Metasurfaces, with an outstanding capacity to manipulate optical properties, have opened up a new avenue for realizing ultra-compact image displays, as exemplified by near-field nanoprinting images and far-field holographic images. Integrating these two functionalities into a single metasurface can significantly enhance functionality and increase information capacity. However, current studies have faced limitations in simultaneously achieving multifunctionality, dynamic tunability, and effective linear and circular polarization channel decoupling with a simple structure, often resulting in severely constrained information capacity and functional application. In this paper, we propose a quad-channel metasurface for dynamic image display based on a single-size nanostructure, using the polarization decoupling properties of exceptional points (EPs), the degeneracy of Malus’ law, and the phase-transition characteristics of vanadium dioxide (VO2). In VO2’s insulating phase, Malus’ law degeneracy decouples non-orthogonal linear polarization channels, enabling dual-channel near-field nanoprinting. Upon transitioning to VO2’s metallic phase, polarization decoupling at EPs separates orthogonal circular polarization channels, enabling dual-channel far-field holography. As proof-of-concept, we simulated a single-sized nanostructure metasurface achieving simultaneous dual-channel near-field nanoprinting and far-field holographic display. This approach offers what we believe to be a novel paradigm for developing multifunctional metasurfaces, holding great promise for applications in information encryption and multichannel dynamic displays.

In this study, we investigate a physical mechanism to improve the light absorption efficiency of graphene monolayer from the universal value of 2.3% to about 30% in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range. The physical mechanism is based on the diffraction coupling of surface plasmon polariton resonances in the periodic array of metal nanoparticles. Through the physical mechanism, the electric fields on the surface of graphene monolayer are considerably enhanced. Therefore, the light absorption efficiency of graphene monolayer is greatly improved. To further confirm the physical mechanism, we use an interaction model of double oscillators to explain the positions of the absorption peaks for different array periods. Furthermore, we discuss in detail the emerging conditions of the diffraction coupling of surface plasmon polariton resonances. The results will be beneficial for the design of graphene-based photoelectric devices.

Polarization and wavelength multiplexed metalenses address the bulkiness of traditional imaging systems. However, despite progress with numerical simulations and parameter scanning, the engineering complexity of classical methods highlights the urgent need for efficient deep learning approaches. This paper introduces a deep learning-driven inverse design model for polarization-multiplexed metalenses, employing propagation phase theory alongside spectral transfer learning to address chromatic dispersion challenges. The model facilitates the rapid design of metalenses with off-axis and dual-focus capabilities within a single wavelength. Numerical simulations reveal a focal length deviation of less than 5% and an average focusing efficiency of 43.3%. The integration of spectral transfer learning streamlines the design process, enabling multifunctional metalenses with enhanced full-color imaging and displacement measurement, thus advancing the field of metasurfaces.

Recently, the non-Hermitian optical system draws much attention due to their peculiar optical properties. In this paper, a non-parity-time symmetric muti-layer metasurface is proposed. The polarization-dependent unidirectional reflectionless (UR) effect associated with the exceptional point (EP) is investigated. By adjusting the geometric parameters of the metasurface, the EP based UR phenomenon can be observed at 2360 nm, and the simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical work. Unlike other isotropic non-Hermitian platforms, the proposed UR phenomenon has a strong dependence on the incident polarization state, which guarantees its great application potential in the fields of near-field imaging and optical encryption, etc.

We report a novel method for enhancing magnetic plasmon resonances (MPRs) and sensing performance of metasurface consisting of a 1D Ag nanogroove array by using an opaque Ag mirror. The Ag mirror can block the transmission channel of light, so the radiative damping of MPRs excited in Ag nanogrooves is strongly reduced, and therefore the linewidth of MPRs is noticeably decreased. Because of ultra-narrow bandwidth and great magnetic field enhancement at MPRs, the metasurface shows very high sensitivity (S = 700 nm RIU−1, S* = 70 RIU−1) and figure of merit (FOM = 100, FOM* = 628), which holds great potential in the label-free biomedical sensing.

The independent control of phase channels of the Jones matrix via metasurfaces enables advanced applications in wavefront manipulation and optical encryption. Conventional methods for achieving this control under linear or circular polarization bases typically rely on multilayer metasurfaces or anisotropic chiral structures. Here, we propose a universal strategy for independent control of all four Jones matrix phase channels under linear polarization using a single-layer metasurface. By synergistically combining the beam splitting method with polarization-dependent interference effects, we reconstruct the Jones matrix under linear polarization bases to achieve independent modulation of phase channels. This design is realized with a relatively small number of variable-sized nanostructures and an optimized algorithm, notably requiring only two types of half-wave plates for full phase control. Simulation results demonstrate that the designed metasurface produces four distinct Fourier holograms in arbitrary linear polarization bases, and even under elliptical polarization. This work paves the way for applications in multidimensional polarization control, information encryption, and optical communications.
