In this paper, the dimensional synthesis of the four-bar mechanism for path generation is formulated using the relative angle motion analysis and the link geometry parameterization with Cartesian coordinates. The Optimum Dimensional Synthesis using Relative Angles and the Cartesian space link Parameterization (ODSRA+CP) is stated as an optimization problem, and the solution is given by the differential evolution variant DE/best/1/bin. This study investigates the behavior and performance of such formulation and performs a comparative empirical study with the well-known synthesis method based on vector-loop equation motion analysis where different modifications in the metaheuristic algorithms are established in the literature to improve the obtained solution. Five study cases of dimensional synthesis for path generation with and without prescribed timing are solved and analyzed. The empirical results show that the way of stating the optimization problem in the ODSRA+CP significantly improves the search process for finding promising solutions in the optimizer without requiring algorithm modifications. Therefore, it is confirmed that the optimizer search process in the optimal synthesis of mechanisms is not the only way of improving the obtained solutions, but also the optimization problem formulation has a significant influence on the search for better solutions.

The purpose of this work is to obtain a simple optimal linear model of a single pneumatic cylinder, which is controlled by two on/off solenoid valves. Here it is proposed an strategy to find a relation between the driving times to handle the on/off valves and a single continuous control input. This relation represents an open loop control that generates a system with linear input/output response, with maximum speed response, and with zero deadband. So, this relation improves the results of the pulsing scheme given previously by van Varseveld and Bone (1997).
This work presents the development of semiactive knee orthosis prototype that focus to absorb the forces and impacts in this joint during the human gait. This prototype consists of three subsystems: the first is a wireless and portable system capable of measuring the ground reaction forces in the stance phase of the gait cycle, by means of an instrumented insole with force sensing resistors strategically placed on the sole of the foot, an electronic device allows processing and transmit this information via Bluetooth to the control system. The second is a semiactive actuator, which has inside a magnetorheological fluid, highlighting its ability to modify its damping force depending on the intensity of the magnetic field that circulates through the MR fluid. It is regulated by a Proportional Derivative (PD) controller system according to the values of plantar pressure measured by the insole. The third component is a mechanical structure manufactured by 3D printing, which adapts to the morphology of the human leg. This exoskeleton is designed to support the forces on the knee controlling the action of the magnetorheological actuator by ground reaction forces. The purpose of this assistance system is to reduce the forces applied to the knee during the gait cycle, providing support and stability to this joint. The obtained experimental results indicate that the device fulfills the function by reducing 12 % of the impact forces on the user's knee.
This work deals with the modeling and control of a magnetic levitation system. A nonlinear model, valid for a certain region of interest, is obtained by considering the compensation of the gravity force. A control strategy is designed for the system based on the concept of passivity, in particular by establishing the equivalence of the levitation system to a passive one and considering a position regulation strategy. Real time experiments were carried out to show the performance of the proposed control scheme.
The ankle rehabilitation in certain injuries requires passive movements to aid in the prompt recovery of ankle movement. In the last years, parallel ankle rehabilitation robots with multiple degrees of freedom have been the most studied for providing such movements in a controlled way. Nevertheless, the high cost does not make it viable for home healthcare. Then, this paper presents an optimization approach where a spherical mechanism of one-degree-of-freedom is proposed as a low-cost ankle rehabilitation device to provide the passive rehabilitation exercise for plantar flexion/dorsiflexion and adduction/abduction ankle movements. The approach is formulated as a mono-objective constraint optimization problem where the relative motion angle of the mechanism, the Grashof criterion, the force transmission, and the rehabilitation routine are included. The link lengths of the mechanism parameterized in Cartesian coordinates are found by the two most representative differential evolution variants. The statistical analysis of optimizers indicates that the DE/rand/1/bin finds, on average, more promising solutions through algorithm executions than the DE/best/1/bin . The numerical simulation results and the motion simulation of the CAD model illustrate the obtained ankle rehabilitation mechanism, indicating that the percentage error between the desired rehabilitation path and the curve generated by the coupler point of the mechanism is in the interval [0.036,0.437]%. Manufacturing the ankle rehabilitation mechanism with a 3D printer validates the optimization approach and verifies the resulting mechanism.
