We present the ionospheric disturbance responses over low-latitude regions by using total electron content from Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), ionosonde data and Swarm satellite data, during the geomagnetic storm in August 2018. The results show that a prominent total electron content (TEC) enhancement over low-latitude regions is observed during the main phase of the storm. There is a persistent TEC increase lasting for about 1–2 days and a moderately positive disturbance response during the recovery phase on 27–28 August, which distinguishes from the general performance of ionospheric TEC in the previous storms. We also find that this phenomenon is a unique local-area disturbance of the ionosphere during the recovery phase of the storm. The enhanced foF2 and hmF2 of the ionospheric F2 layer is observed by SANYA and LEARMONTH ionosonde stations during the recovery phase. The electron density from Swarm satellites shows a strong equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crest over the low-latitude area during the main phase of storm, which is simultaneous with the uplift of the ionospheric F2 layer from the SANYA ionosonde. Meanwhile, the thermosphere O/N2 ratio shows a local increase on 27–28 August over low-latitude regions. From the above results, this study suggests that the uplift of F layer height and the enhanced O/N2 ratio are possibly main factors causing the local-area positive disturbance responses during the recovery phase of the storm in August 2018.

Ionospheric total electron content (TEC) is important data for ionospheric morphology, and also an important parameter for ionospheric correction in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) precise positioning, navigation, and radio science. In this study, we present a data assimilation model for regional ionosphere based on a local ensemble Kalman filter (LEnKF) with the International Reference Ionosphere 2016 (IRI-2016) model as the background, to assimilate ionospheric TEC observations from GNSS. To demonstrate the results, the TEC estimates from the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China (CMONOC), which is about 260 stations in China, are applied as observation. The assessments are performed against the TEC estimates from BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) geostationary earth orbit (GEO) and against the final products from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). The assimilation results are in good agreement with BDS GEO TEC and the CODE TEC on a quiet or disturbed day. The correlation coefficient after assimilation is increased by about 17% compared with that before assimilation, and the RMSE after assimilation is decreased by about 42% compared with that before assimilation. Furthermore, the assimilated method is also evaluated in the single-frequency precise point positioning (PPP). The experimental results indicate that the PPP/Assimilated method can improve the GNSS positioning accuracy more effectively in comparison to the PPP/CODE. These results reveal that the LEnKF method can be considered as a useful tool for ionospheric assimilation.

The International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) is an empirical model widely used to describe ionospheric characteristics. In the previous research, high-precision total ionospheric electron content (TEC) data derived from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data were used to adjust the ionospheric global index IG12 used as a driving parameter in the standard IRI model; thus, the errors between IRI-TEC and GNSS-TEC were minimized, and IRI-TEC was calibrated by modifying IRI with the updated IG12 index (IG-up). This paper investigates various interpolation strategies for IG-up values calculated from GNSS reference stations and the calibrated TEC accuracy achieved using the modified IRI-2016 model with the interpolated IG-up values as driving parameters. Experimental results from 2015 and 2019 show that interpolating IG-up with a 2.5° × 5° spatial grid and a 1-h time resolution drives IRI-2016 to generate ionospheric TEC values consistent with GNSS-TEC. For 2015 and 2019, the mean absolute error (MAE) of the modified IRI-TEC is improved by 78.57% and 77.42%, respectively, and the root mean square error (RMSE) is improved by 78.79% and 77.14%, respectively. The corresponding correlations of the linear regression between GNSS-TEC and the modified IRI-TEC are 0.986 and 0.966, more than 0.2 higher than with the standard IRI-TEC.

The ionospheric mapping function (MF) for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), a mutual projection method for the slant total electron content (STEC) and vertical total electron content, is one of the significant factors affecting the performance of ionospheric models. The commonly used MF assumes isotropic TEC variations and takes into account only the satellite elevation angle, which may result in significant ionospheric projection errors, especially at low elevation angles. Based on the single-layer model, we propose an additional azimuth parameter mapping function (APMF). The APMF was estimated and evaluated by the NeQuick model during the periods of January 2014 and January 2022 from the aspect of simulation and measured STEC during the periods of 2014 and 2022 from the aspect of actual measurements over China, respectively. Compared to the modified single-layer model mapping function (MSLM-MF), the experimental results indicate that (1) The APMF can significantly reduce the ionospheric projection error, and the fluctuation in errors with different azimuth angles is small. (2) According to the evaluation based on the NeQuick simulation during the TEC peak time, when the ionosphere is quite active, the upper and lower quartiles of the absolute projection error boxplot of the APMF relative to the MSLM-MF in January 2014 are reduced by 56.1% and 60.0%, respectively, and in January 2022, they are reduced by 67.7% and 65.2%, respectively. Similarly, the upper whiskers in the boxplot are reduced by 54.7% and 67.5% in January 2014 and January 2022, respectively; the APMF performance in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE) is improved by 47.0% in January 2014 and 58.3% in January 2022. (3) According to the evaluation based on the measured STEC from GNSS raw data during the TEC peak time, the upper and lower quartiles of the absolute mapping error boxplot of the APMF relative to the MSLM-MF in 2014 are reduced by 48.9% and 46.9%, respectively, while in 2022, they are reduced by 48.3% and 41.2%, respectively. The upper whiskers in the boxplot are reduced by 41.8% and 35.2% in 2014 and 2022, respectively; the APMF performance in terms of RMSE is improved by 44.6% in 2014 and 39.2% in 2022.

To generate high-quality reconstructions of ionospheric electron density (IED), we propose an extended simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (ESART). The ESART method distributes the discrepancy between the actual GNSS TEC and the calculated TEC among the ray–voxels based on the contribution of voxels to GNSS TEC, rather than the ratio of the length of ray–voxel intersection to the sum of the lengths of all ray–voxel intersections, as is adopted by conventional methods. The feasibility of the ESART method for reconstructing the IED under different levels of geomagnetic activities is addressed. Additionally, a preliminary experiment is performed using the reconstructed IED profiles and comparing them with ionosonde measurements, which provide direct observations of electron density. The root mean square errors (RMSE) and absolute errors of the ESART method, the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) method, and the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) 2016 model are calculated to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared to the conventional SART method of ionospheric tomography and the IRI-2016 model, the reconstructed IED profiles obtained using the ESART method are in better agreement with the electron density obtained from the ionosondes, especially for the peak electron densities (NmF2). In addition, a case study of an intense geomagnetic storm on 17–19 March 2015 shows that the spatial and temporal features of storm-related ionospheric disturbances can be more clearly depicted using the ESART method than with the SART method.
