In recent decades, strong human activities have not only brought about climate change including both global warming and shifts in the weather patterns but have also caused anomalous variations of hydrological elements in different basins all around the world. Studying the mechanisms and causes of these hydrological variations scientifically is the basis for the management of water resources and the implementation of ecological protection. Therefore, taking the Yongding River mountain area as a representative watershed in China, the changes of different observed and simulated hydro-meteorological variables and their possible causes are analyzed on an inter-annual scale based on ground based observations and remotely sensed data of hydrology, meteorology and underlying surface characteristics from 1956 to 2016. The results show that the annual natural runoff of Guanting hydrological station in the main stream of the Yongding River, Cetian hydrological station and Xiangshuibao hydrological station in the tributary of the Yongding River all have a significant decreasing trend and abrupt changes, and all the abrupt change points of the annual natural runoff series of the three hydrological stations appear in the early 1980s. On the inter-annual scale, the water balance model with double parameters is unable to effectively simulate the natural surface runoff after the abrupt change points. The annual average precipitation after the abrupt change points decreases by no more than 10%, compared with that before the abrupt change points. However, the precipitation from July to August, which is the main runoff-production period, decreases by more than 25%, besides the intra-annual temporal distribution of precipitation becoming uniform and a significant decrease in effective rainfall, which is the source of the runoff. Meanwhile, the NDVI in the basin show an increasing trend, while the groundwater level and land water storage decrease significantly. These factors do not lead only to the continuous reduction of the annual natural runoff in the Yongding River mountain area from 1956 to 2016, but also result in significant changes of the hydro-meteorological relationship in the basin.

Night years have witnessed the construction of sponge city in China. In recent years, more frequent extreme rainstorm has put more pressure on urban flood control and waterlogging elimination, and the construction of sponge city has been facing many controversies. In response, this study discusses the concept, connotation, evaluation indexes, construction objectives, investment and benefits of sponge city construction. The key point is that the concept of the sponge city has expanded from the construction of low-impact development to a new model of urban development and construction, with an emphasis on improving the overall function of the city and enhancing the comprehensive response to urban water issues. Its construction benefits cannot be measured only in terms of flood control and waterlogging prevention. Besides, the biggest problem faced by cities is still flooding. The priority of building a sponge city is the prevention of waterlogging. Meanwhile, the integrity and systematic construction which integrates multiple sectors, industries and fields should be considered. The government should focus on the combination of ecological methods and engineering facilities, and scientifically promote the systematic management of urban water.

Reference precipitation (RP) serves as a benchmark for evaluating the accuracy of precipitation products; thus, the selection of RP considerably affects the evaluation. In order to quantify this impact and provide guidance for RP selection, three interpolation methods, namely inverse distance weighting (IDW), ordinary kriging (OK), and geographical weighted regression (GWR), along with six groups of station densities, were adopted to generate different RPs, based on the super-high-density rainfall observations as true values, and we analyzed the errors of different RPs and the impacts of RP selection on the assessment of GPM precipitation products. Results indicate that the RPs from IDW and GWR both approached the true values as the station density increased (CC > 0.90); while the RP from OK showed some differences (CC < 0.80), it was similar to GWR when the station density was low, but the accuracy improved at first and then worsened as the station density continued to increase; the evaluation results based on different RPs showed remarkable differences even under the same conditions; when the average distance between rainfall gauges that were utilized to generate RPs was below the medium value (i.e., d < 20 km), the evaluation based on RP derived from IDW and GWR was close enough to that based on the true precipitation, which indicates its feasibility in evaluating satellite precipitation products.

Flood disaster is one of the critical threats to cities. With the intellectualization tendency of Industry 4.0, refined urban flood models can effectively reproduce flood inundation scenarios and support the decision-making on the response to the flood. However, the spatiotemporal variability of rainfall and the spatial heterogeneity of the surface greatly increase the uncertainties in urban flood simulations. Therefore, it is crucial to account for spatiotemporal variability of rainfall events and grids of the model as accurately as possible to avoid misleading simulation results. This study aims to investigate the effect of temporal resolutions of rainfall and spatial resolutions of the model on urban flood modeling in small urban catchments and to explore a proper combination of spatiotemporal schemes. The IFMS Urban (integrated flood modeling system, urban) is used to construct a one-dimension and two-dimension coupled urban flood model in the typical inundated area in Dongguan, China. Based on five temporal resolutions of rainfall input and four spatial resolutions, the compound effect of spatiotemporal resolutions on the accuracy of urban flood simulations is systematically analyzed, and the variation characteristics are investigated. The results show that the finer the temporal resolution is, the higher the simulation accuracy of the maximum inundated water depth. Considering the spatial resolution, as the spatial grid becomes smaller, the relative error of the maximum inundated water depth decreases, but it also shows some nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, the smaller grid does not always mean a better simulation. The spatial resolution has a greater impact on the flood simulation accuracy than the temporal resolution. The simulation performance reaches the best when the grid interval is 100 m and the rainfall input interval is 5 min, 10 min, or 15 min. Affected by other factors such as terrain slope, the simulation accuracies under different spatiotemporal resolutions present complex nonlinear characteristics. The mechanisms of the compound effect of the spatiotemporal resolutions on the model simulation and the effect of underlying surface and topography on model simulation will be the focus of in-depth exploration for the future urban flood model.

Enhancing flood resilience has become crucial for watershed flood prevention. However, current methods for quantifying resilience often exhibit coarse spatiotemporal granularity, leading to insufficient precision in watershed resilience assessments and hindering the accurate implementation of resilience enhancement measures. This study proposes a watershed flood resilience assessment method based on a system performance curve that considers thresholds of inundation depth and duration. A nested one- and two-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic model, spanning two spatial scales, was utilized to simulate flood processes in plain river network areas with detailed and complex hydraulic connections. The proposed framework was applied to the Hangjiahu area (Taihu Basin, China). The results indicated that the overall trend of resilience curves across different underlying surfaces initially decreased and then increase, with a significant decline observed within 20–50 h. The resilience of paddy fields and forests was the highest, while that of drylands and grasslands was the lowest, but the former had less recovery ability than the latter. The resilience of urban systems sharply declined within the first 40 h and showed no signs of recovery, with the curve remaining at a low level. In some regions, the flood tolerance depth and duration for all land use types exceeded the upper threshold. The resilience of the western part of the Hangjiahu area was higher than that of other regions, whereas the resilience of the southern region was lower compared to the northern region. The terrain and tolerance thresholds of inundation depth were the main factors affecting watershed flood resilience. The findings of this study provide a basis for a deeper understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of flood resilience and for precisely guiding the implementation and management of flood resilience enhancement projects in the watershed.
