Many parameters of fused deposition modeling (FDM) influence the resulting mechanical properties. This can become a key factor if those parts are intended for commercial applications. This study focuses on the influence of nozzle temperature and infill line orientations for parts made with short carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polylactic acid (PLA). Tests bars made of PLA and PLA-CF composite were produced under carefully selected conditions. As expected, PLA-CF yields higher tensile properties compared to PLA, owing to the strengthening effect of high modulus CFs. Maximum tensile properties are attained for a nozzle temperature of 230°C, for both PLA and PLA-CF. This temperature was thus selected for probing the effects of infill orientations in test bars. Among the multiple orientations tested, the combination [0°, 15°, −15°] relative to the long axis of the test bar yields the highest levels of tensile properties for both PLA and PLA-CF over the “all-purpose” [45°, 135°] orientation. Annealing can also affect crystallinity and mechanical properties of manufactured parts. Through differential scanning calorimetric analyses, the degree of crystallinity was assessed for samples annealed under various conditions. Results show that annealing increases crystallinity in PLA and PLA-CF samples, with a lower cooling rate yielding higher values. The Young’s modulus exhibits the same behavior for annealed and as printed parts, with a lower cooling rate yielding higher modulus values. This is attributed to a relaxation of the material structure as well as to the orientation of polymer chains toward the CFs.

In this work, a tetrafunctional epoxy resin entitled 2,3,4,5-tetraglycidyloxy pentanal (TGP) was tested and investigated as a potential corrosion inhibitor for mild steel (MS) in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The corrosion inhibition process for mild steel was employed alongside various techniques, such as potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), temperature effect (TE), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and theoretical approaches (DFT, MC, RDF and MD). Further, the corrosion efficacies obtained at the optimum concentration (10−3 M of the TGP) were 85.5% (EIS) and 88.6% (PDP), respectively. The PDP results indicated that the TGP tetrafunctional epoxy resin acted the same as an anodic inhibitor type in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. SEM and EDS analyses found that the protective layer formed on the MS electrode surface in the presence of TGP could prevent the attack of the sulfur ions. The DFT calculation provided more information regarding the reactivity, geometric properties and the active centers of the corrosion inhibitory efficiency of the tested epoxy resin. RDF, MC and MD simulations showed that the investigated inhibitory resin have a maximum inhibition efficiency in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution.

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology is increasingly applied in automotive, aerospace and medical applications. FFF is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing techniques to manufacture thermoplastics or their composites. FFF enables improvement in both cycle time and total cost of product development. Such improvements are achieved through the quick manufacture of functional prototypes enable real-world product development and testing. While the benefits of FFF are undeniable, its use in demanding applications is hindered by materials properties. The used commodity and standard polymers actually exhibit low to medium thermal and mechanical properties. To overcome this limitation, the aerospace industry looks for high-performance thermoplastics to obtain plastic parts strong enough to be used as a replacement for metal. Recent developments in FFF equipment now enable engineering polymers, such as Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and Polyether imide (PEI), to be utilized for parts with increased mechanical and thermal properties. Thus, this article reviews and discusses the properties and the printing parameters of PEEK and PEI produced by FFF.

Polymer membranes are central to the proper operation of several processes used in a wide range of applications. The production of these membranes relies on processes such as phase inversion, stretching, track etching, sintering, or electrospinning. A novel and competitive strategy in membrane production is the use of additive manufacturing that enables the easier manufacture of tailored membranes. To achieve the future development of better membranes, it is necessary to compare this novel production process to that of more conventional techniques, and clarify the advantages and disadvantages. This review article compares a conventional method of manufacturing polymer membranes to additive manufacturing. A review of 3D printed membranes is also done to give researchers a reference guide. Membranes from these two approaches were compared in terms of cost, materials, structures, properties, performance. and environmental impact. Results show that very few membrane materials are used as 3D-printed membranes. Such membranes showed acceptable performance, better structures, and less environmental impact compared with those of conventional membranes.

Poly(dodecano-12-lactam) (commercially known as polyamide “PA12”) is one of the most resourceful materials used in the selective laser sintering (SLS) process due to its chemical and physical properties. The present work examined the influence of two SLS parameters, namely, laser power and hatch orientation, on the tensile, structural, thermal, and morphological properties of the fabricated PA12 parts. The main objective was to evaluate the suitable laser power and hatching orientation with respect to obtaining better final properties. PA12 powders and SLS-printed parts were assessed through their particle size distributions, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and their tensile properties. The results showed that the significant impact of the laser power while hatching is almost unnoticeable when using a high laser power. A more significant condition of the mechanical properties is the uniformity of the powder bed temperature. Optimum factor levels were achieved at 95% laser power and parallel/perpendicular hatching. Parts produced with the optimized SLS parameters were then subjected to an annealing treatment to induce a relaxation of the residual stress and to enhance the crystallinity. The results showed that annealing the SLS parts at 170 °C for 6 h significantly improved the thermal, structural, and tensile properties of 3D-printed PA12 parts.
