Biography

Wendy C. Birmingham is an Associate Professor and Chair of Applied Social Psychology, Health Emphasis Department at Brigham Young University. She received an MS and PhD in Social Psychology and Health Psychology from the University of Utah in 2009 and 2011, respectively. She obtained a postdoc in Cancer Control from Huntsman Cancer Institute in 2013. Her program of research is guided by previous findings indicating that the quality and quantity of one’s social relationships are linked to lower morbidity and mortality, and protect against the adverse effects of stress. Her research focuses on two pathways linking the relationship between quality and quantity to health outcomes: physiological pathways and behavioral pathways. In terms of examining physiological pathways, she is interested in how marital relationship quality and family processes can impact blood pressure, a predictor of cardiovascular disease risk.
