Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is one of the dominant water constituents in inland and coastal waters, and SPM concnetration (CSPM) is a key parameter describing water quality. This study, using in-situ spectral and CSPM measurements as well as Sentinel 2 Multispectral Imager (MSI) images, aimed to develop CSPM retrieval models and further to estimate the CSPM values of Poyang Lake, China. Sixty-eight in-situ hyperspectral measurements and relative spectral response function were applied to simulate Sentinel 2 MIS spectra. Thirty-four samples were used to calibrate and the left samples were used to validate CSPM retrieval models, respectively. The developed models were then applied to two Sentinel 2 MSI images captured in wet and dry seasons, and the derived CSPM values were compared with those derived from MODIS B1 (λ = 645 nm). Results showed that the Sentinel 2 MSI B4–B8b models achieved acceptable to high fitting accuracies, which explained 81–93% of the variation of CSPM. The validation results also showed the reliability of these six models, and the estimated CSPM explained 77–93% of the variation of measured CSPM with the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) ranging from 36.87% to 21.54%. Among those, a model based on B7 (λ = 783 nm) appeared to be the most accurate one. The Sentinel 2 MSI-derived CSPM values were generally consistent in spatial distribution and magnitude with those derived from MODIS. The CSPM derived from Sentinel 2 MSI B7 showed the highest consistency with MODIS on 15 August 2016, while the Sentinel 2 MSI B4 (λ = 665 nm) produced the highest consistency with MODIS on 2 April 2017. Overall, this study demonstrated the applicability of Sentinel 2 MSI for CSPM retrieval in Poyang Lake, and the Sentinel 2 MSI B4 and B7 are recommended for low and high loadings of SPM, respectively.

Most intensive human activities occur in lowlands. However, sporadic reports indicate that human activities are expanding in some Asian highlands. Here we investigate the expansions of human activities in highlands and their effects over Asia from 2000 to 2020 by combining earth observation data and socioeconomic data. We find that ∼23% of human activity expansions occur in Asian highlands and ∼76% of these expansions in highlands comes from ecological lands, reaching 95% in Southeast Asia. The expansions of human activities in highlands intensify habitat fragmentation and result in large ecological costs in low and lower-middle income countries, and they also support Asian developments. We estimate that cultivated land net growth in the Asian highlands contributed approximately 54% in preventing the net loss of the total cultivated land. Moreover, the growth of highland artificial surfaces may provide living and working spaces for ∼40 million people. Our findings suggest that highland developments hold dual effects and provide new insight for regional sustainable developments.

The size of phytoplankton not only influences its physiology, metabolic rates and marine food web, but also serves as an indicator of phytoplankton functional roles in ecological and biogeochemical processes. Therefore, some algorithms have been developed to infer the synoptic distribution of phytoplankton cell size, denoted as phytoplankton size classes (PSCs), in surface ocean waters, by the means of remotely sensed variables. This study, using the NASA bio-Optical Marine Algorithm Data set (NOMAD) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) database, and satellite match-ups, aimed to compare the effectiveness of modeling techniques, including partial least square (PLS), artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forests (RF), and feature selection techniques, including genetic algorithm (GA), successive projection algorithm (SPA) and recursive feature elimination based on support vector machine (SVM-RFE), for inferring PSCs from remote sensing data. Results showed that: (1) SVM-RFE worked better in selecting sensitive features; (2) RF performed better than PLS, ANN and SVM in calibrating PSCs retrieval models; (3) machine learning techniques produced better performance than the chlorophyll-a based three-component method; (4) sea surface temperature, wind stress, and spectral curvature derived from the remote sensing reflectance at 490, 510, and 555 nm were among the most sensitive features to PSCs; and (5) the combination of SVM-RFE feature selection techniques and random forests regression was recommended for inferring PSCs. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of machine learning techniques in selecting sensitive features and calibrating models for PSCs estimations with remote sensing.

Extreme precipitation events have caused severe societal, economic and environmental impacts through the disasters of floods, flash-floods and landslides. However, the coarse-resolution of satellite-derived precipitation data makes it difficult to quantitatively capture certain fine-scale heavy rainfall process. Therefore, to improve the spatial resolution and accuracy of satellite-based precipitation extremes, a downscaling-calibration scheme based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost_DC) was proposed in this study, where the XGBoost algorithm was applied in both downscaling and calibration procedures. The performance of XGBoost_DC was evaluated with other two comparative methods, in which XGBoost was only used in either downscaling (XGBoost_Spline) or calibration (Spline_XGBoost) process. The results showed that: (i) XGBoost_DC achieved the best performance, as it obtained the highest accuracy and well reproduced the occurrence and the spatial distribution of precipitation during typhoon events. (ii) XGBoost_DC could capture the spatial variations of the precipitation. Although Spline_XGBoost obtained results only slightly worse than the XGBoost_DC, it significantly underestimated the spatial variability. (iii) the model assessment between the XGBoost_DC and Spline_XGBoost illustrated the essential contribution of XGBoost algorithm in downscaling process, and improved our understanding of the capability of machine learning algorithm in reproducing spatial variance of precipitation. These findings imply that our proposed downscaling-calibration scheme can be applied for generating high-resolution and high-quality precipitation extremes during typhoon events, which would benefit the water and flood management, as well as other various applications in hydrological and meteorological modelling.

The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China is one of the major bay areas in the world. However, the spatiotemporal characteristics and rationalities of urban expansions within this region over a relatively long period of time are not well-understood. This study explored the spatiotemporal evolution of 11 cities within the GBA in 1987–2017 by integrating remote sensing, landscape analysis, and geographic information system (GIS) techniques, and further evaluated the rationalities of their expansion using the urban area population elastic coefficient (UPEC) and the urban area gross domestic product (GDP) elastic coefficient (UGEC). The results showed the following: (1) Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai experienced unprecedented urbanization compared with the other cities, and from 1987 to 2017, their urban areas expanded by 10.12, 11.48, 14.21, 24.90, 37.07, and 30.15 times, respectively; (2) several expansion patterns were observed in the 11 cities, including a mononuclear polygon radiation pattern (Guangzhou and Foshan), a double-nucleated polygon pattern (Macau and Zhongshan), and a multi-nuclear urbanization pattern (Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Jiangmen, Huizhou, Zhaoqing, and Zhuhai); (3) with regard to the proportion of area, the edge-expansion and outlying growth types were the predominant types for all 11 cities, and the infilling growth type was the one of the important types during 2007–2017 for Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Foshan; (4) the expansion of most cities took on an urban-to-rural landscape gradient, especially for Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, and Zhuhai; and (5) the rationalities of expansion in several time periods were rational for Guangzhou (1997–2007), Hong Kong (2007–2017), Foshan (1987–2007), Huizhou (1987–1997), and Dongguan (1997–2007), and the rationalities of expansion in the other cities and time periods were found to be irrational. These findings may help policy- and decision-makers to maintain the sustainable development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area.

Accurate high-spatial-resolution precipitation is significantly important in hydrological and meteorological modelling, especially in rain-gauge-sparse areas. Some methods and strategies have been applied for satellite-based precipitation downscaling, residual correction and precipitation calibration. However, which downscaling scheme can provide reliable high-resolution precipitation efficiently remains unanswered. To address this issue, this study aimed to present a framework combining the machine learning downscaling algorithm and post-process procedures. Firstly, four ML-based models, namely support vector regression, random forest, spatial random forest (SRF) and eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were tested for downscaling and compared with conventional downscaling methods. Then, the effectiveness of the residual correction process using ordinary Kriging and the calibration process using the geographical difference analysis (GDA) method was investigated. The results showed that the ML-based methods had better performance than the conventional regression and interpolation approaches. The SRF and XGBoost outperformed others in generating accurate precipitation estimation with a high resolution. The GDA calibration process significantly improved the downscaled results. However, the residual correction process decreased the downscaling performance of the ML-based models. Combining the SRF or XGBoost downscaling algorithm with the GDA calibration method could be a promising downscaling scheme for precipitation data. The scheme could be used to generate high-resolution precipitation, especially in areas urgently requiring data, which would benefit regional water resource management and hydrological disaster prevention.
