Prof. Silvia Bisti was formerly the Dean of the Faculty of Biotechnology and affiliated with the Department of Biotechnological and Applied Clinical Sciences at the University of L’Aquila, Italy; she is now retired, currently affiliated with INBB and serves as the Scientific Director of a startup. Her career began as a researcher at the CNR Institute of Neurophysiology in Pisa (led by Prof L. Maffei), focusing on adult visual function, followed by stays at the University of Pennsylvania (with Prof J. Sprague) and the Max-Planck Institute für Psychiatrie in Munich (with Prof H. Hollender). Later, she shifted to studying pre- and post-natal visual system development, exploring neurotransmitter release (with Prof L. Chalupa) and environmental stress (with Dr D. Protti). Over the past decade, her core research has centered on retinal degeneration and protection mechanisms. She collaborates with Universitá Cattolica in Rome (Prof Falsini) and University of Sydney (Prof J. Stone) on genetic/environmental links to disease progression and antioxidant/neuroprotective treatment efficacy, with recent work growing more therapy-oriented—including a successful saffron clinical trial for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (with Prof B. Falsini). She was Partner PI in a Telethon Project on opto-neural prosthetics for Retinitis Pigmentosa and holds the role of full professor of physiology and External Collaborator at the NetS Laboratory (NBT) of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Genova).
