One of the primary tasks undertaken by autonomous vehicles (AVs) is object detection, which comes ahead of object tracking, trajectory estimation, and collision avoidance. Vulnerable road objects (e.g., pedestrians, cyclists, etc.) pose a greater challenge to the reliability of object detection operations due to their continuously changing behavior. The majority of commercially available AVs, and research into them, depends on employing expensive sensors. However, this hinders the development of further research on the operations of AVs. In this paper, therefore, we focus on the use of a lower-cost single-beam LiDAR in addition to a monocular camera to achieve multiple 3D vulnerable object detection in real driving scenarios, all the while maintaining real-time performance. This research also addresses the problems faced during object detection, such as the complex interaction between objects where occlusion and truncation occur, and the dynamic changes in the perspective and scale of bounding boxes. The video-processing module works upon a deep-learning detector (YOLOv3), while the LiDAR measurements are pre-processed and grouped into clusters. The output of the proposed system is objects classification and localization by having bounding boxes accompanied by a third depth dimension acquired by the LiDAR. Real-time tests show that the system can efficiently detect the 3D location of vulnerable objects in real-time scenarios.

In autonomous driving, object detection is considered a base step to many subsequent processes. However, object detection is challenged by loss in visibility caused by rain. Rainfall occurs in two main forms, which are streaks and streaks accumulations. Each degradation type imposes different effect on the captured videos; therefore, they cannot be mitigated in the same way. We propose a lightweight network which mitigates both types of rain degradation in real-time, without negatively affecting the object-detection task. The proposed network consists of two different modules which are used progressively. The first one is a progressive ResNet for rain streaks removal, while the second one is a transmission-guided lightweight network for rain streak accumulation removal. The network has been tested on synthetic and real rainy datasets and has been compared with state-of-the-art (SOTA) networks. Additionally, time performance evaluation has been performed to ensure real-time performance. Finally, the effect of the developed deraining network has been tested on YOLO object-detection network. The proposed network exceeded SOTA by 1.12 dB in PSNR on the average result of multiple synthetic datasets with 2.29× speedup. Finally, it can be observed that the inclusion of different lightweight stages works favorably for real-time applications and could be updated to mitigate different degradation factors such as snow and sun blare.

Occasionally intravenous insertion forms a challenge to a number of patients. Inserting an IV needle is a difficult task that requires a lot of skill. At the moment, only doctors and medical personnel are allowed to do this because it requires finding the right vein, inserting the needle properly, and carefully injecting fluids or drawing out blood. Even for trained professionals, this can be done incorrectly, which can cause bleeding, infection, or damage to the vein. It is especially difficult to do this on children, elderly people, and people with certain skin conditions. In these cases, the veins are harder to see, so it is less likely to be done correctly the first time and may cause blood clots. In this research, a low-cost embedded system utilizing Near-Infrared (NIR) light technology is developed, and two novel approaches are proposed to detect and select the best candidate veins. The two approaches utilize multiple computer vision tools and are based on contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE). The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is 91.3% with an average 1.4 s processing time on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

The world population is expected to grow to over 10 billion by 2050 and therefore impose further stress on food production. Precision agriculture has become the main approach used to enhance productivity with sustainability in agricultural production. This paper conducts a technical review of how robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), and thermal imaging (TI) technologies transform precision agriculture operations, focusing on sensing, automation, and farm decision making. Agricultural robots promote labor solutions and efficiency by utilizing their sensing devices and kinematics in planting, spraying, and harvesting. Through accurate assessment of pests/diseases and quality assurance of the harvested crops, AI and TI bring efficiency to the crop monitoring sector. Different deep learning models are employed for plant disease diagnosis and resource management, namely the VGG16 model, InceptionV3, and MobileNet; the PlantVillage, PlantDoc, and FieldPlant datasets are used respectively. To reduce crop losses, AI–TI integration enables early recognition of fluctuations caused by pests or diseases, allowing control and mitigation in good time. While the issues of cost and environmental variability (illumination, canopy moisture, and microclimate instability) are taken into consideration, the advancement in artificial intelligence, robotics technology, and combined technologies will offer sustainable solutions to the existing gaps.

Modern dental education increasingly calls for smarter tools that combine precision with meaningful feedback. In response, this study presents the Intelligent Dental Handpiece (IDH), a next-generation training tool designed to support dental students and professionals by providing real-time insights into their techniques. The IDH integrates motion sensors and a lightweight machine learning system to monitor and classify hand movements during practice sessions. The system classifies three motion states: Alert (10°–15° deviation), Lever Range (0°–10°), and Stop Range (>15°), based on IMU-derived features. A dataset collected from 61 practitioners was used to train and evaluate three machine learning models: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (Linear RBF, Polynomial kernels), and a Neural Network. Performance across models ranged from 98.52% to 100% accuracy, with Random Forest and Logistic Regression achieving perfect classification and AUC scores of 1.00. Motion features such as Deviation, Take Time, and Device type were most influential in predicting skill levels. The IDH offers a practical and scalable solution for improving dexterity, safety, and confidence in dental training environments.

Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is a widely adopted metaheuristic for solving complex combinatorial problems; however, performance is often deteriorated by premature convergence and limited exploration in later iterations. Eclipse Randomness–Ant Colony Optimization (ER-ACO) is introduced as a lightweight ACO variant in which an exponentially fading randomness factor is integrated into the state-transition mechanism. Strong early-stage exploration is enabled, and a smooth transition to exploitation is induced, improving convergence behavior and solution quality. Low computational overhead is maintained while exploration and exploitation are dynamically balanced. ER-ACO is positioned within real-time healthcare logistics, with a focus on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) routing and hospital resource scheduling, where rapid and adaptive decision-making is critical for patient outcomes. These systems face dynamic constraints such as fluctuating traffic conditions, urgent patient arrivals, and limited medical resources. Experimental evaluation on benchmark instances indicates that solution cost is reduced by up to 14.3% relative to the slow-fade configuration (γ=1) in the 20-city TSP sweep, and faster stabilization is indicated under the same iteration budget. Additional comparisons against Standard ACO on TSP/QAP benchmarks indicate consistent improvements, with unchanged asymptotic complexity and negligible measured overhead at the tested scales. TSP/QAP benchmarks are used as controlled proxies to isolate algorithmic behavior; EMS deployment is treated as a motivating application pending validation on EMS-specific datasets and formulations. These results highlight ER-ACO’s potential as a lightweight optimization engine for smart healthcare systems, enabling real-time deployment on edge devices for ambulance dispatch, patient transfer, and operating room scheduling.
