Prof. Hein W.J.P. Neomagus obtained his PhD in the field of Chemical Engineering (membrane reactors) at the University of Twente (The Netherlands) in 1999. During the last 20 years, Professor Neomagus's research interests have been focused on chemical engineering disciplines. Hein was appointed as an associate professor in 2002 and immediately played an important role in the initiation and continuation of longstanding industrial relations with Eskom and Sasol (both > 15 years). In 2010, he was appointed as a full professor at the North-West University, after achieving the NRF rating as a C2 professor in 2008 (extended in 2013 and 2018). He was appointed as EPPEI co-chair holder from the inception (2012) up till 2017 and is still active in this group as a researcher. Also about Sasol and NWU, Hein coordinated the Hub and Spoke Initiative for 2 cycles of 5 years. Thereafter, he is also involved in the Sasol Inter-University Cooperation Program, where he is involved in 4 studies. Further, he initiated industrial research programs with EVRAZ, Africary, and Tronox, and started and coordinated a program on coal testing with the Department of Health of the North West province. Since 2020, Hein has acted as director of the Centre of Excellence in Carbon-Based Fuels.
