The development of nanomedicine is expected to provide an innovative direction for addressing challenges associated with multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. In the past decades, although nanotechnology-based phototherapy has been developed for antimicrobial treatment since it rarely causes bacterial resistance, the clinical application of single-mode phototherapy has been limited due to poor tissue penetration of light sources. Therefore, combinatorial strategies are being developed. In this review, we first summarized the current phototherapy agents, which were classified into two functional categories: organic phototherapy agents (e.g., small molecule photosensitizers, small molecule photosensitizer-loaded nanoparticles and polymer-based photosensitizers) and inorganic phototherapy agents (e.g., carbo-based nanomaterials, metal-based nanomaterials, composite nanomaterials and quantum dots). Then the development of emerging phototherapy-based combinatorial strategies, including combination with chemotherapy, combination with chemodynamic therapy, combination with gas therapy, and multiple combination therapy, are presented and future directions are further discussed. The purpose of this review is to highlight the potential of phototherapy to deal with bacterial infections and to propose that the combination therapy strategy is an effective way to solve the challenges of single-mode phototherapy.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vasproliferative disorder disease principally observed in infants born prematurely with low birth weight. ROP is an important cause of childhood blindness. Although automatic or semi-automatic diagnosis of ROP has been conducted, most previous studies have focused on “plus” disease, which is indicated by abnormalities of retinal vasculature. Few studies have reported methods for identifying the “stage” of the ROP disease. Deep neural networks have achieved impressive results in many computer vision and medical image analysis problems, raising expectations that it might be a promising tool in the automatic diagnosis of ROP. In this paper, convolutional neural networks with a novel architecture are proposed to recognize the existence and severity of ROP disease per-examination. The severity of ROP is divided into mild and severe cases according to the disease progression. The proposed architecture consists of two sub-networks connected by a feature aggregate operator. The first sub-network is designed to extract high-level features from images of the fundus. These features from different images in an examination are fused by the aggregate operator, then used as the input for the second sub-network to predict its class. A large data set imaged by RetCam 3 is used to train and evaluate the model. The high classification accuracy in the experiment demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed architecture for recognizing the ROP disease.

The outcome of preterm infants has been varied in different hospitals and regions in developing countries. Regular clinical monitor are needed to know the effects of health care. This study aimed to describe the survival and morbidity rates of extreme to very preterm infants in 15 neonatal-intensive care hospitals in China. Data were collected from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2014 for preterm neonates with gestational age (GA) between 24 and 31 complete weeks born in hospitals from our collaborative study group. The primary outcomes were survival and major morbidities prior to hospital discharge. Major morbidities included bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and sepsis. Mutivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factor influencing on the outcomes. The preterm birth rate was 9.9 % (13 701/138 240). The proportion of extreme to very preterm infants was 1.1 % and 11.8 % respectively. The survival rate prior to discharge was increased with increasing GA (0, 24 weeks; 28 %, 25 weeks; 84.8 %, 26 weeks; 83.5 %, 27 weeks; 87.4 %, 28 weeks; 90.7 %, 29 weeks; 93.9 %, 30 weeks; 96 %, 31 weeks). Rate of survival and without severe morbidity according to GA were 0 at 24 weeks, 8 % at 25 weeks, 60.6 % at 26 weeks; 53.2 % at 27 weeks; 62.3 % at 28 weeks; 67.9 % at 29 weeks; 79.1 % at 30 weeks, 85.8 % at 31 weeks respectively. Rate of antenatal steroid use was 56 %. The antenatal steroid use was lower in GA < 28 weeks infants than that in GA between 28 and 32 weeks (28–44.3 % vs 49.7–60.1 %, P < 0.05). Infants at the lowest GAs had a highest incidence of morbidities. Overall, 58.5 % had respiratory distress syndrome, 12.5 % bronchopulmonary dysplasia, 3.9 % necrotizing enterocolitis, 15.4 % intraventricular hemorrhage, 5.4 % retinopathy of prematurity, 28.4 % patent ductus arteriosus, and 9.7 % sepsis. Mortality and morbidity were influenced by gestational age (OR = 0.891, 95 % CI: 0.796–0.999, p = 0.0047 and OR = 0.666, 95 % CI: 0.645–0.688, p = 0.000 respectively), birth weight (OR = 0.520, 95 % CI: 0.420–0.643, p = 0.000 and OR = 0.921, 95 % CI: 0.851–0.997, p = 0.041 respectively), SGA (OR = 1.861, 95 % CI: 1.148–3.017, p = 0.012 and OR = 1.511, 95 % CI: 1.300–1.755, p = 0.000 respectively), Apgar score <7 at 5 min (OR = 1.947, 95 % CI: 1.269–2.987, p = 0.002 and OR = 2.262, 95 % CI: 1.950–2.624, p = 0.000 respectively). The survival rate was increased with more prenatal steroid use (OR = 1.615, 95 % CI: 1.233–1.901, p = 0.033). Although most of the preterm infants with GAs ≥26 weeks survived, a high complication in survivors still can be observed. Rate of survival of GAs less than 26 weeks was still low, and quality improvement methods should be used to look into increasing the use of antenatal steroids in the very preterm births.

Annexin A is a kind of calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding proteins, which contributes to the formation of the cell membranes and cytoskeleton and played a part as a membrane skeleton to stabilize lipid bilayer. Autophagy is one of the most important programmed cell death mechanisms. And recently some reports suggest that annexin A family protein is associated with autophagy for annexin A can regulate the formation of vesicular lipid membranes and promote cell exocytosis. In this review, we summarized the roles of annexin A protein family in autophagy regulation and targeted medical treatment for better diagnoses and therapies.

Perinatal brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in children. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in full term infants, and white matter injury in premature infants are most known brain injury in perinatal period. Human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells contain hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells, lymphocytes, monocytes, and so on. Human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells have many biological functions, such as nerve and vascular regeneration, anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammation, and immune regulation. Human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells transplantation has achieved significant efficacy and safety in animal and clinical trials for the treatment of perinatal brain injury. We will review human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells transplantation for perinatal brain injury in this review.

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for premature neonates requiring mechanical ventilation. Methods: Premature neonates admitted to Chengdu Women’s and Children’s Central Hospital between July 2014 and December 2020 were retrospectively included in this study. Clinical and demographic factors were collated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the risk factors for premature infants requiring mechanical ventilation. Results: A total of 1262 premature neonates participated in the study. Among them, 423 (33.53%) neonates required mechanical ventilation, whereas 839 (66.48%) neonates did not require mechanical ventilation. Multivariate logistic regression analysis determined that a lower Apgar score at 5 min (OR = 0.595, 95% CI: 0.472– 0.74; P < 0.001), lower gestational age (very preterm) (OR = 11.745, 95% CI: 4.362, 31.619, P < 0.001), lower systolic blood pressure (OR = 0.864, 95% CI: 0.812– 0.917, P = 0.001), lower diastolic blood pressure (OR = 0.894, 95% CI: 0.831– 0.96, P = 0.002), higher respiratory rate (OR = 1.292, 95% CI: 1.238– 1.355, P < 0.001), increased C-reactive protein levels (OR=1.044, 95% CI: 1.003– 1.086, P = 0.036), and presence of patent ductus arteriosus (OR = 2.174, 95% CI: 1.185– 3.972, P = 0.012) were independently associated with an increased possibility of adopting mechanical ventilation in premature infants. ROC analysis demonstrated that the predicted power for premature neonates requiring mechanical ventilation was 0.855 (95% CI: 0.808– 0.902, P < 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, we determined that a lower Apgar score at 5 min, lower gestational age, lower systolic blood pressure, lower diastolic blood pressure, higher respiratory rate, increased C-reactive protein levels and presence of patent ductus arteriosus were independently associated with an increased possibility of adopting mechanical ventilation in premature infants.
