Zinc (Zn) deficiency is a major health concern in developing countries due to dependency on cereal based diet. Cereals are inherently low in Zn and inevitable use of stressed land has further elevated the problem. The aim of current research was to improve wheat and rice grains grain Zn concentration grown in saline soils through zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) due to their perspective high availability. The ZnO-NPs were prepared by co-precipitation method and characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Two separate pot experiments for wheat and rice were conducted to check the relative effectiveness of ZnO-NPs compared to other bulk Zn sources i.e., zinc sulphate heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O) and ZnO. Results showed that salt stress negatively impacted the tested parameters. There was a significant (p ≤ 0.05) improvement in growth, salt tolerance, plant Zn uptake and grain Zn concentrations by Zn application through Zn sources. The ZnO-NPs showed maximum improvement in crops parameters as compared to other sources due to their higher uptake and translocation in plants under both normal and stressed soil conditions. Thus, ZnO nanoparticles proved to be more effective for grain Zn fortification in both tested wheat and rice crops under normal and saline conditions.
Transdermal hydrogels have the potential to improve therapeutic outcomes via enhancing bioavailability and reducing toxicity associated with oral delivery. The goal of the present study was to formulate and optimise argan oil loaded transdermal hydrogel containing lipid nanoparticles. The high pressure homogenization (HPH) method was utilised to fabricate Simvastatin loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (SIM-SLNs) with precirol ATO 5 as a lipid core and Poloxamer 407 (P407) to stabilise the core. The optimised nanoformulation was characterised for its particle diameter, zeta potential, surface morphology, entrapment efficiency, crystallinity and molecular interaction. Furthermore, transdermal hydrogel was characterised for physical appearance, rheology, pH, bio adhesion, extrudability, spreadability and safety profile. In vitro and ex vivo assays were executed to gauge the potential of SLNs and argan oil for transdermal delivery. The mean particle size, zeta potential and polydispersity index (PDI) of the optimised nanoparticles were 205 nm, −16.6 mV and 0.127, respectively. Crystallinity studies and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis revealed no molecular interaction. The in vitro release model explains anomalous non-Fickian release of drug from matrix system. Ex vivo skin penetration studies conducted through a fluorescence microscope confirmed penetration of the formulation across the stratum corneum. Hydrogel plays a crucial role in controlling the burst release and imparting the effect of argan oil as hypolipidemic agent and permeation enhancer.
The current era of energy production from agricultural by-products comprises numerous criteria such as societal, economical, and environmental concerns, which is thought to be difficult, considering the complexities involved. Making the optimum choice among the various classes of organic waste substances with different physio-chemical characteristics based on their appropriateness for pyrolysis is made possible by a ranking system. By using a feasible model, which combines several attributes of decision-making processes, it is possible to select the ideal biomass feedstock from a small number of possibilities based on relevant traits that have an impact on the pyrolysis. In this study, a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique model based on the weight calculated from the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) tool has been applied to obtain a ranking of different types of agro-waste-derived biomass feedstock. The technique of order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is used to examine the possibilities of using/utilizing locally available biomass. From this point of view, multi-criteria are explained to obtain yield maximum energy. The suggested approaches are supported by the experimental findings and exhibit a good correlation with one another. Six biomass alternatives and eight evaluation criteria are included in this study. Sawdust is the highest-ranking agricultural waste product with a closeness coefficient score of 0.9 out of the six biomass components that were chosen, followed by apple bagasse with 0.8. The hybrid approach model that has been built can be evaluated and validated for the ranking method using the Euclidian distance-based approximation. This study offers a unique perspective on decision-making, particularly concerning thermo-chemical conversion.
Powder mixed electrical discharge machining (PM-EDM) is a technological advancement in electrical discharge machining (EDM) processes where fine powder is added to dielectric to improve the machining rate and surface quality. In this paper, machining of Nimonic-90 was carried out using fabricated PM-EDM, setup by adding silicon powder to kerosene oil. The influence of four input process parameters viz. powder concentration (PC), discharge current (IP), spark on duration (SON), and spark off duration (SOFF) has been investigated on surface roughness and recast layer thickness. L9 Taguchi orthogonal and grey relational analysis have been employed for experimental design and multi-response optimization, respectively. With the addition of silicon powder to kerosene oil, a significant decrease in surface roughness and recast layer thickness was noticed, as compared to pure kerosene. Spark on duration was the most significant parameter for both surface roughness and the recast layer thickness. The minimum surface roughness (3.107 µm) and the thinnest recast layer (14.926 μm) were obtained at optimum process parameters i.e., PC = 12 g/L, IP = 3 A, SON = 35 μs, and SOFF = 49 μs using grey relational analysis.
MPs' pollution was explored in Freshwater Swat riverine ecosystem sediment, surface water, and fish. Schizothorax plagiostomus is found to be extremely vulnerable to MP pollution. Human activities are the prime source of microplastics in SR.
Retinoids are considered the mainstay treatment for moderate to severe acne. Adapalene, a third-generation retinoid, has physiochemical properties which hinder the effective delivery of the drug to the skin. Therefore, the current study aimed to develop and evaluate adapalene liposomal loaded gel (ADA-LP gel) for the effective management of acne to improve tolerability and delivery to targeted sites as compared to the conventional dosage form of the drug. A novel spontaneous phase transition method (SPT) was used to formulate liposomes. Liposomal formulation (ADA-LP) was prepared and optimized based on particle size, zeta potential, and PDI. Optimized formulation was further characterized by different techniques and loaded into Carbopol gel. In vitro drug release, ex vivo permeation, and in vivo studies were performed using the prepared adapalene-loaded liposomal-based gel. The in vivo study was done employing the testosterone-induced acne model in mice. The optimized formulation had a size of 181 nm, PDI 0.145, and a zeta potential of −35 mV, indicating that the formulation was stable. Encapsulation efficiency was 89.69 ± 0.5%. ADA-LPs were loaded into the gel. Prepared ADA-LP showed a 79 ± 0.02% release of drug in a sustained manner, within 24 h. The ex vivo permeability study showed a total of 43 ± 0.06 µg/cm2 of drug able to permeate through the skin within 24 h. Moreover, only 28.27 ± 0.04% was retained on the epidermis. The developed ADA-LP gel showed significant improvement in the acne lesions in mice with no visible scars and inflammation on the skin. Therefore, ADA-LP-based gel could be a promising carrier system for the safe and effective delivery of Adapalene.
