Disasters and crises are inevitable in this world. In the aftermath of a disaster, a society’s overall growth, resources, and economy are greatly affected as they cause damages from minor to huge proportions. Around the world, countries are interested in improving their emergency decision-making. The institutions are paying attention to collecting different types of data related to crisis information from various resources, including social media, to improve their emergency response. Previous efforts have focused on collecting, extracting, and classifying crisis data from text, audio, video, or files; however, the development of user-friendly multimodal disaster data dashboards to support human-to-system interactions during an emergency response has received little attention. Our paper seeks to fill this gap by proposing usable designs of interactive dashboards to present multimodal disaster information. For this purpose, we first investigated social media data and metadata for the required elicitation and analysis purposes. These requirements are then used to develop interactive multimodal dashboards to present complex disaster information in a usable manner. To validate our multimodal dashboard designs, we have conducted a heuristic evaluation. Experts have evaluated the interactive disaster dashboards using a customized set of heuristics. The overall assessment showed positive feedback from the evaluators. The proposed interactive multimodal dashboards complement the existing techniques of collecting textual, image, audio, and video emergency information and their classifications for usable presentation. The contribution will help the emergency response personnel in terms of useful information and observations for prompt responses to avoid significant damage.

Searching for a free parking space can lead to traffic congestion, increasing fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas pollution in urban areas. With an efficient parking infrastructure, the cities can reduce carbon emissions caused by additional fuel combustion, waiting time, and traffic congestion while looking for a free parking slot. A potential solution to mitigating parking search is the provision of parking-related data and prediction. Previously many external data sources have been considered in prediction models; however, the underlying impact of contextual data points and prediction has not received due attention. In this work, we integrated parking occupancy, pedestrian, weather, and traffic data to analyze the impact of external factors on on-street parking prediction. A comparative analysis of well-known Machine (ML) Learning and Deep Learning (DL) techniques, including Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Random Forest (RF), Decision Trees (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Gradient Boosting (GA), Adaptive Boosting (AB), and linear SVC for the prediction of OnStreet parking space availability has been conducted. The results show that RF outperformed other techniques evaluated with an average accuracy of 81% and an AUC of 0.18. The comparative analysis shows that less complex algorithms like RF, DT, and KNN outperform complex algorithms like MLP in terms of prediction accuracy. All four data sources have positively impacted the prediction, and the proposed solution can determine the best possible parking slot based on weather conditions, traffic flow, and pedestrian volume. The experiments on live prediction showed an ingest rate of 0.1 and throughput of 0.3 events per second, demonstrating a fast and reliable prediction approach for available slots within a 5–10 min time frame. The study is scalable for larger time frames and faster predictions that can be implemented for IoT-based big data-driven environments for on-street and off-street parking.

In several developing countries, maternal and child health indicators trail behind the international targets set by the UN as Millennium or Sustainable Development Goals. One of the reasons is poor and nonstandardized maternal health record keeping that affects data quality. Effective decision making to improve public healthcare depends essentially on the availability of reliable data. Therefore, the aim of this research is the design and development of the standard compliant data access model for maintaining maternal and child health data to enable the effective exchange of healthcare data. The proposed model is very granular and comprehensive in contrast with existing systems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model, a web application was implemented and was reviewed by healthcare providers and expectant mothers. User feedback highlights the usefulness of the proposed approach as compared to traditional record-keeping techniques. It is anticipated that the proposed model will lay a foundation for a comprehensive maternal and child healthcare information system. This shall enable trend analysis for policy making to help accelerate the efforts for meeting global maternal and child health targets.

The mobile and wearable nature of smartwatches poses challenges in evaluating their usability. This paper presents a study employing customized heuristic evaluation and use of the system usability scale (SUS) on four smartwatches, along with their mobile applications. A total of 11 heuristics were developed and validated by experts by combining Nielsen’s heuristic and Motti and Caines’ heuristics. In this study, 20 participants used the watches and participated in the SUS survey. A total of 307 usability issues were reported by the evaluators. The results of this study show that the Galaxy Watch 5 scored highest in terms of efficiency, ease of use, features, and battery life compared to the other three smartwatches and has fewer usability issues. The results indicate that ease of use, features, and flexibility are important usability attributes for future smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 5 received the highest SUS score of 87.375. Both evaluation methods showed no significant differences in results, and customized heuristics were found to be useful for smartwatch evaluation.

Social media has become common as a means to convey opinions and express the extent of satisfaction and dissatisfaction with a service or product. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia specifically, most social media users share positive and negative opinions about a service or product, especially regarding communication services, which is one of the most important services for citizens who use it to communicate with the world. This research aimed to analyse and measure user satisfaction with the services provided by the Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Mobily, and Zain. This type of sentiment analysis is an important measure and is used to make important business decisions to succeed in increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction. In this study, the authors developed advanced methods based on deep learning (DL) to analyse and reveal the percentage of customer satisfaction using the publicly available dataset AraCust. Several DL models have been utilised in this study, including long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU), and BiLSTM, on the AraCust dataset. The LSTM model achieved the highest performance in text classification, demonstrating a 98.04% training accuracy and a 97.03% test score. The study addressed the biggest challenge that telecommunications companies face: that the company’s services influence customers’ decisions due to their dissatisfaction with the provided services.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a frequently used system among organizations to automate their workflows, and companies’ performances are highly dependent on the ERP system. The usability issues of ERP systems may cause performance degradation, resulting in the company’s loss in terms of cost. Previously, several studies reported many usability problems of ERP systems. It can be helpful for the developers and designers of ERP systems to use design recommendations as a quick reference to avoid recurrent usability problems of ERP systems. Currently, this area lacks effective consolidation of the previously reported usability problems data. This paper presents a unique approach to developing a precise checklist of ERP usability problems using the topic modeling technique. Our analysis found six different usability problem-related topics that can be generalized for various ERP systems. We have successfully validated our checklist in three different usability studies of ERP systems. The most found usability problems are “difficulty searching and finding desired item/information in interface and error handling” and “missing data and information”. The outcome of our paper is the provision of recommendations to avoid the usability problems of ERP systems and help organizations efficiently prevent frequent issues during the development and maintenance of ERP systems.
