When combined with high-speed photography technology, the digital image correlation (DIC) method provides an excellent photographic image processing capability that can be used to convert the evolving full-field surface properties of structures to sets of two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) coordinate values. In this study, the applicability of the DIC method and high-speed cameras in underground mining was investigated by measuring the displacement and vibration of rock pillars caused by blasting. This technique is used extensively in engineering and is increasingly being applied to new fields. As a result of comparing the DIC results for blast vibration with the measured values of the contact sensor through field tests, the maximum displacement and vibration speed were found to be 86% and 93% accurate, respectively. In addition, the obtained values appeared similar to those predicted through numerical analysis. Field test results indicate that both methods yielded similar results. Therefore, it is concluded that it is feasible to use the DIC and high-speed camera to measure ground displacements and vibrations from blasting in underground mining. In addition, the system conditions required for blast vibration measurement were considered by comparing the accuracy with the existing measurement methods.

A three-dimensional combined finite-discrete element element method (FDEM), parallelized by a general-purpose graphic-processing-unit (GPGPU), was applied to identify the fracture process of rough concrete–rock joints under direct shearing. The development process of shear resistance under the complex interaction between the rough concrete–rock joint surfaces, i.e., asperity dilatation, sliding, and degradation, was numerically simulated in terms of various asperity roughness under constant normal confinement. It was found that joint roughness significantly affects the development of overall joint shear resistance. The main mechanism for the joint shear resistance was identified as asperity sliding in the case of smoother joint roughness and asperity degradation in the case of rougher joint asperity. Moreover, it was established that the bulk internal friction angle increased with asperity angle increments in the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, and these results follow Patton’s theoretical model. Finally, the friction coefficient in FDEM appears to be an important parameter for simulating the direct shear test because the friction coefficient affects the bulk shear strength as well as the bulk internal friction angle. In addition, the friction coefficient of the rock–concrete joints contributes to the variation of the internal friction angle at the smooth joint than the rough joint.

By increasing the effectiveness of the energy generated by the explosive charge inserted into a blast hole, stemming increases rock fragmentation. Missing or improper stemming, which can lead to the detonation gas escaping from the blast hole in advance, results not only in the waste of explosive energy and poor fragmentation but also in environmental problems, such as ground vibration, noise, flying rocks, back breaks, and air blasts. In this study, a stemming material based on a shear thickening fluid (STF) that reacts to dynamic pressure was developed. Two blasting experiments were conducted to verify the performance of the STF-based stemming material. In the first experiment, the pressure inside the blast hole was directly measured based on the application of the stemming material. In the second experiment, full-scale bench blasting was performed, and the blasting results of sand stemming and the STF-based stemming cases were compared. The measurement results of the pressure in the blast hole showed that when the STF-based stemming material was applied, the pressure at the top of the blast hole was lower than in the sand stemming case, and the stemming ejection was also lower. Full-scale bench blasting was conducted to compare the two types of stemming materials by evaluating the size of the rock fragments using image processing. The results of the two blasting experiments helped to verify that the blockage performance of the STF-based stemming material in the blast hole was superior to that of the sand stemming material.

The Trauzl test is widely used to measure the explosive power of a substance by determining the volume increase produced by the detonation of a tested explosive charge in the cavity of a lead block with defined quality and size. In this study, the Trauzl lead block test and a high-speed 3D digital image correlation (3D-DIC) system were used to evaluate the effect of stemming on a blast hole. The blasting experiments were conducted with emulsion explosives. The stemming materials adopted in this study were sand, aggregate, and shear thickening fluid (STF)-based stemming materials. The results of the blasting experiments and numerical analysis showed that the expansion rate of the lead block was most affected by STF-based materials, followed by aggregates and sand stemming. Furthermore, the displacement and surface strain on the block were the highest in the experimental case using STF-based stemming materials. The STF-based stemming material developed in this study in open pit mining or various blasting constructions is expected to increase rock fragment efficiency, compared to that of general blasting stemming methods, and reduce blasting vibration by decreasing the amount of explosive per blast hole used for blasting.

Stemming has a major impact on energy containment inside a blasting hole and is essential for increasing the efficacy of explosive charges in rock blasting. This method is essential in many fields, including road project development, mining, tunneling, and underground construction. By fortifying the confinement of the energy generated by a loaded explosive charge in a blasting hole, stemming increases the fragmentation of rock. Improper or missing stemming leads to the gas escaping in advance from blast holes, resulting not only in the wastage of explosive energy and poor fragmentation but also in environmental problems such as ground vibration, noise, flying rocks, back breaks, and air blasts. When the process to keep gases inside blast holes is not performed correctly or is skipped, it can waste explosive energy and produce poorly fragmented rocks. This also causes problems like high ground vibrations, loud noise, flying rocks, cracks behind the blast area, and strong air shocks. In this study, a shock chamber blasting experiment and numerical analysis were conducted to evaluate the pressure confinement effect of stemming material and plug devices in a blast hole. The resulting stemming effect was compared with that of a shear-thickening fluid (STF)-based stemming material currently under development and sand, which is a commonly used blast stemming material. To evaluate the enhancement of the confinement effect inside the pressurized blast hole, three types of stemming plugs were adopted. The blasting experiment and numerical simulation results revealed that the STF-based stemming materials were superior to conventional stemming materials. In addition, the STF-based stemming and plug system can prevent detonation gas from prematurely overflowing the borehole and effectively prolong the action time and scope of the detonation gas in the borehole.

In this study, a small scale experiment of an earth retaining wall was conducted to develop a real-time and full-field noncontact measurement system for earth retaining walls in urban areas. The collapse behavior of the structure was reproduced using a model of an earth retaining wall, and the deformation and displacement of the entire surface of the small scale structure were measured using a 3D image-based digital-image correlation method employing a stereo camera system. The measured displacement was compared with the actual displacement by using high-precision hexapod equipment in the experiment, and the results confirmed a high level of precision.
