Dendrites are important microstructures in single-crystal superalloys. The distribution of dendrites is closely related to the heat treatment process and mechanical properties of single-crystal superalloys. The primary dendrite arm spacing (PDAS) is an important length scale to describe the distribution of dendrites. In this work, the second-generation single crystal superalloy HT901 with a diameter of 15 mm was imaged under a metallurgical microscope. An automatic dendrite core identification and full-field quantitative statistical analysis method is proposed to automatically detect the dendrite core and calculate the local PDAS. The Faster R-CNN algorithm combined with test time augmentation (TTA) technology is used to automatically identify the dendrite cores. The local multi-directional algorithm combined with Voronoi tessellation is used to determine the local nearest neighbor dendrite and calculate the local PDAS and coordination number. The accuracy of using Faster R-CNN combined with TTA to detect the dendrite core of HT901 reaches 98.4%, which is 15.9% higher than using Faster R-CNN alone. The algorithm calculates the local PDAS of all dendrites in H901 and captures the Gaussian distribution of the local PDAS. The average PDAS determined by the Gaussian distribution is 415 μm, which is only a small difference from the average spacing λ¯ (420 μm) calculated by the traditional method. The technology analyzes the relationship between the local PDAS and the distance from the center of the sample. The local PDAS near the center of HT901 are larger than those near the edge. The results suggests that the method enables the rapid, accurate and quantitative dendritic distribution characterization.

Heat treatment is an important process for optimizing the microstructures of superalloys, and the cooling rate after solid solution treatment is one of the most critical parameters. In this work, we treated solid solution MAR-M247 alloys with water quenching, air cooling, and furnace cooling. Microstructure characterization, hardness, and room temperature tensile tests were conducted to investigate the effect of cooling rate on the microstructure and mechanical properties of MAR-M247 alloys. The results showed that the cooling rate after solid solution treatment mainly affected the precipitation behavior of the secondary γ′ phase, but it had few effects on other microstructure characterizations, including grain size, γ/γ′ eutectic, and MC carbide. The water-quenched sample had the highest cooling rate (400 °C/s) and hardness (400 HV) but suffered from premature fracture because of quenching cracks. A further decrease in cooling rate from 1.5 °C/s to 0.1 °C/s deteriorated hardness (384 HV to 364 HV) and yield strength (960 MPa to 771 MPa) but increased elongation (8.5% to 13.5%). Moreover, the deformation mechanism was transformed from dislocation shearing to Orowan bypassing. The decreased yield strength was mainly due to the weakened precipitation strengthening resulting from γ′-phase coarsening. The improved elongation was attributed to not only the higher work-hardening index caused by interface dislocation networks but also the more uniform deformation, which delayed necking.

The hot deformation behaviors of the SJTU-1 alloy, the high-throughput scanned casting Nickel-based superalloy, was investigated by compression test in the temperature range of 900 to 1200 °C and strain rate range of 0.1–0.001 s−1. The hot processing map has been constructed with the instability zone. At the beginning of hot deformation, the flow stress moves rapidly to the peak value with the increased strain rates. Meanwhile, the peak stress is decreased with the increased temperature at the same strain rates. However, the peak stress shows the same tendency with the strain rates at the same temperature. The optimum hot deformation condition was determined in the temperature range of 1000–1075 °C, and the strain rate range of 0.005–0.1 s−1. The microstructure investigation indicates the strain rate significantly affects the characteristics of the microstructure. The deformation constitutive equation has also been discussed as well.

Inclusions are important phases affecting material properties in complicated ways. In this paper, a quantitative study of the addition of HfO2 inclusions to DZ125 nickel-based superalloys was performed. Experimental results showed that the introduction of HfO2 inclusions caused a loss of strength and ductility. The carbide morphology also changed significantly from skeletal-shaped to block-shaped, resulting in a remarkable discrepancy in the fracture behavior under quasi-in-situ tensile testing. The SEM dynamic observations showed that cracks were initiated from the skeletal carbides and almost failed to propagate into the matrix. In contrast, the damage behavior of block-shaped carbides also involved internal cracking but with a tendency to form interconnected microcracks during propagation. A crystal plasticity finite element model (CPFEM) method was further developed to study the stress/strain behavior during the deformation process, considering the crystal orientations and microstructure morphologies from the EBSD data. Those elastoplastic parameters were determined through nanoindentation experiments. Simulation results verified that blocky carbides produced a pronounced strain concentration at the interface of the carbides and matrix, thereby increasing the tendency of crack formation. This paper provides a fundamental understanding of the role of inclusions in material recycling applications.

The size and shape effect (SSE) of components has become a critical issue for mechanical properties, application reliability, and processing. In this study, the creep rupture life (CRL) of components with different wall thicknesses and positions in a combustion chamber casing simulator made of K439B superalloy was investigated. The intrinsic mechanisms of the SSE were explored from the dendrite structure, volume fraction and size of the γ′ phase, and element segregation, etc. It is shown that this casting exhibits a strong SSE of creep rupture life, characterized by a significant difference in the CRL values up to 60% with the variation of wall thickness and position in the casing. In terms of casting technology, the influence of SSE on CRL is actually determined by the cooling rate. The SSE on the creep rupture life originates from the dendrite structure (such as the secondary dendrite arm spacing), volume fraction size of the γ′ phase in the dendrite trunk, and elements segregation rate. This work may have implications for the design and application of engineering components with large sizes and complex structures.
