In this work, the study of the fractional behavior of the Bateman–Feshbach–Tikochinsky and Caldirola–Kanai oscillators by using different fractional derivatives is presented. We obtained the Euler–Lagrange and the Hamiltonian formalisms in order to represent the dynamic models based on the Liouville–Caputo, Caputo–Fabrizio–Caputo and the new fractional derivative based on the Mittag–Leffler kernel with arbitrary order α. Simulation results are presented in order to show the fractional behavior of the oscillators, and the classical behavior is recovered when α is equal to 1.

A scanning system for specific absorption rate of ferrofluids with superparamagnetic nanoparticles is presented in this study. The system contains an induction heating device designed and built with a resonant inverter in order to generate magnetic field amplitudes up to 38 mT, over the frequency band 180-525 kHz. Its resonant circuit involves a variable capacitor with 1 nF of capacitance steps to easily select the desired frequency, reaching from 0.3 kHz/nF up to 5 kHz/nF of resolution. The device performance is characterized in order to compare with the theoretical predictions of frequency and amplitude, showing a good agreement with the resonant inverters theory. Additionally, the setup is tested using a synthetic iron oxide with 10 ± 1 nm diameter suspended in liquid glycerol, with concentrations at 1%. Meanwhile, the temperature rise is measured to determine the specific absorption rate and calculate the dissipated power density for each f. This device is a suitable alternative to studying ferrofluids and analyzes the dependence of the power absorption density with the magnetic field intensity and frequency.

Computational approaches have been used for analyzing risk factors together with conventional mammograms for breast cancer detection. Currently, other screening methods like electro-impedance mammography are available. Notwithstanding, as far as we know there is not related work evaluating the role of electrical-conductivity index of the mammary gland as a quantitative factor for early detection of breast cancer. This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of including breast conductivity index as a quantitative local risk-factor by analyzing a dataset of Mexican patients from a machine learning perspective. There are 12 attributes distributed into two groups: electrical-conductivity (3) and medical records (9). According to the obtained results with unsupervised methods, the performance in terms of accuracy of using only electrical-conductivity (43%) is better than using all available features (38%) and the medical records (33%). On the other hand, we identified that SVM achieves higher results in comparison with other algorithms when only the electrical-features are used. The obtained results demonstrate the important role of conductivity index as a quantitative local risk-factor for being considered in screening processes. Besides, it emerges as an important aspect to be included in the development of automatic tools for experts to perform breast cancer diagnosis.

Plaques formed by abnormal accumulation of amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) lead to onset of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Pharmacological treatments do not reduce Aβ aggregation neither restore learning and memory. Noninvasive techniques have emerged as an alternative to treat AD, such as stimulation with electromagnetic fields (EMF) that decrease Aβ deposition and reverses cognitive impairment in AD mice, even though some studies showed side effects on parallel magnetic fields stimulation. As a new approach of magnetic field (MF) stimulation, vortex magnetic fields (VMF) have been tested inducing a random movement of charged biomolecules in cells, promoting cell viability and apparently safer than parallel magnetic fields. In this study we demonstrate the effect of VMF on Aβ aggregation. The experimental strategy includes, i) design and construction of a coil capable to induce VMF, ii) evaluation of VMF stimulation on Aβ peptide induced-fibrils-formation, iii) evaluation of VMF stimulation on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line in the presence of Aβ peptide. We demonstrated for the first time that Aβ aggregation exposed to VMF during 24 h decreased ~ 86% of Aβ fibril formation compared to control. Likewise, VMF stimulation reduced Aβ fibrils-cytotoxicity and increase SH-SY5Y cell viability. These data establish the basis for future investigation that involve VMF as inhibitor of Aβ-pathology and indicate the therapeutic potential of VMF for AD treatment.

An exhaustive characterization of the physicochemical properties of gum arabic (GA)-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles was conducted in this work. These nanoparticles were obtained via the in-situ coprecipitation method (a fast single-step method) in two GA:Fe ratios, 10:1 and 20:1, respectively. Several experimental techniques were applied in the characterization process, all of them described below. Using Transmission Electron Microcopy images, they were shown to have spherical-like morphology with 11 nm diameter. The Fourier Transform Infrared spectra confirmed the attachment of the GA on the surface of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), providing good colloidal stability from pH 7 to 8. The thickness of the coatings (1.7 nm and 1.1 nm) was determined using thermogravimetric measurements. A high specific absorption rate and superparamagnetic properties were determined using alternant and static magnetic fields, respectively. The GA-coated MNPs were non-cytotoxic, according to tests on HT-29 human intestine cells. Additionally, HT-29 cells were exposed to magnetic fluid hyperthermia at 530 kHz, and the induction of cell death by the magnetic field, due to the heating of GA-coated MNP, was observed.
