Illicium verum Hook. F., also known as star anise, is one of the most important plants of the genus Anise in the family Magnoliaceae. I. verum not only has the functions of warming Yang, dispersing cold, regulating Qi and relieving pain but can also be used as a condiment to increase flavor as well as reconcile and remove fish smells. Currently, 201 chemical constituents have been identified from star anise; among these, star anise oil and shikimic acid are the two most widely used and studied chemical components in star anise, with the oil accounting for a large proportion of the total. This review integrates, classifies and updates studies related to the botany, pharmacology, phytochemistry, traditional and modern uses and quality control of star anise, with a special reference to its phytochemical composition and pharmacological activity. It will provide a reference for further research on this important medicinal plant. In addition, the broad applications and research profiles of star anise essential oil and shikimic acid are highlighted. Our review indicates that the research prospects regarding star anise are very broad and worthy of further investigation.

The genus Maytenus is a member of the Celastraceae family, of which several species have long been used in traditional medicine. Between 1976 and 2021, nearly 270 new compounds have been isolated and elucidated from the genus Maytenus. Among these, maytansine and its homologues are extremely rare in nature. Owing to its unique skeleton and remarkable bioactivities, maytansine has attracted many synthetic endeavors in order to construct its core structure. In this paper, the current status of the past 45 years of research on Maytenus, with respect to its chemical and biological activities are discussed. The chemical research includes its structural classification into triterpenoids, sesquiterpenes and alkaloids, along with several chemical synthesis methods of maytansine or maytansine fragments. The biological activity research includes activities, such as anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities, as well as HIV inhibition, which can provide a theoretical basis for the better development and utilization of the Maytenus.

Kudzu root (Puerariae lobatae Radix) is the tuberous root of Pueraria lobata, family Leguminosae. Kudzu root contains a variety of beneficial active ingredients such as puerarin, daidzin, daidzein, genistenin, 3′-hydroxy puerarin, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, arachidic acid, and so on. Modern medical research shows that active ingredients in kudzu root are widely used clinically as raw materials for the treatment of hyperglycemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, myocardial infarction, alcohol addiction, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and retinal blockage due to their various pharmacological effects such as improving cardiovascular circulation, lowering blood lipids, lowering blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, being antipyretic, being estrogen-like, and relieving alcohol. China has rich resources of kudzu root, and active ingredients are usually extracted before it is made into a preparation, so whether the extraction and separation process is reasonable will directly affect the ease of preparation and the efficacy of the treatment. This paper reviews the process methods for the extraction and separation of active ingredients in kudzu root and its common pharmacological activities. The aim is to provide some references for readers to compare the advantages and disadvantages of various extraction and separation methods as well as understand the active ingredients and pharmacological activities of kudzu root.

Objectives: Kajiichigoside F1 and rosamultin are natural triterpenoid saponins found in the root of Rosa laevigata Michx. These compounds are isomers, making their separation challenging. Nonetheless, they have been reported to exhibit significant anti-inflammatory activity, although their mechanism of action remains unclear. This study aimed to optimize the extraction process of echinacoside and rosamultin from R. laevigata and to elucidate the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of these saponins in an LPS-induced acute lung injury (ALI) model. Methods: The extraction process was optimized using a single-factor experiment and the Box–Behnken response surface methodology, with the content of kajiichigoside F1, rosamultin, and their total content serving as evaluation indices. The acute lung injury model was induced by LPS, and lung tissue damage was assessed through hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The secretion of relevant inflammatory factors was quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the expression levels of associated proteins were analyzed via Western blotting. Results: The optimal extraction conditions were determined to be an ethanol volume fraction of 80.0%, a solid–liquid ratio of 1:25, an extraction duration of 80 min, and three extraction cycles. Kajiichigoside F1 and rosamultin were found to mitigate alveolar inflammation in mice with acute lung injury (ALI) by effectively reducing the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6. Additionally, these compounds down-regulated the expression of phosphorylated NF-κB p65 and NF-κB IκBα proteins, thereby alleviating inflammatory symptoms. Conclusions: Kajiichigoside F1 and rosamultin attenuate the inflammatory response in acute lung injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation through modulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway. This study preliminarily elucidates their anti-inflammatory mechanism, suggesting that both compounds possess therapeutic potential for ALI. These findings provide significant guidance for the future development of active components derived from the root of R. laevigata and establish a foundation for enhancing the quality standards of its medicinal materials.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs), the primary bioactive components extracted from the traditional medicinal and edible plant Lycium barbarum L., have attracted extensive attention in biomedical research due to their superior anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and biological safety properties. Inflammation is a key pathological basis of various chronic metabolic and immune diseases, and LBPs can exert targeted regulatory effects on inflammatory responses through multiple molecular pathways. This article systematically reviews the latest advances in extraction technologies and structural characterization of LBPs, and illustrates their regulatory mechanisms against inflammation in different organs. Relevant toxicological studies are also summarized to confirm their low toxicity and safety. Additionally, it comprehensively concludes the current progress of LBPs in healthcare products, pharmaceutical development, and related patent innovations. Future perspectives highlight green efficient extraction, structural modification, targeted delivery, and in-depth mechanism exploration, aiming to provide a comprehensive theoretical basis for the further development and industrial application of LBPs.

Melia azedarach L. is a plant known for its traditional medicinal uses. Limonoids (triterpenes), which have a wide range of pharmacological effects, are the most critical active ingredients; however, their potential effects on liver cancer remain to be further explored. In this study, seven limonoids were isolated from the bark of Melia azedarach, including two new compounds, 11α-hydroxy-12-Oxo-Meliarachin I (1) and 29-Oxo-12-dehydroneoazedarachin D (3), along with five known compounds (2, 4–7), to evaluate their effect on liver cancer in vitro. The results showed that compounds 1–7 exhibited varying degrees of inhibitory effects on Hep3B cells. Among these, compound 6, Isotoosendanin (ITSN), displayed the most potent activity, with an IC50 value of 15.06 μg/mL. Mechanism studies have shown that ITSN inhibits cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis in Hep3B cells. It induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation to trigger oxidative stress injury, suppresses the activation of the MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways, further activates the p53 pathway to induce cell cycle arrest, and ultimately initiates the apoptotic cascade. ITSN can also inhibit tumor growth in immunodeficient mice receiving allogeneic transplantation. In summary, we systematically studied the limonoids in the bark of Melia azedarach and elucidated the anti-hepatocarcinoma activity of ITSN in vitro and in vivo, providing promising evidence for its potential use as a natural active ingredient in the prevention and treatment of cancer.
