Dynamic hand gesture recognition is a challenging problem in the area of hand-based human–robot interaction (HRI), such as issues of a complex environment and dynamic perception. In the context of this problem, we learn from the principle of the data-glove-based hand gesture recognition method and propose a dynamic hand gesture recognition method based on 3D hand pose estimation. This method uses 3D hand pose estimation, data fusion and deep neural network to improve the recognition accuracy of dynamic hand gestures. First, a 2D hand pose estimation method based on OpenPose is improved to obtain a fast 3D hand pose estimation method. Second, the weighted sum fusion method is utilized to combine the RGB, depth and 3D skeleton data of hand gestures. Finally, a 3DCNN + ConvLSTM framework is used to identify and classify the combined dynamic hand gesture data. In the experiment, the proposed method is verified on a developed dynamic hand gesture database for HRI and gets 92.4% accuracy. Comparative experiment results verify the reliability and efficiency of the proposed method.

Depth completion aims at predicting dense pixel-wise depth from an extremely sparse map captured from a depth sensor, e.g., LiDARs. It plays an essential role in various applications such as autonomous driving, 3D reconstruction, augmented reality, and robot navigation. Recent successes on the task have been demonstrated and dominated by deep learning based solutions. In this article, for the first time, we provide a comprehensive literature review that helps readers better grasp the research trends and clearly understand the current advances. We investigate the related studies from the design aspects of network architectures, loss functions, benchmark datasets, and learning strategies with a proposal of a novel taxonomy that categorizes existing methods. Besides, we present a quantitative comparison of model performance on three widely used benchmarks, including indoor and outdoor datasets. Finally, we discuss the challenges of prior works and provide readers with some insights for future research directions.

The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has caused mortality and morbidity worldwide. Oropharyngeal-swab (OP-swab) sampling is widely used for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in the world. To avoid the clinical staff from being affected by the virus, we developed a 9-degree-of-freedom (DOF) rigid-flexible coupling (RFC) robot to assist the COVID-19 OP-swab sampling. This robot is composed of a visual system, UR5 robot arm, micro-pneumatic actuator and force-sensing system. The robot is expected to reduce risk and free up the clinical staff from the long-term repetitive sampling work. Compared with a rigid sampling robot, the developed force-sensing RFC robot can facilitate OP-swab sampling procedures in a safer and softer way. In addition, a varying-parameter zeroing neural network-based optimization method is also proposed for motion planning of the 9-DOF redundant manipulator. The developed robot system is validated by OP-swab sampling on both oral cavity phantoms and volunteers.
Bionic bimanual robot teleoperation can transfer the grasping and manipulation skills of human dual hands to the bionic bimanual robots to realize natural and flexible manipulation. The motion capture of dual hands plays an important role in the teleoperation. The motion information of dual hands can be captured through the hand detection, localization, and pose estimation and mapped to the bionic bimanual robots to realize the teleoperation. However, although the motion capture technology has achieved great achievements in recent years, visual dual-hand motion capture is still a great challenge. So, this work proposed a dual-hand detection method and a 3-dimensional (3D) hand pose estimation method based on body and hand biological inspiration to achieve convenient and accurate monocular dual-hand motion capture and bionic bimanual robot teleoperation. First, a dual-hand detection method based on body structure constraints is proposed, which uses a parallel structure to combine hand and body relationship features. Second, a 3D hand pose estimation method with bone-constraint loss from single RGB images is proposed. Then, a bionic bimanual robot teleoperation method is designed by using the proposed hand detection and pose estimation methods. Experiment results on public hand datasets show that the performances of the proposed hand detection and 3D hand pose estimation outperform state-of-the-art methods. Experiment results on a bionic bimanual robot teleoperation platform shows the effectiveness of the proposed teleoperation method.

Aiming at the problems of accurate and fast hand gesture detection and teleoperation mapping in the hand-based visual teleoperation of dexterous robots, an efficient hand gesture detection framework based on deep learning is proposed in this article. It can achieve an accurate and fast hand gesture detection and teleoperation of dexterous robots based on an anchor-free network architecture by using an RGB-D camera. First, an RGB-D early-fusion method based on the HSV space is proposed, effectively reducing background interference and enhancing hand information. Second, a hand gesture classification network (HandClasNet) is proposed to realize hand detection and localization by detecting the center and corner points of hands, and a HandClasNet is proposed to realize gesture recognition by using a parallel EfficientNet structure. Then, a dexterous robot hand-arm teleoperation system based on the hand gesture detection framework is designed to realize the hand-based teleoperation of a dexterous robot. Our method achieves high accuracy with fast speed on public and custom hand datasets and outperforms some state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the application of the proposed method in the hand-based teleoperation system can control the grasping of various objects by a dexterous hand-arm system in real time and accurately, which verifies the efficiency of our method.

Hand detection is a crucial technology for space human–robot interaction (SHRI), and the awareness of hand identities is particularly critical. However, most advanced works have three limitations: 1) the low detection accuracy of small-size objects; 2) insufficient temporal feature modeling between frames in videos; and 3) the inability of real-time detection. In the article, a temporal detector (called TA-RSSD) is proposed based on the SSD and spatiotemporal long short-term memory (ST-LSTM) for real-time detection in SHRI applications. Next, based on the online tubelet analysis, a real-time identity-awareness module is designed for multiple hand object identification. Several notable properties are described as follows: 1) the hybrid structure of the Resnet-101 and the SSD improves the detection accuracy of small objects; 2) three-level feature pyramidal structure retains rich semantic information without losing detailed information; 3) a group of the redesigned temporal attentional LSTM (TA-LSTM) is utilized for three-level feature map modeling, which effectively achieves background suppression and scale suppression; 4) low-level attention maps are used to eliminate in-class similarity between hand objects, which improves the accuracy of identity awareness; and 5) a novel association training scheme enhances the temporal coherence between frames. The proposed model is evaluated on the SHRI-VID dataset (collected according to the task requirements), the AU-AIR dataset, and the ImageNet-VID benchmark. Extensive ablation studies and comparisons on detection and identity-awareness capacities show the superiority of the proposed model. Finally, a set of actual testing is conducted on a space robot, and the results show that the proposed model achieves a real-time speed and high accuracy.
