Biosolids’ use in agriculture is an example of industrial symbiosis. The application of biosolids (BS) in agriculture is considered one of the most sustainable sewage sludge (SS) management options, but the quality of biosolids has to meet certain requirements regarding the characteristics of the sludge, those of the land and of the type of crop. Web of Science database has been used to search for the relevant literature. The review of studies undertaken in order to determine the economic effects of the use of biosolids in agriculture shows, in the majority, an increase in crop yield and the reduction in costs, due to the reduction in the requirements for the application of chemical or synthetic fertilizers. If the entire sewage sludge production in Romania for 2019 had been used as fertilizer, the estimated cost reduction for farmers would have been almost 3 million Euros—considering the 230.59 thousand tons of dry matter produced in 2019. The estimated savings for 2019 of the sewage and water utilities, if the sewage sludge had been used in agriculture instead of depositing it at the landfill, would have been about 3.9 million Euros. However, the limits of the symbiosis are due to the size of the farms, the type of plants cultivated, pH, slope inclination, heavy metal content and social acceptance. It is impossible to use all the sewage sludge in agriculture, but these figures are a good estimation of the economic effects.

The water sector is facing a convergence of systemic challenges generated by climate change, increasing demand, and increasingly stringent regulations, which threaten its operational and strategic sustainability. In this context, the article examines how ESG (environmental, social, governance) principles are integrated into the governance, financing, and management of water resources, with a comparative focus on Romania and the European Union. It aims to assess the extent to which ESG practices contribute to the sustainable transformation of the water sector in the face of growing environmental and socio-economic challenges. The methodology is based on a systematic analysis of policy documents, regulatory frameworks, and ESG standards applicable to the water sector at both national (Romania) and EU levels. This study also investigates investment strategies and their alignment with the EU Taxonomy for Sustainable Activities, enabling a comparative perspective on implementation, gaps and strengths. Findings reveal that while ESG principles are increasingly recognized across Europe, their implementation remains uneven (particularly in Romania) due to unclear standards, limited funding mechanisms, and fragmented policy coordination. ESG integration shows clear potential to foster innovation, improve governance transparency, and support long-term resilience in the water sector. These results underline the need for coherent, integrated policies and stronger institutional coordination to ensure consistent ESG adoption across Member States. Policymakers should prioritize the development of clear guidelines and supportive funding instruments to accelerate sustainable outcomes. The originality of our study lies in its comparative approach, offering an in-depth analysis of ESG integration in the water sector across different governance contexts. It provides valuable insights for advancing policy coherence, investment alignment, and sustainable water resource management at both national and European levels.

This study explores public perceptions, involvement, and barriers to energy communities in Romania, a country where decentralized renewable energy initiatives are still in their infancy. Data were collected through a nationwide online survey based on a quantitative research design, involving 118 respondents from all four macro-regions in Romania. The survey assessed awareness of the concept of energy communities, perceived benefits, technological and regulatory challenges, and willingness to participate or invest. The results show that the perception of energy communities is generally positive, with solar and environmental benefits being the most important. However, significant barriers remain, particularly in terms of financing, institutional support, and regulatory complexity. Urban, involved, and female respondents consistently rated benefits higher and identified more barriers than rural, non-participants and male respondents. Statistical differences between groups were confirmed using the Mann–Whitney U-test. These results highlight the importance of targeted communication, improved policy frameworks, and educational initiatives to ensure broader public involvement and inclusive development of renewable energy systems in Romania.

Hydropower plants remain strategic assets for grid stability and decarbonization, with hydraulic turbines governing conversion efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance. This systematic review synthesizes recent methodologies for evaluating and optimizing turbine operation and maintenance to enhance efficiency, reduce impacts, and extend service life. Following a PRISMA-aligned protocol, studies published between 2020 and 2025 were screened across Web of Science and Scopus, using predefined eligibility criteria and a two-stage selection process. The resulting evidence was thematically analyzed across three domains: lifecycle and circular-economy-oriented refurbishment strategies; digitalization and predictive maintenance approaches; and environmentally optimized operating regimes. Of the 115 screened records, 37 met the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate that predictive monitoring, data-driven maintenance, and turbine selection tailored to local hydrology can significantly improve energy performance while reducing operation and maintenance costs. The literature also highlights the importance of ecological flow compliance and reduced aquatic impacts. Complementary case studies from Nepal, Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, and Romania illustrate regional challenges and modernization pathways. Overall, the review underscores the need for integrated, multi-objective turbine management that aligns techno-economic, lifecycle, and ecological considerations to support hydropower competitiveness within the energy transition.

Improper handling of WEEE causes severe environmental pollution and adverse human health effects. This study investigates global environmental legislation and the proposal of innovative solutions to minimize the quantities of waste electronic and electrical equipment and highlight the illegal shipments of waste electronic and electrical equipment to developing countries. Policy formulation and implementation are often an integral part of the strategic framework that helps countries cope with domestic problems. It provides a systematic approach to addressing problems in a legally and nationally coherent manner. Only a third of this waste electronic and electrical equipment is currently subject to WEEE legislation, an important step in the elimination of WEEE. National laws on electronic waste are designed to address country-specific issues. In most cases, the law is not holistic and raises different administrative issues. Thus, a general law should be implemented with regard to waste electronic and electrical equipment, and it is also necessary to make regular changes to address the deficiencies identified by regular systematic reviews.

Globally, a major shift is taking place to ensure sustainable development in the reuse and reduction of wood waste. The aim of this paper is to present a series of circularity practices on the recycling stage of wood waste from industrial processes. The environmental impact due to improper storage of wood waste mainly from the construction and related industries, demolition and renovation is global warming; due to greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation for the production of processed wood for this industry. Thus, the focus is on the low recovery rate of wood from the disposal phase. This review was drawn from a total of 94 articles that we analyzed from a database of selected keywords "circular economy", "recycling", "wood".
