Research problem/aim: Turkey has a strategic importance in honey production. National or regional data on the consumption of honey, an important part of which is exported in our country and subject to new research every day, is not sufficient. This research was planned and conducted in order to determine honey consumption amounts, consumption preferences and purchasing behaviors of student of university at Kayseri.Method: Research was conducted between February and September 2015 at two different universities, one foundation university and one state university, in Kayseri with the largest student potential. The study was completed with a total of 2178 students in line with the opinion of a Statistics Expert. The data were collected by the researchers using questionnaires. SPSS package program was used to evaluate the obtained data.Findings: Mean age of the students was 22.3±3.17. Only 12.5% of the participants were consuming honey daily. 12.1% of the participants were not consuming honey at all, whereas 47.9% consumed honey rarely. Monthly honey consumption of 78.9% for men and 83.8% for females was less than 500g per month , while the amount of honey consumed at one time was generally (40.6%) a meal spoon(16 g). Among university students, the most important contributing factor for consuming honey was being nutritious (54.8%). The most preferred type of honey was filtered and honeycomb, while flower and pine honey were the most preferred varieties (56.6%, 28.9%, 72.2% and 23.7%, respectively). When purchasing honey, students paid attention to the consistency, brand and production dates (20.5%, 19.7%, 25.5% respectively), whereas appearance and price were not significant (4.7%, 7.8%). As the monthly allowance of students increases monthly honey consumption also increases. Conclusions: Increasing scientific studies on honey production and consumption will facilitate the promotion of honey products specific to Turkey both domestically and internationally. Increasing the awareness of university students on healthy nutrition and sugar consumption is highly important.Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file.ÖzetAmaç: Ülkemiz bal üretiminde stratejik bir öneme sahiptir.

Objective: The primary purpose of the current study was to establish Turkish smoothed centile charts and Lambda, Mu, Sigma (LMS) tables for four-site skinfold thickness based on a population-based sample, and secondary purpose was to elaborate a reference for the percentage of body fat.Design: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted between January and May 2017. Triceps, biceps and subscapular, suprailiac skinfold thicknesses were measured using Holtain skinfold caliper. Age- and gender-specific percentile values were determined with the LMS method, and body fat percentage was calculated using the Westrate and Deurenberg equation.Setting: Afyonkarahisar province in Turkey.Participants: The current study was conducted on 4565, 6–18-year-old students. Results: The triceps, biceps and subscapular skinfolds of the girls were higher than the boys. From the age of seven, the sum of four skinfold thicknesses of the girls was more than those of the boys. This difference became more evident after the age of 12. Although fat percentages of girls showed a fluctuating change, it decreased with the age in boys. Westrate and Deurenberg equation fat percentages of girls until adolescence were lower than boys, but increased after 12 years of age and exceeded that of boys. Conclusions: The current study has provided sex- and age-specific reference values for skinfold thickness and has shown that obesity in girls is higher than in boys in schoolchildren in Afyonkarahisar. The current study has also shown that skinfold thickness measurements are a valuable tool for screening obesity in children.

Background and Study Aim: Among products used as ergogenic substances by sportsmen, royal jelly and honey have attracted attention in recent years. This study was carried out to determine the effect of royal-jelly and honey mixture on weight lifting performances and some hormone test of athletes. Material and Methods: Randomly selected healthy 29 athletes, aged between 20 and 25 years, were divided into two groups. Placebo (corn starch) was given to the Control Group and 5 grams of royal jelly + 45 grams of honey mixture was given to the experimental group for eight weeks. After one week of weight adjustment workout; maximum weight (bench press, shoulder press, squat, deadlift and arm curl movements) that each athlete can lift was determined and hormones (Free T4, Free T3, Cortisol, Insulin, Total Testosterone and ACHT, TSH, Growth Hormone, Prolocatin, FSH, LH) were examined at pro-exercise, after four weeks of exercise, and after eight weeks of exercise. Results: As a result of the study, a statistical increase in the weights lifted in the bench press, squat, arm curl, deadlifts and shoulder press movements in the second and third measurements with respect to the first measurement was determined within both groups (p 0.05), but there was significant difference in free T4 value in 2. measurements of groups (p = 0.030) and between the 2. and 3. measurements in the test group in the variable of insulin hormone (p <0.001). Conclusions: In conclusion, it is thought that in young males performing maximal strength workout, royal jelly + honey supplement does not affect the increase in weight lifted, this increase is due to the weight training applied, but it causes some hormone changes.

Honeybee products have recently begun to attract attention with their effects on athlete performance. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of honeybee products’ mixtures on the performance and some blood biochemical parameters of young trained gymnasts. Twenty-four young gymnasts aged between 6 and 12 years were observed for 4 weeks as they continued their usual daily training schedules. The gymnasts were divided into three groups. Group 1 was administered a mixture of honey and bee pollen at a dose of 50 g/day, whereas Group 2 was provided with a mixture of honey, bee pollen, royal jelly and propolis. Group 3 served as the control group and was administered a placebo of wheat starch at a dose of 50g/day. In the beginning and at the end of the study, performance parameters and biochemical parameters of young gymnasts were determined. After treatment, grip force and muscular strength measurements increased in Group 2 (p<0.05). The muscular endurance tests in the two honeybee product mixtures treatment groups showed improvement after supplementation (p<0.05). The improvement noted in the power test in Group 1 was significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between treatment and placebo groups in all investigated biochemical parameters except total protein, which was lower in placebo group. Although bee products supplements were administered only for a short period of time, the gymnasts showed higher performance in some investigated parameters. It is recommended to conduct further long-term studies using bee products.

Background: Weight locus of control (WLOC), which reflects individuals’ beliefs about weight control, may be an important determinant of eating behaviors and body composition. This study aims to examine the relationship between WLOC, eating behaviors, and anthropometric measurements in menopausal women. Methods: The sample for this cross-sectional correlational study consists of 300 menopausal women aged 45–55 living in Alanya. Study data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire. The questionnaire included general information and anthropometric measurements, the Turkish version of the Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale, and the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire. Results: Of the participants, mean body mass index 25.8 ± 6.2 kg/m², and 67.7% had a body fat percentage (BF%) ≥ 25%. In overweight and obese, internal control scores were lower, while uncontrolled and emotional eating scores were higher ( p < 0.05). According to the logistic regression analysis, as internal control locus increased, waist-to-hip ratio (OR = 0.888) and BF% (OR = 0.923) decreased, whereas an increase in chance locus (OR = 1.080) and uncontrolled eating (OR = 1.117) was associated with higher body mass index (BMI) ( p < 0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that WLOC is associated with eating behaviors and anthropometric measurements in menopausal women. The results highlight the importance of identifying WLOC in menopausal women and tailoring weight management programs accordingly.
