Prof. Claudio Pignata was born in Naples, Italy. After graduating in medicine in 1977 at the University of Naples, Italy, he undertook residency training in pediatrics at the same University. He has spent several years working in the field of immunology, first in Italy, then in the USA, where he held the position of Research Associate at Harvard University in Boston. He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine. He is the Director of the Pediatric Immunology Area in the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Naples Federico II. Since 2005, he has been the Director of the Ph.D. program “Reproduction, Development and Growth in Man” and Coordinator of the course of Pediatrics and Human Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Naples Federico II. His research main interests are in the characterization of novel genetic causes and pathogenic mechanisms underlying primary immunodeficiencies and the definition of novel therapeutic approaches. His research group has identified and characterized the first human case of the murine-equivalent nude/SCID phenotype (MIM #601705; Pignata guarino syndrome). He has authored and co-authored over 230 papers and conference contributions. He is a member of several scientific societies, including being an active member of the European Society of Immunodeficiencies (ESID), Italian Society of Pediatrics and Italian Society of Immunology and Immunopathology.
