Biography

Dr. Kashmir Singh has made significant contributions in the field of plant functional genomics and metabolic engineering. He has characterized structural and regulatory genes of secondary metabolic pathways and their regulatory non-coding RNAs in medicinally important plants such as Saussurea lappa (costunolide biosynthesis), Chlorophytum borivilianum (saponins biosynthesis), Phyllanthus emblica, (flavonoid and Vitamin C biosynthesis) etc. He has also made important insights in trait improvement and stress tolerance using associated genes and non-coding RNAs in economically important crops such as Grapes, and potato. Dr Singh has characterized bHLH47 transcription factor involved in regulating iron homeostasis in plants. They have developed a method for creating genome edited lines in potatoes using hairy root induction. Thereafter, He has generated CRISPR/Cas9-edited StbHLH47 lines. The iron contents were quantified using ICP-MS and found to be high in the genome-edited lines as compared to WT plants. Their study provides novel insight into the role of StbHLH47 in modulating iron content, and this work will be a breakthrough in managing iron deficiency in the Indian population. Dr. Singh has published more than 180 papers in journals of international repute, edited three books, has patents to his credit and recipient of International and National fellowships.
