Akke is an epidemiologist with a focus on infections and antibiotics. She holds an HRB Research Leader Award for setting up the CARA network (Collaboration to reduce Antimicrobial use and Resistance and identifying opportunities for improvement and Awareness). The CARA network aims to provide an open access data infrastructure where data from GPs, hospitals and the community can be uploaded and compared in easy visualisations. She works closely with the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in Galway to design the dashboard. She is also the Irish lead in the European ValueDx consortium (value-dx.eu), which focuses its research on community patient care to trial infection treatments and deliver innovative and cost-effective diagnostics to reduce antibiotic use. Akke grew up in Antwerp, Belgium, and moved to Ireland in 2005.
