen in the emergency department of the Hospital de Mérida (Spain) in 2019, the year before the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Descriptive statistics were calculated for dependent variables such as hours of ED stay, total number of visits, reasons for discharge, and diagnostic specialty, disaggregated by gender, season, age group, day type (work or holiday), shift, and population area (rural or urban). Results: Significant differences in ED hours were found according to gender (p < 0.001), season (p = 0.024), age group (p < 0.001), attention shift (p < 0.001), and population area (p = 0.003). Discharge to home was the most common destination (63.5%), followed by hospital admission (25.7%). Admissions for gastrointestinal surgery and neurology were predominant in men, and admissions for internal medicine and trauma were predominant in women. Patients aged 65–79 years were admitted to internal medicine, and those over 80 years were admitted to cardiology. Among patients who presented to the hospital’s emergency department and required admission, 51.5% were men aged ≥ 75 years, rising to 53.3% among those aged 65 to 74 years. The clinical areas were related to cardiology (27.67%) and pneumology (20.63%). Conclusions: Demands for ED care in those over 65 years of age are associated with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, which can be used to better plan and manage resources and improve user satisfaction.
