Shih-Hwa Chiou is director of the Department of Medical Research, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, and a jointly employed professor at the Department of Pharmacy, National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University. He obtained an MD from the School of Medicine, National Defense Medical College (1994). He was a resident doctor at the Department of Ophthalmology, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan (1994-1999). Since 2000, he has been an attending physician at the Department of Ophthalmology, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. In 2002, he received a Ph.D. from the Institute of Clinical Medicine, National Yang-Ming University, and joined the City of Hope Hospital Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplant Center, USA, as a postdoc fellow. In 2007, he visited the Scripps Research Institute, USA, as a visiting scientist. During his career, he has received several honors, including the Outstanding Research Achievement Award from the Taiwan Pharmacology Research Association, Taiwan (2012); the 2nd Investigator Innovation Award from the Taiwan Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2013); the 9th Lee-Tien Der Foundation Young Investigator Award, Taiwan (2014); and the Outstanding Research Award of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan (2014). His research interests are cellular reprogramming and cancer stem cells.
