He studied chemistry at the University of Basel with a minor in geology, and obtained a Diploma in Chemistry in 1995. Since then, Bernhard has been working in the field of single crystal analysis. He received his doctoral degree in 1998 (summa cum laude) at the same institution, working under the supervision of Jürgen F.K. Müller in the field of asymmetric organic chemistry. For two years, he was a postdoctoral fellow at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, in the group of Stephen J. Lippard, where he worked on the interaction of oxaliplatin with DNA. Bernhard Spingler has done a habilitation at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. He has been appointed as a Privatdozent for bioinorganic chemistry in 2009 and as a Titularprofessor in 2016. He was the recipient of several Swiss fellowships.
