Rabi oscillations have long been thought to be out of reach in simulations using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), a prominent symptom of the failure of the adiabatic approximation for nonperturbative dynamics. We present a reformulation of TDDFT which requires response quantities only, thus enabling an adiabatic approximation to predict such dynamics accurately because the functional is evaluated on a density close to the ground state, instead of on the fully nonperturbative density. Our reformulation applies to any real-time dynamics, redeeming TDDFT far from equilibrium. Examples of a resonantly-driven local excitation in a model He atom, and charge-transfer in the LiCN molecule are given.
Lactose is a commonly used component of pharmaceutical medications in tablet form. It was previously shown that lactose changes conformationally after saturation in fluidized beds with active pharmaceutical ingredients obtained by repeated dilution of antibodies to interferon-gamma in combination with an external intensive vibration treatment. Moreover, it was revealed that these solutions are self-organized dispersed systems in which nano-objects are formed. Their biological activity and mechanism of action were previously established as well. The current work was dedicated to investigating the optical properties of fluidized lactose powders in the terahertz frequency range. Spectral analyses of powders of crystalline lactose saturated in fluidized beds with a diluted solution of either glycine buffer, antibodies to interferon-gamma, or water were carried out, intact lactose served as a control. All powders were tableted before testing. In the course of the study, the macroscopic parameters of the tablets were established, at which they had a stable shape and their THz optical properties had no parasitic diffraction losses. These tablets were analyzed using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy in the frequency range of 0.2–2.6 THz. The differentiation between the spectra was conducted using a principal component analysis. The differences between intact lactose and the lactose saturated with any of studied solutions were demonstrated. Additionally, lactose saturated with solutions of multiple dilutions of a substance (antibodies or glycine buffer) differed not only from intact lactose, but also from lactose saturated with a diluted solution of water. Moreover, discrimination of lactose formulations saturated with different substances (antibodies or glycine buffer) was also possible. Additionally, intact lactose differed from lactose saturated with diluted water. The methods reported could be useful for the quality control of the medications based on the technology of repeated dilution of an original substance.

While the variational principle for excited-state energies leads to a route to obtaining excited-state densities from time-dependent density functional theory, relatively little attention has been paid to the quality of the resulting densities in real space obtained with different exchange-correlation functional approximations or how nonadiabatic approximations developed for energies of states of double-excitation character perform for their densities. Here we derive an expression directly in real space for the excited-state density, which includes the case of nonadiabatic kernels and consequently is able, for the first time, to yield densities of states of double-excitation character. Under some well-defined simplifications, we compare the performance of the local-density approximation and exact-exchange approximation, which are in a sense at the opposite extremes of the fundamental functional approximations, on local and charge-transfer excitations in one-dimensional model systems and show that the dressed Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) approach gives good densities of double excitations.
Recent progress has been made in capturing spectral features of electronic states of double-excitation character in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) through a frequency-dependent kernel. While it might appear that this development is limited to the perturbative regime, we show that when used within response-reformulated TDDFT (RR-TDDFT), it accurately captures strong-field dynamics involving states of double-excitation character. More generally, this demonstrates how RR-TDDFT enables exchange-correlation functional developments in the response regime, which have so far been more successful than those in the nonlinear regime, to be exploited for nonperturbative dynamics, thus significantly broadening their range of applications.
Subject of study. The absorption spectra of cadmium yellow pigment (cadmium sulfide, CdS) in the terahertz (THz) frequency range, as well as its crystalline structures (cubic and hexagonal crystal systems), are studied. Aim of study. The aim of this study is to investigate the features of these structures using quantum-chemical calculations and time-resolved THz spectroscopy to develop new approaches for the attribution of artworks. Method. Theoretical calculations are performed within the framework of density functional theory using CP2K software, and experimental measurements are performed on a time-resolved THz spectrometer. A static method within the harmonic-potential approximation is applied to analyze vibrational modes. Main results. The predominance of the cubic crystal system of CdS in the studied sample is revealed, which is supported by the high intensity of vibrational modes in the calculated spectra. The experimental absorption spectrum is in agreement with the computational model. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the combined application of quantum-chemical calculations and THz spectroscopy for pigment analysis. Practical significance. The results demonstrate the potential of preliminary quantum-chemical calculations of absorption spectra for the further application of THz spectroscopy in museum practice, including pigment identification, art restoration, and forgery detection. The findings may also be of value in materials science and photonics.
