Under no-notice evacuation scenarios with limited time horizons, the effectiveness of evacuation can be negatively impacted by intermediate trips that are made by family members and the identification of vulnerable populations. The emergence of shared-mobility companies, such as Uber and DiDi, can be considered as a potential means to address above-mentioned concerns. The proposed study explores the utility of shared-mobility services under emergency-evacuation scenarios and makes recommendations to relevant bodies that are based on the obtained and they are discussed herein. The study investigates attitudes of the public, experts, and drivers towards the use of shared-mobility resources during emergency evacuations based on a stated preference survey. Results of questionnaires, driver interviews, and face-to-face expert interviews have been analyzed to validate the feasibility and identify potential problems of leveraging shared-mobility services during evacuation response, especially in metropolitan areas wherein such services are already ubiquitous. Numerical simulations have been performed to quantify potential improvements in the total trip distance and number of evacuees after incorporating the use of shared mobility into emergency-response operations. However, despite the observed improvement in emergency efficiency, certain realistic roadblocks must be overcome. Realization of the proposed objective heavily depends on actionable policy recommendations, provided herein as a reference for the government, emergency management agencies, and shared-mobility companies.

Owing to its mathematical elegance and empirical accuracy, the speed‐density model is critical in solving macroscopic traffic problems. This study developed an improved general‐logistic‐based speed‐density model, which is a new method in macroscopic traffic flow theory. This article extensively discusses the properties of the general‐logistic‐based speed‐density model. The physical meanings and values of all the parameters were determined based on the effect of heavy vehicles and the method for the linear and nonlinear regression analysis. The accuracy and versatility of the developed model were also found to be excellent based on the field data and relative error.

Many small-spacing interchanges (SSI) appear when the density of the expressway interchanges increases. However, the characteristics of traffic accidents in SSI have not been explained clearly. Therefore, this paper systematically takes the G3001 expressway in Xi’an as the research object to explore the accident characteristics of SSI. Firstly, the expressway is divided into four sections. Furthermore, their safety can be evaluated by the number of accidents per unit distance of 100 million vehicles (NAP). Subsequently, eight indexes, such as mean spacing distance (MSD), are selected to explain the cause affecting expressway safety by developing the least square support vector machine (LSSVM). Secondly, the difference between SSI and normal-spacing interchanges (NSI) is clarified by statistical analysis. Finally, LSSVM, random forest, and logistic regression models are built using 12 indicators, such as the time spent exploring the causes of serious accidents. The results show that the inner ring NAP in Sections I and II with SSI is 27.2 and 33.7, higher than in other sections. The density, annual average daily traffic, and MSD adversely affect expressway traffic safety. The road condition mainly influences the serious traffic accidents in the SSI. This study can provide the theoretical basis for traffic management and accident prevention in the SSI of the expressway.

Due to topography, geology, and other factors, small spacing sections are common between tunnels and interchange exits. There is mandatory lane-changing behavior for vehicles that need to leave the main line and drive inside the road before leaving the tunnel. Affected by the “white hole” of a tunnel, the lane-changing behavior of off-ramp vehicles differs significantly from that of original roadbed sections. To study the mandatory lane-changing duration (MLCD) of off-ramp vehicles in small spacing sections of the tunnel to interchange in mountainous areas, their time and trajectory data were collected based on a driving simulator. According to the characteristics of the data, the survival analysis method was used to analyze the influence on the MLCD of off-ramp vehicles of the spacing section between the tunnel and interchange, vehicle types, tunnel types, ramp types, highway service level, and whether to set exit advance guide signs in the tunnel and the Cox proportional hazards model of the MLCD was established. The results showed that the spacing of the tunnel interchange, the road service level, and whether to set exit advance guide signs in the tunnel had significant effects on the MLCD of vehicles, while the vehicle, the tunnel, and the ramp types did not. When the spacing section of the tunnel interchange was less than 500 m, the off-ramp vehicle had continuous mandatory lane-changing behavior, and when the distance decreased from 400 m to 300 m, the risk rate of lane changing increased by 5.68 times. Survival function curve estimation provided the 75% quantile of MLCD of off-ramp vehicles under different conditions, which could provide a theoretical reference for setting the minimum distance between a tunnel and interchange exit.

Real-time crash prediction helps identify and prevent the occurrence of traffic crash. For years, various real-time crash prediction models have been investigated to provide effective information for proactive traffic management. When building real-time crash prediction model, a suitable variable space together with a specific time interval for traffic data aggregation and an appropriate modelling algorithm should be applied. Regarding the intercorrelation problem with variable space, comprehensive real-time crash prediction model considering available traffic data characteristics in applicable circumstances needs to be explored. Taking Xi’an G3001 Expressway as study area, real road traffic and accident data during the period from January 2014 to January 2019 on this expressway are applied for real-time crash prediction. To better capture traffic flow characteristics on expressway and improve the practicality of real-time crash prediction model, two new variables (segment difference coefficient and lane difference coefficient) describing the smoothness and continuity of traffic flow in spatial dimension are developed and incorporated in building the crash prediction model to solve the intercorrelation problem with variable space. Random forest (RF) is then adopted to specify the quantitative relationship between specific variable and crash risk. Real-time crash prediction model based on support vector machine (SVM) using new composed variable space is built. The results show that simplified variable space could contribute to the same classification power in currently used real-time crash prediction models compared with traditional variable space. Moreover, the prediction model based on SVM reaches an accuracy level of 0.9, which performs better than other currently used prediction models.

Contraflow is a common traffic strategy used to improve the capacity of outbound roads during mass evacuation. Previous studies have focused on the contraflow network configuration, travel time, and number of evacuated vehicles on a macroscopic level. Only a few researchers have considered microscopic factors, such as the contraflow characteristics and moving bottlenecks caused by coaches and trucks. In this study, the effects of the contraflow strategy were investigated through field experiments and traffic simulations. Traffic data were collected from highway segments where trucks were forbidden under regular and contraflow conditions for analysis of the traffic characteristics and the effects of coach moving bottlenecks. The results demonstrate that the capacity and flow speed of contraflow lanes are lower than normal lanes, owing to the narrow cross sections and unfamiliar driving environment. The moving bottlenecks also reduced the speed of passenger car platoons by approximately 5–20 km/h. Four different contraflow schemes were developed and evaluated by Vissim to examine their effectiveness for minimizing the effect of truck moving bottlenecks. The findings revealed an obvious negative effect of trucks on the performance of the contraflow strategy, indicating the need for specific schemes when the truck ratio is large.
