Low-cost carriers (LCCs) have matured and influenced the global airline industry with their low fares. Because competitors can easily match prices, however, LCCs find it more challenging to hold on to their market position with this competitive edge. Whereas the low price is an important factor driving sales, it might communicate inferior service quality to customers and limit potential sales increases, particularly under severe market competition. Therefore, this study investigates the factors that moderate the perception of LCCs' services under the low-price condition to avoid this dilemma. We examine two perception-related variables, subjective norms and self-congruence, as moderators of the relationship between customers' purchase intention and service offerings. We find that these moderators negatively influence the positive relationship between purchase intention and service offerings, such as SERVQUAL (service quality) and customized service. This finding suggests that low prices form an unfavorable perception, such as being “cheap,” which in turn limits or negatively affects customers' purchase intention. Therefore, LCCs are recommended to target the right customers, establish appropriate custom-brand identification, and appeal the functional value of the services that they provide. This will help them to turn customers' attention from the price to other service dimensions.

Despite growing government financial support for scientific development, our understanding of the effect of funding practices on scientific performance is limited. This study investigates the effects of funding policy change on the scientific performance measured by research output of government research institutes (GRIs) in South Korea. This paper analyzes the balanced panel data to examine performance at Korean GRIs during 90's. Our findings indicate that the introduction of a new funding policy improved the journal impact factors of papers.

R&D cooperation is a key to combining firms’ internal and external technological capabilities. This article empirically investigates the effect of R&D cooperation partners on different types of product innovation. This study considers four types of partners in R&D cooperation: suppliers, customers, competitors, and universities. Three purposes of product innovation are considered: diversification of products, pioneering a new market, and standardization of technology. The main findings are: (1) R&D cooperation with suppliers and competitors has a positive effect on standardization of technology, (2) R&D cooperation with customers has a positive effect on diversification of products and pioneering a new market, and (3) R&D cooperation with universities has a positive effect on pioneering a new market and standardization of technology.

Interdisciplinary research (IDR) has been a growing paradigm in science and technology for the past few decades because of the increase in the complexity of scientific and technological innovation. However, only a small amount of research has examined how IDR across different disciplines has developed over the past few decades and its relationship with R&D performance. This study examines the development of IDR in various scientific disciplines from the perspective of science and technology and its relationship to R&D performance. In doing so, we analyze the co-authorship of all the papers and patents produced by government research institutes in the largest innovation cluster in South Korea, that is, Daedeok Innopolis, during 1992 and 2012 using a network analysis. Those institutes each focus on a different specific discipline. We found that not only does the IDR network structure demonstrate that IDR increased over time regardless of the discipline but also that the scope of IDR has expanded across all the research institutes. In addition, the development of IDR in different disciplines varies significantly, depending on the scientific disciplines. Interestingly, we also found that higher interdisciplinarity in scientific publications and patents is significantly correlated with higher R&D performance.

We examine whether a time lag exists before the network position of a software service affects its performance. Moreover, we analyze different time lags, using empirical data about software services compositions and their usages. Our results show that software services in central positions (i.e., high betweenness centrality) attract users the most. The highest effect exhibits, if the time lag is 26–32 months. Our findings are relevant, as they can guide developers in marketing their software services and are expected to impact innovation studies regarding the importance of considering time lags and analyzing complementary knowledge.

How do latecomer firms combine strategies to successfully grow in a specialized suppliers sector? We examine how latecomer firms combine technology and market development strategies to grow in the sector. Through an in-depth comparative case study, we found that, depending on the modularity of the technology that latecomer firms select, firms show distinctive combinations of technology and market development strategies that led to the successful growth in the sector. More specifically, the combinations spring from the selection of product architecture, followed by product development procedure, and knowledge acquisition that constitute technology development strategy and customer base management as a key activity of market development strategy. Based on the results, we introduce an analytical framework to explain two optimal combinations of technology and market development strategies corresponding to the selection of product architecture. This article provides new empirical evidence and an analytical framework for explaining an importance of optimal combinations of strategies in a latecomer firm's success.

We introduce a topic modeling analysis to identify the evolutionary patterns among topics in entrepreneurship research. We collect all the entrepreneurship- related articles (21,000 articles) published over the past 31 years as listed in Scopus and employ this method in two empirical settings: the top nine management journals and all the journals. We find that articles from all the journals focus more on phenomenon-based topics, particularly the types of entrepreneurship, while those in the leading journals focus more on discipline- based topics, centering on the sources and organization of entrepreneurship. Our approach suggests topics in entrepreneurship research have a distinctive life cycle.

The compromise effect dictates that a decision-maker chooses a middle option over an extreme one given a set of choice alternatives since choosing an intermediate option is easier to justify, less likely to be criticized, and is consistent with loss aversion. Our experiment is designed to identify whether the connection between the extremeness of the options and the size of the consideration sets is economically and statistically significant and thus would have important behavioural implications. Specifically, we compare decision-making under small and large consideration sets where the extremeness of the comprising choice options is high, as opposed to low. The results demonstrate that an increase in consideration set size leads to weaker compromise effect (i.e. boundary condition) but when composed of high extremeness, strengthens the compromise effect.

It is important to consider the interweaving nature of online and offline social networks when we examine social network evolution. However, it is difficult to find any research that examines the process of social tie formation from an integrated perspective. In our study, we quantitatively measure offline interactions and examine the corresponding evolution of online social network in order to understand the significance of interrelationship between online and offline social factors in generating social ties. We analyze the radio signal strength indicator sensor data from a series of social events to understand offline interactions among the participants and measure the structural attributes of their existing online Facebook social networks. By monitoring the changes in their online social networks before and after offline interactions in a series of social events, we verify that the ability to develop an offline interaction into an online friendship is tied to the number of social connections that participants previously had, while the presence of shared mutual friends between a pair of participants disrupts potential new connections within the pre-designed offline social events. Thus, while our integrative approach enables us to confirm the theory of preferential attachment in the process of network formation, the common neighbor theory is not supported. Our dual-dimensional network analysis allows us to observe the actual process of social network evolution rather than to make predictions based on the assumption of self-organizing networks.

The literature on online product reviews is based on the fundamental premise that reviews impact search costs and also affect consumers’ confidence in their purchase decisions. However, this proposition has not been proven in the literature. To this end, we conducted an experiment using an eye-tracking machine to measure the impact of online editorial and customer reviews on consumer’s information search costs and on decision confidence. Search costs in this study are defined in terms of time costs and cognitive effort costs. We find that when present, both editorial reviews and customer reviews separately reduce both search time and cognitive effort considerably, but not when present together. We also find that the presence of both types of reviews increases decision confidence considerably, but do not lower search costs. These results suggest that ecommerce firms can benefit from the presence of either or both editorial and customer reviews through either lower search costs, or higher decision confidence. We conclude with several managerial recommendations for ecommerce firms.

The paradigm of the mobile ecosystem is rapidly changing, especially since the uction of smart devices. New important players are emerging, and the scope of the mobile ecosystem is expanding and encroaching on the technological boundaries of other IT ecosystems. However, our understanding of the mobile ecosystem has been limited given the few existing studies. Therefore, in this paper, we empirically examine the network structure of a mobile ecosystem by measuring the technology knowledge flows between firms based on a patent citation analysis of the mobile industry. We found that platform providers are emerging as the center of the knowledge flow activity in the ecosystem. By introducing a new network index, the Network Concentration Index, which measures a firm’s knowledge concentration ratio toward subsectors, we also found that each platform provider shows distinctive changing patterns in their technology knowledge network and that each is forming its own sub-network with increased influence on affiliated firms.

Firms in high-technology industries have faced great technological and market uncertainty and volatility in the past few decades. In order to be competitive and sustainable in this environment, firms have been pursuing technological innovation, product differentiation, vertical integration, and alliances, which eventually drive industry convergence, defined as the process of blurring boundaries between previously distinct industries. Although industry convergence has greatly affected industrial structure and the economy, little research has investigated this phenomenon, especially its diffusion patterns; thus, it is still unclear which industries are converging more rapidly or have a higher potential for convergence. This paper explores these issues by investigating industry convergence in U.S. high-technology industries, using a large set of newspaper articles from 1987 to 2012. We perform a co-occurrence-based analysis to obtain information on industry convergence and estimate its diffusion patterns using an internal-influence logistic model. We find heterogeneous diffusion patterns, depending on convergent-industry pairs and their wide dispersion. In addition, we find that the potential degree of industry convergence is significantly negatively associated with its growth rate, which indicates that a great deal of time will be required for industry convergence between high-technology industries with this high potential to achieve a high degree of convergence.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between service integration and manufacturing firms’ profitability and to identify profitable services. Design/methodology/approach – The study examines the service integration data of 202 firms in the machinery and equipment sector in Korea. Firm profitability comes from secondary data to eliminate common method bias. Findings – The relationship between service integration, measured as the service-revenue ratio, and profitability has an inverted U-shape, likely stemming from political costs, a loss of opportunity in manufacturing improvements arising from resource constraints, and an increase in transaction costs. In addition, process operation outsourcing and technical consulting significantly contribute to profitability. Research limitations/implications – The authors show that the effect of service integration on profitability diminishes when firms experience both resource constraints and an increase in transaction costs from implementing the strategy. Furthermore, the profitability of services is heterogeneous across different offerings. Further research in other countries and sectors is necessary to refine the relationships suggested herein. Practical implications – Managers should strive to minimize the costs and problems stemming from resource constraints and transaction costs. It is also important to utilize external resources to achieve profitability from service integration. Managers also need to realize the different cost-revenue structure of each service. Originality/value – The authors find that the relationship between profitability and service integration depends on the degree of resource constraints and transaction costs. The authors also identify which service offerings are highly profitable, which has not been done in previous research.
