Image segmentation is a crucial task in computer vision, which divides a digital image into multiple segments and objects. In agriculture, image segmentation is extensively used for crop and soil monitoring, predicting the best times to sow, fertilize, and harvest, estimating crop yield, and detecting plant diseases. However, image segmentation faces difficulties in agriculture, such as the challenges of disease staging recognition, labeling inconsistency, and changes in plant morphology with the environment. Consequently, we have conducted a comprehensive review of image segmentation techniques based on deep learning, exploring the development and prospects of image segmentation in agriculture. Deep learning-based image segmentation solutions widely used in agriculture are categorized into eight main groups: encoder-decoder structures, multi-scale and pyramid-based methods, dilated convolutional networks, visual attention models, generative adversarial networks, graph neural networks, instance segmentation networks, and transformer-based models. In addition, the applications of image segmentation methods in agriculture are presented, such as plant disease detection, weed identification, crop growth monitoring, crop yield estimation, and counting. Furthermore, a collection of publicly available plant image segmentation datasets has been reviewed, and the evaluation and comparison of performance for image segmentation algorithms have been conducted on benchmark datasets. Finally, there is a discussion of the challenges and future prospects of image segmentation in agriculture.

In recent years, significant advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology and hyperspectral remote sensing have spurred rapid and innovative developments in UAV-based HyperSpectral Image (HSI) classification across a range of fields, including environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, forest health assessment, and disaster management. Compared to spaceborne platforms, the spectra of ground objects observed by UAV platforms exhibit notable variations, presenting more pronounced challenges for accurate classification. This paper provides an in-depth and systematic review of UAV HSI classification techniques, systematically examining the evolution from traditional machine learning approaches, such as sparse coding, compressed sensing, and kernel methods, to cutting-edge deep learning frameworks, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Transformer models, Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), and hybrid models. Although traditional methods demonstrate effectiveness in certain scenarios, their limitations become increasingly apparent when dealing with high-dimensional, nonlinear spectral data. In contrast, deep learning-based models excel at capturing intricate relationships between spectral and spatial features, significantly boosting classification accuracy and emerging as the dominant paradigm in the field. And the WHU-Hi hyperspectral remote sensing dataset are utilized as a case study to elucidate the advantages and limitations of various deep learning methods through rigorous qualitative and quantitative comparisons. The potential of UAV hyperspectral image classification techniques in addressing high-dimensional data and complex scenarios is also thoroughly described. Furthermore, this paper delves into cutting-edge research trends, such as lightweight model development, hyperspectral large models, multi-source data fusion, and model interpretability, while also highlighting future trends for UAV hyperspectral remote sensing classification technology, particularly in real-time monitoring and intelligent applications.

In the field of remote sensing image applications, RGB and infrared image object detection is an important technology. The object detection performance can be improved and the robustness of the algorithm will be enhanced by making full use of their complementary information. Existing RGB-infrared detection methods do not explicitly encourage RGB and infrared images to achieve effective multimodal learning. We find that when fusing RGB and infrared images, cross-modal redundant information weakens the degree of complementary information fusion. Inspired by this observation, we propose a redundant information suppression network (RISNet) which suppresses cross-modal redundant information and facilitates the fusion of RGB-Infrared complementary information. Specifically, we design a novel mutual information minimization module to reduce the redundancy between RGB appearance features and infrared radiation features, which enables the network to take full advantage of the complementary advantages of multimodality and improve the object detection performance. In addition, in view of the drawbacks of the current artificial classification of lighting conditions, such as the subjectivity of artificial classification and the lack of comprehensiveness (divided into day and night only), we propose a method based on histogram statistics to classify lighting conditions in more detail. Experimental results on two public RGB-infrared object detection datasets demonstrate the superiorities of our proposed method over the state-of-the-art approaches, especially under challenging conditions such as poor illumination, complex background, and low contrast.

Remote sensing object detection based on the combination of infrared and visible images can effectively adapt to the around-the-clock and changeable illumination conditions. However, most of the existing infrared and visible object detection networks need two backbone networks to extract the features of two modalities, respectively. Compared with the single modality detection network, this greatly increases the amount of calculation, which limits its real-time processing on the vehicle and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms. Therefore, this paper proposes a local adaptive illumination-driven input-level fusion module (LAIIFusion). The previous methods for illumination perception only focus on the global illumination, ignoring the local differences. In this regard, we design a new illumination perception submodule, and newly define the value of illumination. With more accurate area selection and label design, the module can more effectively perceive the scene illumination condition. In addition, aiming at the problem of incomplete alignment between infrared and visible images, a submodule is designed for the rapid estimation of slight shifts. The experimental results show that the single modality detection algorithm based on LAIIFusion can ensure a large improvement in accuracy with a small loss of speed. On the DroneVehicle dataset, our module combined with YOLOv5L could achieve the best performance.

In real-world scenarios, the information quality provided by RGB and thermal (RGB-T) sensors often varies across samples. This variation will negatively impact the performance of semantic segmentation models in utilizing complementary information from RGB-T modalities, resulting in a decrease in accuracy and fusion credibility. Dynamically estimating the uncertainty of each modality for different samples could help the model perceive such information quality variation and then provide guidance for a reliable fusion. With this in mind, we propose a novel uncertainty-guided trustworthy fusion network (UTFNet) for RGB-T semantic segmentation. Specifically, we design an uncertainty estimation and evidential fusion (UEEF) module to quantify the uncertainty of each modality and then utilize the uncertainty to guide the information fusion. In the UEEF module, we introduce the Dirichlet distribution to model the distribution of the predicted probabilities, parameterized with evidence from each modality and then integrate them with the Dempster-Shafer theory (DST). Moreover, illumination evidence gathering (IEG) and multi-scale evidence gathering (MEG) modules by considering illumination and target multi-scale information respectively are designed to gather more reliable evidence. In the IEG module, we calculate the illumination probability and model it as the illumination evidence. The MEG module can collect evidence for each modality across multiple scales. Both qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model in accuracy, robustness and trustworthiness. The code will be accessible at https://github.com/KustTeamWQW/UTFNet.
