We report on the optical limiting (OL) in stable aqueous suspensions of detonation nanodiamond (ND) clusters with average size of 50, 110, and 320 nm. The nanosecond -scan measurements at wavelength of 532 nm revealed that the larger the cluster size, the better the OL performance and the higher the ray stability of the ND suspension. Our analysis showed that the nonlinear scattering and the nonlinear absorption are the dominant mechanisms of OL in aqueous ND suspensions.
We report on a high performance nonlinear optical filter for the telecommunication window that employs detonation nanodiamonds (NDs). The nanosecond Z-scan experiments revealed that the heavy water ND suspensions enable strong optical limiting in the wavelength range of 1400–1675 nm. We observed an enhancement of the optical limiting performance in the blue part of the communication window. In particular, at the wavelength of 1400 nm the transmittance of the 2 mm thick sample with 4.5 wt. % ND concentration is suppressed by 45% for the input fluence of . The proposed nonlinear optical filter employs the phenomena of the nonlinear absorption and the nonlinear light scattering in ND suspensions.
High pressure-high temperature (HP-HT) nanodiamonds and detonation nanodiamonds have unique optical properties and are promising materials for various applications in photonics. In this work, for the first time, comparative studies of the nonlinear optical properties of aqueous suspensions of HP-HT and detonation nanodiamonds under femtosecond laser excitation are performed. Using the z-scan technique, it was found that for the same laser pulse parameters HP-HT nanodiamonds exhibited optical limiting due to two-photon absorption while detonation nanodiamonds exhibited saturable absorption accompanied by short-term optical bleaching, revealing the different electronic-gap structures of the two types of nanodiamonds. The saturable absorption properties of detonation nanodiamonds are characterized by determining the saturable and non-saturable absorption coefficients, the saturation intensity, and the ratio of saturable to non-saturable losses. The nonlinear absorption in HP-HT nanodiamonds is described with the nonlinear absorption coefficient that decreases with decreasing concentration of nanoparticles linearly. The results obtained show the possibility of using aqueous suspensions of nanodiamonds for saturable absorption and optical limiting applications.
We performed the investigation of the polarization-sensitive photocurrent generated in silver-palladium metal-semiconductor nanocomposite films under irradiation with nanosecond laser pulses at the wavelength of 2600 nm. It is shown that in both the transverse and the longitudinal configuration, the surface photogalvanic (SPGE) and photon drag effects (PDE) contribute to the observed photocurrent. However, the temporal profile of the transverse photocurrent pulse is monopolar at any polarization and angle of incidence, while the temporal profile of the longitudinal photocurrent pulse depends on the polarization of the excitation beam. Specifically, the irradiation of the film with the s-polarized excitation beam produces a monopolar photoresponse, while at p-polarized excitation, the photoresponse is bipolar, having a short front and long tail. Obtained experimental results are in agreement with the developed phenomenological theory, which describes transverse and longitudinal photocurrents due to SPGE and PDE in terms of relevant second-order nonlinear susceptibilities and allows us to obtain their dependences on the angle of incidence and polarization of the excitation laser beam. The pronounced dependence of the photocurrent on the angle of incidence and polarization of the excitation beam opens avenues toward the development of polarization- and position-sensitive detectors for industrial and space applications.

We report on the polarization dependence of the optical limiting and nonlinear light scattering in nanodiamond clusters suspended in distilled water. The nanosecond Z-scan measurements at a wavelength of 532 nm reveal that the nonlinear transmittance of the suspension is independent of polarization, while the energy of the light pulses scattered at 90 deg shows a cosine-like dependence on the polarization azimuth of the incident beam. Moreover, the ratio of the energies of the vertically and horizontally polarized scattered pulses is a nonmonotonous function of the input fluence. The obtained results can be explained in terms of the change of scattering center size under the laser action and are in agreement with the predictions of the Rayleigh–Mie scattering theory.
