Adane Gebeyehu Demissie is a plant genomics and biotechnology researcher with more than a decade of experience in crop improvement. His academic path reflects a deliberate, international training in the field: an MSc in Plant Breeding from Bahir Dar University, followed by an MSc in Plant Biotechnology from Wageningen University and Research, and a PhD in Biotechnology from Addis Ababa University, carried out in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). He currently works as a researcher at SLU's Department of Plant Breeding, where his work centers on genomics-assisted breeding, QTL mapping, GWAS, genomic selection, RNA-seq, and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing applied to developing climate-resilient oilseed and cereal crops. Before this, he held senior research roles at Ethiopia's Bio and Emerging Technology Institute and the National Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center, and spent time lecturing in AgBio. His research has been supported by competitive grants from the Carl-Tryggers Foundation, Sida-SLU, and the Ethiopian Science Foundation. He has published in journals including Frontiers in Plant Science, Scientific Reports, and Agronomy. One thread runs through much of this work: his interest in micropropagating sweet potato cv. 'Kulfo', which he's followed since 2017 as part of a broader, sustained commitment to using biotechnology for food security and sustainable agriculture.
