The principal objective of this research project is the disposal of end-of-life tire rubber waste and its incorporation in gypsum composites. As a continuation of previous projects, which established a reduction in the mechanical properties of the resulting products, the behavior of these composites is analyzed with the incorporation of carbon fibers. The density, Shore C hardness, flexural strength, compressive strength, dynamic modulus of elasticity, strength–strain curves, toughness and resistance values and microstructure of the material are studied and compared. The results obtained show a significant increase in the mechanical tensile strength of all of the samples containing fibers. The moduli of elasticity results show a decrease in rigidity and increase in toughness and resistance of the material produced by incorporating the fibers. An optimum dosage of a water/gypsum ratio of 0.6 and incorporation of 1.5% carbon fibers is proposed. This lightweight material, which offers a high mechanical performance, features characteristics which are suitable for large prefabricated building elements in the form of panels or boards.

Nowadays, an increasing number of large cities, districts, and towns have tools for the Planning and Management of Green Infrastructures. All such tools seek a progression towards a future city model that is more resilient on an environmental, economic, and social level. To achieve this, emphasis is placed on the creation of a green infrastructure and, particularly, on improving urban biodiversity, urban forests, the value of natural areas in the urban environment, periurban agriculture, ecological connectivity, and accessibility. Moreover, the recent COVID19 health crisis has further highlighted that the city dweller’s relationship with the environment requires a reconciliation with nature and rural life that goes beyond typical compartmentalization. The objective must be to emphasize the need to establish creative processes which, through micro-scale activities (landscaping), generate the articulation of visible actions on a territorial scale (landscape planning) in both the natural environment (environmental landscape planning) and the urban environment (town planning based on the landscape). This article analyzes the issue of the large towns in south-west Madrid, where there is a dramatic divide on the border between the city landscape and the surrounding natural or agricultural landscape, and where there is an increasing need to establish landscapes with a certain uniqueness and to classify them as protected periurban areas, nature reserves, or land for which use and management is regulated. It is therefore important to develop environmental quality standards to assess Green Infrastructures as a whole: the administrative processes, their design, construction, maintenance, and resilience. This research focuses upon how this change in the planning and management of green periurban areas improves the multifunctionality of periurban spaces along with the intrinsic quality of the landscape, and promotes the city’s sustainability and resilience and improves governance. From the conclusions drawn, it should be noted that analysis, design, and action should be built on premises of sustainability and multifunctionality, and comply with the criteria for characterizing elements as green infrastructure. In the field of study, the characterization of the periurban area, and its subsequent assessment as a green infrastructure, provide the guidelines for action for devising an Open Space Strategy. This strategy constitutes a cross-disciplinary planning tool for local authorities when reading the landscape.

This article focuses upon the environmental conditioning of housing in warm and humid climates, and on obtaining thermal comfort conditions through predominantly passive means. The experimental analysis centers upon a representative example of the type of housing found in Havana (Cuba), a typical example of the warm-humid climate. Evolution of indoor temperatures for different natural ventilation and shading strategy scenarios are analyzed using dynamic simulation software. Comparing the indoor temperatures of the house, resulting from the simulation carried out, with the outdoors hour by hour and day to day provided by the model, the damping and amplitudes of the thermal wave are quantified in winter and summer conditions, depending on the different strategies adopted, and the thermal situations obtained in order to better housing habitability of the model are assessed.

In this paper, results about an experimental study performed on plaster compounds with the incorporation of rubber in the form of fibers from end of life tires are reported and analyzed. Test samples of plaster are prepared adding different volumetric fractions of rubber fibers that had been previously classified into two different sizes. The same consistency is fixed for every compound studied. Physical and mechanical properties are analyzed. Thermal behavior is also studied comparing thermal conductivity values and relating them with the bulk density of the resulting material. The results show an improvement in the thermal behavior proportional to the reduction of the density and the mechanical properties, as the proportion of rubber increases. It is also observed that there are no significant differences depending on the size of the fibers. These results confirm that the new material obtained is comparable to other materials of lightweight plaster with improved thermal properties and therefore with the same possibilities of use as these materials. The new material could be used for slabs and compression layers in building rehabilitation. Keywords: Plaster, rubber fibers, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, acoustic insulation.

The figure of the Health and Safety Coordinator (HSC), as a necessary and competent engineer in the construction sector, emerged in Spain on December 25, 1997 as a result of the implementation of European Directive 92/57/EEC. The coming of age of this figure is a sufficient period of time for determining its implementation and impact within the construction sector. The research carried out in this article arose from the analysis of statistical data obtained through Public Authorities and Professional Bodies. The quantitative study of the data extracted is complemented by the creation of specific benchmark indicators which connect four fundamental variables in the construction industry: the number of accidents, volume of workers employed, building units, and health and safety coordination posts. Furthermore, the legislation governing the HSC engineer in each of the 28 Member States of the European Union is studied. The results show a high implementation rate for the figure of the HSC, as well as a positive impact in relation to the reduced accident rate in the construction sector. Likewise, an update to the procedures of the various authorities is considered to be necessary in order to make the data concerning the actual work of the health and safety coordinators public. Finally, a review of the Spanish legislation concerning the HSC Coordinator is considered to be inevitable, in order to bring it up to the levels of professional skill and competence defined by the majority of European Union Member States.

AbstractFor the natural conditioning of a dwelling in warm-humid climate, factors such as thermal inertia, insulation, different building typologies and ventilation play an important role. In this context, there are different opinions on the functionalities of thermal inertia and isolation. This paper proposes to review these factors in a representative geographical location of warm-humid climate such as that of Havana (Cuba). Both the damping and the lag of the thermal wave are studied. The free evolution of the inner temperatures by means of computer simulation are also analyzed, in a dwelling of 60 m2 and traditional building system of the housing blocks in Havana. Likewise, the investigation focus on the effects of the insulation layer of the external enclosures in the natural conditioning of the house under the above mentioned conditions and its repercussion in comfort. Appropriate strategies for the environmental conditioning of houses are inferred.

AbstractDirective 2014/24 / EU on public procurement establishes in 2014 at European level the need to use electronic systems (means of communication and tools to model building data) in contracting procedures of building works, services and supplies. In Spain, the Ministry of Development has established through its BIM commission, that as of December 2018 and July 2019, both public buildings and infrastructures under public ownership respectively, are projected in accordance with the BIM methodology. Under this schedule it was essential for the Spanish University to respond by implementing new disciplines, or adapting the existing ones, to achieve skills and competencies for the proper training of future professionals, as it is demanded in other European universities. For this reason, the Department of Building Technology of the ETS Edificación (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), faced the difficulties of adapting existing disciplines and established a rigorous teacher training method, at an almost individual level. It was proposed a new optional subject that would allow interested students to get started on the BIM work methodology. This experience has been the only formal training established in the School of Building in the field of BIM. Once implemented, our first objective is clear: To study its level of implementation and to gauge the level of satisfaction among the students. In other words: To discuss the fulfillment of the purpose for which it was created, as well as to study different proposals regarding teaching intensification made by the students themselves. The results obtained are highly satisfactory and announce a very high demand by the students in order to intensify and incorporate BIM teaching as an essential tool for their studies and their professional development.

This study aims to study the tracing methods of the ribbed squinches. This typology usually appears to cover spaces of square plan by octagonal plan ribbed vaults, a very common typology in Gothic architecture (chapter houses, funerary chapels and domes, …). For this purpose, two representative cases have been analyzed, with a very similar tracing but different scale: the Chapter House at Valencia Cathedral and the Sala dei Baroni at Castel Nuovo in Naples. The ensuing results left no doubt as to the efficacy of the newly discovered tracing methods and the standardisation of their construction. These results are not only applicable in the renovation of objects of artistic interest but also to prevent any damage to the Cultural Heritage. Key words: Gothic architecture, tracing methods, ribbed squinch, renovation, Valencia Cathedral / Castel Nuovo.

This article expands upon the results of previous research into inerting fly ash from urban solid waste and its encapsulation in mortar matrices. Given the heterogeneous composition of the MSWIFA, it was decided to replicate the inerting process with NaHCO3 in order to prove its efficiency. The results are conclusive, reducing the chloride content by close to 99%. Mortars were produced using two different types of cement (CEM-I and CSA) and incorporating treated fly ash using a substitution percentage of 10% in weight of the aggregate used. The physical and mechanical properties have been obtained through workability, dimensional stability, density and mechanical strength tests. The conclusions drawn are that CSA mortars containing inerted fly ash and coarser aggregates (0/4) improve the reference compressive strengths by more than 11% while bending resistance remains unaltered. These types of mortar also have a reduced workability period and better dimensional stability than the reference mortars and those containing fine aggregates (0/2)
