The efficient sensing of amino acids, especially the distinction of their chiral enantiomers, is important for biological, chemical, and pharmaceutical research. In this work, a THz phase shift sensing method was performed for amino acid detection based on a polarization-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metasurface. More importantly, a method for binding the specific amino acids to the functional proteins modified on the metasurface was developed based on the isoelectric point theory so that the specific recognition for Arginine (Arg) was achieved among the four different amino acids. The results show that via high-Q phase shift, the detection precision for L-Arg is 2.5 × 10−5 g /ml, much higher than traditional sensing parameters. Due to the specific electrostatic adsorption by the functionalized metasurface to L-Arg, its detection sensitivity and precision are 22 times higher than the other amino acids. Furthermore, by comparing nonfunctionalized and functionalized metasurfaces, the D- and L-chiral enantiomers of Arg were distinguished due to their different binding abilities to the functionalized metasurface. Therefore, this EIT metasurface sensor and its specific binding method improve both detection precision and specificity in THz sensing for amino acids, and it will promote the development of THz highly sensitive detection of chiral enantiomers.

Multi‐resonant metasurfaces are of great significance in the applications of multi‐band nanophotonics. Here, we propose a novel metasurface design scheme for simultaneously supporting quasi‐bound states in continuum (QBIC) and other resonant modes, in which QBIC resonance is generated by mirror or rotational symmetry breaking in oligomers while other resonant modes can be simultaneously excited by rationally designing the shapes of meta‐atoms within oligomers. As an example, the simultaneous excitation of QBIC and anapole modes are demonstrated in a dimer metasurface composed of asymmetric dumbbell‐shaped apertures. Based on the far‐field multipole decomposition and near‐field electromagnetic field distributions, the origin mechanisms of QBIC and anapole mode are elucidated. The symmetry breaking of dumbbell‐shaped dimer results in QBIC. Within a certain asymmetric variation range, the contributions of toroidal dipole moment and electric dipole moment with approximately equal magnitudes remain dominant, which allows the anapole mode to always present. The effectiveness of the proposed design scheme is further confirmed by the experimental results identical with the evolutions of numerical simulation. In terahertz biosensing experiments, the anapole mode exhibits a higher sensitivity of 271.3 GHz (nmol/μl) −1 , whereas the QBIC can achieve a lower detection limit of 0.015 nmol/μl and expands the detection range by almost an order of magnitude. Our findings are beneficial to designing multi‐resonant metasurfaces with different resonance modes and promote the corresponding applications in the fields of biosensing, lasers, filtering, and nonlinearity.

Chirality plays an important role in biological processes, and enantiomers often possess similar physical properties and different physiological functions. Thus, chiral detection of enantiomers has become a hot topic in recent years, and methods to enhance chiral molecular recognition are in urgent demand. In this work, a polarization detection method was used for different chiral drugs based on a specially designed metasurface composed of asymmetric double-opened rings and the surface enhancement effect of gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The experiment results show that the frequency shifts caused by the nearfield interaction of the metasurface and biomolecules have been significantly improved by GNPs, and both the limit of detection and detection precision of the metasurface can reach the 10−5 g ml−1 level. Moreover, the polarization sensing characterized by right circular polarization (RCP), the polarization elliptical angle (PEA), and the polarization rotation angle (PRA) shows that the enantiomers of three drugs can be distinguished, especially using the PEA spectrum; the maximum difference between enantiomers is over 30° with a precision of 6.6 × 10−7 g mL−1. Our THz polarization sensing and the GNP enhancement method inspire an efficient strategy for the highly sensitive detection of enantiomers.

A terahertz (THz) all-dielectric metasurface with crescent cylinder arrays for chiral drug sensing has been demonstrated. Through the multipole expansion method, we theoretically found that breaking the symmetry of the metasurface can excite higher-order resonance modes and provide stronger anisotropy as well as enhanced sensitivity for the surroundings, which gives a better sensing performance than lower-order resonance. Based on the frequency shift and transmittance at higher-order resonance, we carried out the sensing experiments on (R)-(−)-ibuprofen and (S)-(+)-ibuprofen solution on the surface of this metasurface sensor. We were able to monitor the concentrations of ibuprofen solutions, and the maximum sensitivity reached 60.42 GHz/mg. Furthermore, we successfully distinguished different chiral molecules such as (R)-(−)-ibuprofen and (S)-(+)-ibuprofen in the 5 μL trace amount of samples. The maximum differentiation was 18.75 GHz/mg. Our analysis confirms the applicability of this crescent all-dielectric metasurface to enhanced sensing and detection of chiral molecules, which provides new paths for the identification of biomolecules in a trace amount.

Dynamic beam scanning with a dynamically tunable beam number, beam direction, and beam polarization remains a challenge in the terahertz gap, which is urgently needed for terahertz radar, next-generation wireless communication, and imaging applications. Different from programmable metasurfaces with element-level phase control, the beam direction is dynamically controlled by two cascaded all-dielectric metasurfaces during in-plane rotation. For a pair of circularly polarized beams with opposite handedness, the scanning field of view (FOV) can be the same or different according to the independent phase modulation in both layers and for both polarization states. Switchable single-beam and dual-beam scanning is achieved by controlling the incident polarization, which covers the ±60° FOV at 0.291 THz with an angular step of 1° and an average gain of 16.2 dBi. The output beam is quasi-circular polarized with an average ellipticity of 0.83. Single beam scanning along a Fibonacci spiral trajectory and dual beam scanning along symmetric and asymmetric trajectories are experimentally validated. Different beam scanning processes are recorded using a terahertz camera, which show good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The wide field-of-view continuous beam scanning with a switchable number of beams and a flexible FOV may have a significant impact on the development of terahertz radar and terahertz intelligent antennas.
