Biography

As a molecular biophysicist, my main interests are in the mechanisms of oxidative reactions relating to respiratory haem proteins such as the hemoglobin superfamily, and how these mechanisms relate to physiological and pathological functions. Some of my current research focuses on metalloproteins in health and disease: • The next generation of blood substitutes (see www.haemO2.com) • Role of human cytoglobin in lipid binding, lipid oxidation, cell signaling, and cancer therapy resistance. • Role of neuroglobin in cell signaling and cell protection in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. • Biochemical mechanisms oxidative stress in acute renal failure following rhabdomyolysis and delayed vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage. • Structure and functional roles of non-symbiotic plant hemoglobins and bacterial globins. • Cell signaling by oxidatively modified lipids and the formation of singlet oxygen resulting from lipid oxidation. • Developing novel compounds as ameliorators of hemoprotein-induced oxidative reactions.
