Domenico Trombetta is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Messina Dept. ChiBioFarAm holds a degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology, a degree in Pharmacy, and a PhD in Pharmacognosy. He is a Member of the PhD Board in "Applied Biology and Experimental Medicine". Since 2016, he has been included in the Register of Technological Innovation Experts of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE). He is also a member of the Committee for the Protection of Animal Welfare (O.P.B.A.) of the University of Messina. He carried out a research period abroad focused on the delivery of drugs to the central nervous system at the Biomembranes Group, Department of Biochemistry and Physiology of the University of Barcelona, ​​Spain. The research group, which he coordinates at the University of Messina, is mainly concerned with the study of plants and functional foods as well as on design, development, and experimentation of nutraceuticals, through in vitro and in vivo approaches. The main lines of research are the characterization of plant extracts and/or essential oils, as well as plant/food production/processing waste and isolated bioactive compounds, interaction with biological barriers, absorption, and transport studies by in vitro cell-free and cell-based analysis, as well as antioxidant, cytoprotective, and anti-inflammatory studies. He also deals with in vivo pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies on different animal models.
