We report a series of ferrocene-based derivatives and their corresponding oxidized forms in which the introduction of simple electron donating groups like methyl or tert-butyl units on cyclopentadienyl-rings afford great tunability of Fe+III/Fe+II redox potentials from +0.403 V down to −0.096 V versus saturated calomel electrode. The spin forbidden d–d transitions of ferrocene derivatives shift slightly toward the blue region with an increasing number of electron-donating groups on the cyclopentadienyl-rings with very little change in absorptivity values, whereas the ligand-to-metal transitions of the corresponding ferricinium salts move significantly to the near-IR region. The electron-donating groups also contribute in the strengthening of electron density of Fe+III d-orbitals, which therefore improves the chemical stability against the oxygen reaction. Further, density functional theory calculations show a reducing trend in outer shell reorganization energy with an increasing number of the electron donating units.

This review provides the fundamental theoretical tools for the development of a complete wave‐function formalism for the study of time‐evolution of chemico‐physical systems at finite temperature. The methodology is based on the non‐equilibrium thermo‐field dynamics (NE‐TFD) representation of quantum mechanics, which is alternative to the commonly used density matrix representation. TFD concepts are extended and integrated with the tensor‐train (TT) numerical tools leading to a novel and powerful theoretical and computational framework for the study of complex quantum dynamical problems. In addition, NE‐TFD techniques are extended to enable the study of dissipative open systems via a new formulation of the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) fully integrated with TT methodologies. We demonstrate that the combination of the TFD machinery with computational advantages of TTs results in a powerful theoretical and computational framework for scrutinizing dynamics of complex multidimensional electron‐vibrational systems. We illustrate the validity and the computational advantages of the developed methodologies by applying them to the study of quantum coherence effects in the energy‐transfer processes in antenna systems, to the analysis of fingerprints of vibrational modes in electron‐transfer and charge‐transfer processes in various model and realistic multidimensional molecular systems, as well as to simulation of other fundamental models of physical chemistry. This article is categorized under: Theoretical and Physical Chemistry > Reaction Dynamics and Kinetics Theoretical and Physical Chemistry > Statistical Mechanics

An efficient method to study the dynamics of radiationless transition in large molecular systems is proposed. It is based on the use of the whole set of normal coordinates of vibration and allows for taking properly into account both the displacements and the mix of the normal modes upon transition between two electronic states. The Hamiltonian matrix elements are written in terms of generalized Franck–Condon integrals and are analytically evaluated by recursion formulas. Applications to the S2→S1 internal conversion in pyrazine and to long-range electron transfer between quinones in photosynthetic reaction centers are given.

Most photovoltaic (PV) technologies are opaque to maximize visible light absorption. However, see-through solar cells open additional perspectives for PV integration. Looking beyond maximizing visible light harvesting, this work considers the human eye photopic response to optimize a selective near-infrared sensitizer based on a polymethine cyanine structure (VG20-Cx) to render dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fully transparent and colorless. This peculiarity was achieved by conferring to the dye the ability to strongly and sharply absorb beyond 800 nm (S0–S1 transition) while rejecting the upper S0–Sn contributions far in the blue where the human retina is poorly sensitive. When associated with an aggregation-free anatase TiO2 photoanode, the selective NIR-DSSC can display 3.1% power conversion efficiency, up to 76% average visible transmittance (AVT), a value approaching the 78% AVT value of a standard double glazing window while reaching a color rendering index (CRI) of 92.1%. The ultrafast and fast charge transfer processes are herein discussed, clarifying the different relaxation channels from the dye monomer excited states and highlighting the limiting steps to provide future directions to enhance the performances of this nonintrusive NIR-DSSC technology.

Quantum electron-vibrational dynamics in molecular systems at finite temperature is described using an approach based on the thermo field dynamics theory. This formulation treats temperature effects in the Hilbert space without introducing the Liouville space. A comparison with the theoretically equivalent density matrix formulation shows the key numerical advantages of the present approach. The solution of thermo field dynamics equations with a novel technique for the propagation of tensor trains (matrix product states) is discussed. Numerical applications to model spin-boson systems show that the present approach is a promising tool for the description of quantum dynamics of complex molecular systems at finite temperature.

The twin-formulation of quantum statistical mechanics is employed to describe a new methodology for the solution of the equations of motion of the reduced density matrix in their hierarchical formulation. It is shown that the introduction of tilde operators and of their algebra in the dual space greatly simplifies the application of numerical techniques for the propagation of the density matrix. The application of tensor-train representation of a vector to solve complex quantum dynamical problems within the framework of the twin-formulation is discussed. Next, applications of the hierarchical equations of motion to a dissipative polaron model are presented showing the validity and accuracy of the new approach.
